1974 DAF 66 YA: Dutch Jeep/Volvo/ Renault motor and transmission, Very Rare VIN: 66YAY010734 Miles: 79,210 The History of the DAF: The DAF (vanDoorne’s Automobile Fabriek) has a long history. The company started producing truck trailers in Einhoven, The Netherlands in the early 1930's with the brothers Hub and Wim vanDoorne. The company soon progressed to the next stage and began producing the trucks to pull those trailers around 1949. In 1972 DAF stopped production of the Type 44 and 55 and introduced the DAF type 66 equipt with 1100 cc & 1300 cc water cooled motors coupled with the Automatic/Variomatic transmission. The more powerful and totally redesigned DAF was a big hit with the public. Production and sales figures were astounding; approximately 138,840 units were built and sold between 1972 and 1975. The DAF 66 was designed with the idea of returning to the United States market and it encompassed all the safety features required for importation. Unfortunately, the 1973 “Gas Wars” put an end to that plan and they never reached our shores. This DAF: Specifically built by the Dutch DAF factory for the Dutch Air Force United Nations service, the car is based on the DAF 66 renamed the Volvo 6 after Volvo bought the DAF automobile factories. Uses the DAF variautomatic transmission. Has a Renault 1100 engine, also used in the Renault 5 (known in the US as the LeCar). This car is one of the only two known in the United States. The car runs and seems to be complete. Mechanical parts are simple. Be welcome at the Volvo meet and the French Car Club as well as he Spring Daffodil festival.
