Vehicle Detail

PRICE LOWERED AND RESERVE LOWERED DUE TO LOTS OF COMMENTS ABOUT THE REPLACED ENGINE. THE ENGINE MAY NOT BE ORIGINAL BUT THE CAR IS BEAUTIFUL AND THE ENGINE THAT IS IN IT RUNS WELL. THE PRICE IS NOW WHERE YOU COULD CHANGE OUT THE ENGINE FOR A JET THRUST , CLEAN UP THE BAY AND HAVE A NICE SHOW CAR AS WELL AS A NICE DRIVER. I purchased this beautiful Jet Thrust 1964 R1 GT Hawk in March, 2007 on Ebay with the intent of doing cosmetic clean-up, brightwork polish, and minor electrical and mechanical restore. Since then, the car has been garaged waiting for my knee replacement to permit me to move around the car freely. That hasn’t happened yet and my Dr. tells me I need the other knee replaced soon. So it seems as though my crawling around cars may be over, at least for quite a while, and so I am reluctantly putting the car for sale. Now, about the car: This beauty was assembled December 11, 1963, just 9 days before Studebaker ceased car production in South Bend. While production continued in Canada for two years after this, there were no more hawks built. Examination of the "Jet Thrust Roster" we know of only 7 surviving Jet Thrust Hawks that were built after this one. The 62-64 GT Hawk is one of only 5 Studebaker models recognized by the Milestone Car Society. The GT Hawk is in good company with such cars as the Corvette and Jaguar XKE. For a complete listing of all Milestone cars go to www.milestonecarsociety.org Production figure for the Hawk for the abbreviated 1964 year which ended Dec. 20, 1963 was a total of 1772 built. Of those, only 169 were R1 Jet Thrust equipped. The Studebaker build sheet shows the following for this car: SN-64V 18478 Moonlight Silver Metallic. (only one other known survivor of the 7 above is this color) Powershift transmission with floor shifter. Power front disc brakes Power steering Tinted glass Seat belts Climatizer R1 Jet Thrust engine. (The original R! engine has been replaced by a previous owner) The car was originally delivered in Riverside Calif. and has remained in Calif. except for the last three years. It remains a no-rust car, I’m not aware of any panel replacement or bondo, Areas prone to rust appear to be rust free. The car has undergone some restoration by a previous owner/s, notably the interior upholstery and carpet, trunk carpet treatment, and a beautiful original color body paint job. One can see by the pictures the degree to which these efforts have enhanced the car. Alas, the engine compartment has pretty much been overlooked, and will need attention by the new owner. The interior wood grain has had new reproduction panels installed, except for the two rear panels which are included in this auction. The paint shop, while doing a professional original color finish did get carried away and removed the body tag. They subsequently misplaced it so there is no body tag on the car. Also, in their zeal to do a complete paint job, they painted over the car’s factory attached Serial Number tag. I have since removed the paint covering the tag to reveal the proper serial number. The SN tag matches the title and the build sheet. Note also that the car has a beautifully installed black vinyl “Sport Roof”. This was a factory recognized dealer add on, and has been recently professionally installed. The radial tires are like new and are installed on slightly wider Chrysler rims that are intended for radials. The Powershift transmission properly starts in 2nd gear and shifts into 3rd smoothly. 1st gear works properly and only engages if pressed into service by starting with the shift lever in 1st, or by stomping the accelerator for a jack rabbit start. Power brakes and steering work like a modern car. The tach works properly. There is a heavy duty radiator and viscous drive fan. Engine temp. holds well. Oil pressure gage works and pressure holds when the car is warmed up. Since leaving Calif . approx. 3 years ago the car has been garaged and covered. The California Car Co. cover is included in this auction. Other general information is on Wikipedia, search “GT Hawk” Known issues: The engine replacing the original R1 is from a 1965 Cruiser built in Canada, it appears to be a Jet Thrust engine as it has the correct vibration damper, 4bbl carburetor and chrome valve covers and air cleaner. The car starts well when warmed up, slower if it has been sitting for a while, and smokes a little on startup. Appearance issues include some minor paint chipping, some chrome that will need to be re-done and some stainless that could stand some attention. All of these are only apparent on close inspection The black paint on the indents in the grill are worn and mostly gone, a NOS grill is included with the car and can easily be installed. Included in this auction: 1964 GT Hawk SN 64V18478 Woodgrain panels for rear seat side panels. California car cover Clear Minnesota Title NOS grill
