Vehicle Detail
For sale is a RARE 1969 Chevrolet Corvair Convertible with 39,035 original miles. This car is in very good condition and had been stored for many years before my father bought the car in the late 1980’s. Since then, it has not been driven very much and has always been garaged. It is in very good shape, not having any body work since my family has owned it. The paint does have a few nicks and chips. At one time someone had put side molding on it before my father bought the car and the glue/shadow of it can still be seen, but overall the paint is in good shape for a 41 year old car. The brakes were re-done about 5 years ago (about 200 miles ago) along with a small rebuild of the engine. It does leak a few drops of oil after it has been run. The tires are in good shape with a lot of tread. The interior is in good shape although someone had replaced the original vinyl seats with a green velour. Not OE but it does make it less hot to sit on in the sun. There is occasional noise in the front that I think is shock related, not sure. This car is #5825 which makes it number 175 from the end of production, of which only 521 convertibles were made in 1969. In a letter to my father in November of 1995, Mark Ellis, who along with Dave Newell wrote the book “1969 Corvair Finger Tip Facts”, he said that this car went down the line at Willow Run either Tuesday May 13 or Wednesday May 14 (the last day of production). As of 11/95, Mr Ellis had 3 convertibles listed in his book that were produced after this one. It’s anybody’s guess if there are anymore convertibles surviving after this one. Overall this car is not in show room condition, but with a little work it could be a show room car. The car is in good condition and could be enjoyed by a Corvair enthusiast as is. I am selling this car because I would like to see it go to someone that can put the work into making it a show room car so a piece of Corvair history is preserved. On Jun-10-10 at 13:05:37 PDT, seller added the following information: My father told me he bought the car from a University of Michigan Law School student who had inherited the car from his grandfather. The grandfather had owned a car dealership and bought this car new. As far as we know this car has only been owned by 2 families. The convertible top and boot cover are in good condition with no tears. The slight oil leak appears to be from the oil pan gasket. This is a VERY RARE Corvair and with a just little time and work will be a show room car. On Jun-15-10 at 06:52:19 PDT, seller added the following information: We have had a number of inquiries over the past couple days on whether or not this car could be driven across country or if it has ever been in an accident. As far as we know the car has never been in an accident. We've never driven the car for long distances, we've only driven it locally and in parades. We sold our other Corvair last year and the buyer towed the car successfully on a U-Haul Car Tow Dolly from Michigan to Texas. I would recommend towing the car at a minimum if the buyer lives a long distance from Michigan, The rental for a car tow dolly is relatively inexpensive compared to other towing or car hauling methods.
