I ordered this vehicle through my dad who was a GM employee. He drove the vehicle as part of the GM PEP program and when the waiting period was over the title was transferred to me. The car is mostly original. There have been no major modifications, holes drilled or other irreversible damage. There were some powertain modifications made. Around 53,000 miles I had a worn valve guide in the right hand head. I removed the heads, had new valves and guides installed. During that time I added a Competition Cams CS-260H-12 (.445” lift), Roller tipped rockers, pushrods and Rhoads lifters and re-jetted the carb. This style of lifter is a little noisy (sounds mechanical) at idle but was used to keep a high vacuum to pass the emissions test. All the emissions equipment and electronic control modules are still in place and functional. I removed the original three speed auto trans and replaced it with a Buick Grand National GNX TH200-4R and added an external trans cooler. At the same time I rebuilt the rear axle posi unit and changed the gear ratio to 3.08 (was 2.67?) . This really improved the drivability. Looking at some old records I was surprised to see I was getting a little over 21 mpg on the highway. I added a rear stabilizer and rebuilt rear upper and lower trailing control arms with the factory bushings The wheels and tires are from a 1985 Monte Carlo SS. I have the original 14” wheels, center caps and lugs. The 14” wheels will probably need restoration. I used them on another vehicle. Around 73,000 miles I added an aluminum clad Monte Carlo SS exhaust system exhaust system with some custom pipe fabrication for the longer wheel base. I used all factory hangers. Everything is functional and in working order including the Air Conditioning system. The body and trim are all in excellent condition. It has never been in an accident. There is no rust or pitted chrome. I am pretty sure it even has the original windshield in it. I had the car rust proofed when it was new. The car was driven during the winter (Dec 84 – Mar 85). After that the car was stored during the winter and garaged in the summer. It has not been driven much in the last 10 years and not licensed in the last 3 years. The car was repainted in its original color around 1991. It was repainted because the hood and roof were getting a milky haze (poor GM paint process). Unfortunately, it was common in those days. There was really no other way to fix it. Today, the paint is in overall excellent condition. There are some stone chips here and there but mostly on the front fascia above the grille, a small ding on the RF fender top and one on the rear tail gate near the license plate. Both could be worked out by one of those paintless dent pro’s. You can see some of the nearly 100 close up pictures in the photobucket link. The vehicle was never used to haul anything. The bed is in excellent condition (has original paint still). No dents but af few small paint scratches. It does have a Class 3 hitch on it but was used only on occasion to pull a small utility trailer. The interior is completely original. No damage to dash, seats, carpet, steering wheel etc. Non-smoker. Since I had not ever planned on selling the car I have acquired many spare parts. Most are OEM parts for things I thought might need replacing someday (weather stripping, brake hardware etc). I have a large folder with much of the original documentation, service records etc. I also have the Service Manual. In summary, this is a very nicely preserved and well cared for El Camino.
