Vehicle Detail

1965 MASERATI MISTRAL 3500 HATCHBACK COUPE #308, AUTOMATIC, LEFT HAND DRIVE, AUBERGINE EXTERIOR, LIGHT GRAY INTERIOR, 20,255 MILEAGE, 6 CYL TWIN CAM, HEMI, INJECTED, 3.5 LITER, 12-PLUG DUAL IGNITION, PROJECT CAR NEAR COMPLETION--STORED FOR 34 YEARS HISTORY: My friend purchased this Mistral in 1986. The car had been stored in a warehouse for 10 years, was covered in dust, had a cracked windshield and four flat tires. After pumping up the tires, he got the car running and drove it home, unfortunately he did not check the transmission fluid level, which later required replacement of the transmission. That was the last time this car was driven on public streets. He than began restoring the car. The car was disassembled, paint stripped, interior and doors gutted, and exterior epoxy primed and painted aubergine. In 2002 I purchased the car and continued the restoration. Items of restoration to date: Seats upholstered in light gray leather Interior dyed to match seats Chrome--rechromed or polished as required R & R Engine--new head gasket, head checked for cracks, freshened-up valves, new rings, honed cylinders Detailed engine compartment New factory automatic transmission Borrani wire wheels restored by Dayton Wire Wheels, new stainless steel spokes New radial tires & tubes Rotors turned New wheel cylinders Rebuilt starter New windshield The car's odometer reads 20,255, but I can not verify this as I am the third owner. But the original spare tire, pedal pads, and carpet show minimal wear and look correct for a car with this mileage. OVERALL CONDITION: This car has been stored for the last 34 years. There are no signs of the car ever being in an accident. The paint is 10 years old and still looks nice, though there are some thin spots due to over buffing. The aluminum body has a couple small dings on front left fender and a dent on the hood, which occured during storage. The car has the original AM-FM radio and complete factory tool kit. The tachometer cable is broken. It may need a master cylinder kit in the future. Still has the original exhaust. The car starts well and sounds great. A box of small parts has gone missing which included the following parts: two small trim pieces, dome light fixture, interior kick panel lights, passenger door window handle. Gremlins! Doors and hatchback seals should be replaced. Currently I am restoring a 1962 Ferrari Cabriolet and can't believe how crude the welds are in comparison to the Maserati. The Maserati has far more tooling and detailed workmanship, for example, its curved side windows. I believe the Mistral was the first production "hatchback." Only 11 Mistrals with automatic transmission were built in 1965. All receipts, factory manual, Lucas Fuel Injection manual and related car literature will be included. The car is being sold as a project car. Potential investment over five years is terrific.
