Vehicle Detail

For Sale is a classic 1977 BMW 530i. This is the first run of the BMW 5-series. The E12 platform was introduced to the public in 1972, and with the introduction of the E23 platform (7-series) in 1977, the E12s got a bit of a re-style. In 1977, this was BMW's luxury executive sedan, until they came out with the 7-series and the 5-series became more of a sport-tourer. The car rides like a cloud, but can still corner very responsively. This BMW has the 3.0L M30 "bix six," an engine platform that BMW used from 1968 to 1994, not a bad run. These engines have been known to run for 300,000 miles without failure. This 530i has the Bosch L-jettronic fuel-injected M30 mated to a 4-speed manual, which produced 176 bhp from the factory in 1977. Both the engine and transmission are in strong working order and I can attest to have "chirped" the tires in gears 1 thru 3. The body is in good condition for a 33 year-old car. There are a couple of small dings, the most significant of which is on the roof, but no major damage. I have found no body rot on the car. There are a few small bubbles of surface rust, but no rot. It has its original paint, in fair condition, with a few chips and some fading. The interior is in fair condition. It is the original blue vinyl. The seats are mostly good with the exception of the driver's seat, which has a tear in the left side. The dash has some cracks and at some point, someone broke one of the plastic fan covers under the dash. Someone previous to my ownership removed the radio and all of the speakers. Please keep in mind that this is a 33 year old car, and while it is mechanically sound and very drivable (I just made a 1200 mile trip in it), it does have flaws. The passenger power window and sunroof do not operate. I do not know if these are motor related or switch related. The rear passenger window operates, but very slowly. The speedometer and odometer do not work, so exact mileage is unknown. These did not work when I purchased the car, but I was told that mileage was around 50,000 (a fact I find hard to believe). Nor does the fuel gauge function, however the low fuel light does work and will come on just before the car runs out of fuel. The tachometer works well. The temperature gauge works, but because of an aftermarket sensor, it reads a little hotter than the actual temp. Despite this, it does show operating temperature with normal limits and the car has been tested with an infrared thermometer on a number of occasions to test this fact. The car will likely be a stylish form of reliable transportation for years to come and would make an excellent candidate for restoration for an E12 enthusiast. Good Luck and Happy Bidding!
