Vehicle Detail

1993 VW Cabriolet with 123,850 mi. for sale. I bought this vehicle in October 2001 with 98,000 miles. The previous owner had made it a project car by adding a performance exhaust system, installing two engine compartment braces (one over the engine and a beefier one under the engine), upgraded the fuel injection computer, replaced all the shocks and engine vacuum lines, and replaced the front brakes and master brake cylinder with ones from a Jetta GLI and refurbished the rear drum brakes. The stereo system was replaced with an Alpine CD/AM/FM head unit, all cabin speakers were upgraded and a power amp with new subwoofer was added in the trunk. I've since mainained the vehicle with regular oil changes using Mobil 1 as did the previous owner. The brake fluid system and radiator have been professionally flushed along with a new radiator, a new clutch and clutch cable. The front brake rotors have been resurfaced and the front pads replaced. All the external drive belts have been replaced. I've added two new tires in 2004. Recently I replaced the air filter, spark plugs, all the high voltage wires and the rotor cap. The air conditioning system was converted to the new freon though it only blows out the front windshield vents. Still it's cold air so it helps on the very hot days. The seat heaters have never functioned but then I never drove this car during the winter. The transmission could be better: though all the gears do work getting into fifth gear will take some practice. Otherwise everything else works. I also added a padded center arm rest that can be adjusted and includes two cup holders that slide out when needed. The car is quick and handles well. When it's cold the idle does wander but it eventually settles down after a few minutes. The engine water temperature gauge sometimes works and other times plays dead, even after being replaced at great expense(!). Aparently this is a common problem with this model. However the trio of gauges below the ash tray work all the time, which includes an engine oil temperature gauge. Due to the upgraded fuel injection computer this car now requires premium gasoline. I contacted the vendor which did the upgrading shortly after I purchased the car and I received confirmation of this requirement. Now the bad: the roof is starting to tear (see photos). The previous owner had a cat that left its mark behind but the real issue is the two tears, especially the one on the driver's side. When I'm not using the car I keep it covered and the car does not yet leak. Vehicle received on 4/16/2010 a Maryland State vehicle inspection certificate valid for 90 days. I'm selling it now as I've been advised by my doctor to limit my exposure to the sun. Unfortunately driving a convertible doesn't mesh well with that advice. On Apr-17-10 at 16:31:12 PDT, seller added the following information: On 2/17/2010 this vehicle passed the State of Maryland annual emissions test. I have the issued certificate of this event. On Apr-18-10 at 09:44:54 PDT, seller added the following information: Photo of exhaust header system uploaded to show its condition. On Apr-18-10 at 15:37:13 PDT, seller added the following information: Today I changed the engine oil using as usual Mobil 1 10W-30 along with a new VW filter. Though less than 2,000 miles has passed since the last oil change sufficient time had passed to warrant an oil change. The odometer now shows 123,865. As a side note four wheel locks and a wheel lock key come with the alloy wheels. In the trunk is the standard short-range spare tire with very little wear along with the standard jack equipment. On Apr-19-10 at 07:36:48 PDT, seller added the following information: One quirk I fogot to disclose earlier is that when the front passenger door is closed the front passenger's window cannot traverse up the final inch of travel. This is due to a swelling in the B-pillar's rubber gasket near the roof line that impedes the window's path of travel. The 'solution' is crack open the door before attempting to raise the window completely and then shut it afterwards. The gasket still properly functions to seal the window from the elements but it would have to be replaced in order to resolve this issue of raising the passenger window completely while the passenger door is closed.
