Vehicle Detail
When I was still a teenager in 1966 my father bought a red 1966 Olds Toronado. They were the talk of the auto world at that time. I was with my dad when he test drove the Toronado. We drove to the Olds Dealership in his 1962 Mercury pillarless four door. We were just going to test drive the Toro as he had heard so much about it. As we drove down the driveway with the salesman in the back seat dad turned right and we headed uphill from the Dealership and as I felt the car pull us up the hill and watched my dad’s face, I guessed we were going home in one. He let me drive it after his test drive and I was thrilled. We did go home in one that day and every once in a while he would let me drive with him along and every time it was a thrill for me. I bought this Olds Toronado about six years ago with 26,788 original miles. When it arrived on the truck I could hardly wait for the driver to off load the Toro. He backed it down off the truck and parked it while we did the paperwork. After the trucker left I walked over to the car, opened the door and sat down. The car looked so good as I had walked around it as it was still on the truck, I hoped that it ran nearly as well. I put the key in the ignition and started engine and all at once the memories hit and I was 17 again starting my dads new Olds Toronado. I put the gear shift in drive which is between "D" and "N" just like my dads was after a couple years. I stepped on the gas and knew the odometer was correct. The old man that sold me the car hadn't stretched the truth at all. As the trans finished shifting it was already doing 50 on the narrow, back road leading to my house. I kept it at 50 eventhough the speed limit is 35 on that narrow, curving, uphill road and I let the Toro pull me all the way to the top. Every time I get in and start the car I get the same thrill. However, I own too many old cars and I don't drive any of them enough and am selling all. In almost six years I have only been thrilled in this about 2,000 miles worth as the mileage is now original 28,500. I hope I did it justice with the photos. From 5 feet the paint looks great but has some checking on the top. There are many little chips all over that the previous owner had touched up and I have continued to do to avoid surface rust. There are many road chips on the bottom between the rear wheel opening and the back bumper with some surface rust. It isn't bubbling through like salt damage. The previous owner told me he bought the car from his brother when it was a year old and has always garaged it. In 1982 he put it in storage for over twenty years - professionally stored (all fluids drained, wheels off with car on jacks) in the warehouse of his brother in law. In late 2004 he had a complete check out of the car after getting it out of storage and anything that was needed was repaired. The only thing the owner couldn't explain to me was the front bumper being bent a bit. I never got around to getting it straightened. The previous owner was 85 when I bought the car and he told me he always parked it in his garage. I believe he must have rubbed the right side door edge on the wooden garage opening because almost all the paint is rubbed to the undercoat and there are no dents or scrapped metal, just paint rub. That missing paint area had been covered with touch up paint when I bought the car. I have shown the details with photos. The car is almost as new. The glass shows no age, the chrome is good inside and out, the upholstery shows as new except for small cracks in the bottom part of the drivers seat and the original rubber factory mat on the drivers side floor has dried a bit. This is one of my garaged cars and I have noticed it leaking a bit of power steering fluid lately. There is also an auxiliary fuel pump installed between the gas tank and the engine compartment. The engine compartment has never been cleaned or painted it is as original. I did get the surface dust off for the photos. The air has been converted to R-134 and works well. The car is equipped with Air Conditioning, Power Steering, Brakes, Windows, Seats and Antenna and all work well, There is also a rear window Defroster and Tinted Glass. Within the past year I had the power brake booster/master cylinder replaced and will ship the old one with the car.
