Vehicle Detail

Regrettably I need to sell my 1979 BMW R100S, a rare and collectible BMW airhead. This is a true factory produced R100S. I'm selling because I need the space for my ongoing BMW R90S restorations (Instagram: R90Sdoc). Comes with left and right Krauser hard bags in good condition (not shown), and importantly, with keys to the bags. Also comes with a few small spare parts and the original Owners Manual. Comes with an original BMW 1979 model year brochure. Has a Browns side stand. This is a nearly all original, triple matching numbers (engine, frame and frame tag) bike...I say "nearly" because the fairing, while a correct BMW replacement unit, is not the original fairing. All original paint except the fairing. There could be lots of reasons why the original is missing, but I can find no evidence that the bike has ever been down. The smoke red paint is decent for the bike's age and if you had the gold pin stripes re-done, the bike would really pop. Here is an interesting fact that most people, even airhead aficionados, do not know. In 1979, there were only 104 BMW R100Ss imported into the US. This makes the 79 R100S ten times more rare than the rarest R90S, the 1974, which had 1005 units brought into the US for sale. If you look at craigslist today, someone is selling a 1977 or early 1978 BMW R100S (has spoke wheels) but listing it as a 1979. It is not. Serial numbers for the 1979 R100S start with 6165001. Of all the 70's vintage BMW airheads, S bikes, the R90S and the R100S, have always been at the top of the collector market. According to the "BMW Boxer Twins Bible", the 1979 R100S second rarest BMW airhead ever produced during the 70's decade, behind the 1978 BMW R100RS-T (what ever that is and not the 1978 R00RS!). It is also the second rarest S model ever made, right behind the 1980 R100S, which had 48 units imported into the USA and was the last year for US R100S production (BMW carried on with the R100CS after 1980). The 1979 R100S received a few distinguishing features over the 1978 BMW R100S, including black front fork sliders, ribbed timing chain cover, and a unique, one-year only starter motor cover that simply said "BMW" cast into the cover. Additionally, this was the first year BMW introduced the stronger and better shifting ribbed-case 5 speed gear box. When I bought this bike, my original intention was to restore it to concours condition, like I do with my BMW R90S restorations,....but after riding the bike, I decided not to since it runs so well and I wanted to ride it without the fear of adding patina to a restored machine. Everything works on the bike. The bike runs strong and and the transmission shifts beautifully. The front brakes work better than most airheads I have ridden, but the rear disc brake is weak. I have ordered parts to fix the rear brake and it will be done before bike is delivered to new owner. The speedometer reads faster that the driven speed, but I have been told this is common. The inside of the gas tank is clean with its factory red coating. There are no dents in the gas tank. The charging system works as it should. It has a newer Motobat battery in it. Seat is in excellent condition. New Continental tires. Continental still makes the same tire and tread pattern installed on the old BMW airheads back in the 70's, so this is a nice period correct touch. Front forks were rebuilt this past January. Both Bing carburetors were rebuilt using Bing kits from BMW. Bings are correct 94/40/107 and 94/40/108 factory installed 40mm units for US delivery. European models received different Bings. I have clear California title in hand and the bike is located in Southern California. Current CA registration until June 2019. Buyer is responsible for arranging and paying for shipping, but I am happy to assist. I buy and sell several BMW airheads each year, all R90Ss, so I have a good connection with a shipper. I require a non-refundable paypal deposit of $250 within 24 hours after purchase. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ping me. For those third parties who like to help people sell their vehicles, please note that I do not need any!! Thanks for looking. Mark 858 775 0359
