Vehicle Detail

1949 Plymouth Woody Station Wagon General Description: You are bidding on a restorable genuine original 1949 Plymouth Woody Station Wagon which according to the Chrysler/Plymouth production archives, represents one of perhaps as many as only a couple of dozen still in existence of some 3,443 originally produced. I acquired this woody over a year ago from a So. Calif. collector, but with work on so many other projects I am not able to complete this restoration. (For your information I do own a low mileage original 1949 Plymouth woody and have restored a '50 Plymouth Woody and other '49 and '50 Plymouths. I am very familiar with these cars). Mechanics and Engine: The car is generally in good mechanical condition. Some restoration work has been done. It runs, drives, steers and stops very well. The brakes have been rebuilt. (so it may be transported with ease) The engine has good oil pressure maintaining 45 psi when warmed up to operating temp. The radiator and engine cooling system works well. There are no water leaks. The water pump is smooth and quiet. The thermostat keeps the engine at 160*-170* running temp. The engine electrics function satisfactorily with the ammeter showing normal charging. All the engine gauges perform satisfactorily. The steering is excellent with no unnecessary play and the steering wheel turns freely. The clutch, transmission and entire drive line work well without any unusual noises and gear shifting operates normally. The body wiring for lights, horn, etc need attention. The wiring is repairable in its present condition. The wiring from the gas gauge to the tank is not connected and needs to be repaired. Body Metal and Wood parts: The body sheet metal and paint is fair to good. There are a few small dents from its many years of service but in all no major needs. The interior floor has had repair where needed and is in solid condition. The rocker panels have some rust in the under-body area. Some of the structural wood is in good shape such as the B door pillars, the lower C door pillars and some of the other wood structural parts which can be restored or at least used for patterns. (please see pictures) Other structural wood parts such as the doors must be replaced since, as all too usual with old original woodies, the weather and age has taken its toll on much of the structural and all of the wood paneling material. (A reference note is appropriate here. An excellent source of the '49 - '50 vintage of Plymouth woodies replacement wood parts is the 'Kline Family Workshop' located in Manchester, PA. They are masters of woodwork and reproduce exact duplicate wood parts of original materials @ reasonable costs. Most of the metal parts, structural and mechanical for the doors, tailgate and liftgate are included as may be seen in the pictures, such as: Front door hinges and braces, vent window assemblies, door operating and window mechanical parts, latches, sriker- plates, stops, guides, hinges, springs, window cranks, inside door handles, etc. The rear door lower hinges and the lift gate holding arm hinge, the left side tailgate long scissor hinge part and the four outside door handles. (right side tailgate scissor hinge and both right and left long straight springs are included) With the exception of the windshield and vent windows glass is needed as well as weather striping, headliner and sun-visors. (all the headliner bows are included, see pics.) The tires are matching original style white walls. the tread on the tires is fair. Note: The original body tag is on the car, however the car is untitled. In Conclusion: Now, if you have desired a good restorable Woody and most particularly a 1949 Plymouth Woody at an entry level price, this may be the car for you. Sources for replacement parts are still readily available and affordable. Ask yourself what is the upside value of a purchase such as this? Restoration work is required but the rewards are excellent, either as a proud owner's woody or as an investment. Woody cars have continued to escalate especially over the last few years, even fair to good quality cars selling for upwards of $50,000 to $75,000 and top quality cars well over $100,000.
