2001 BMW 740iM-Sport PackageHeated SeatsSunroofStepTronic TransmissionFactory 18" M Parrel WheelsSport SuspensionSport Contour SeatsShadow Line Exterior TrimVavona Redwood TrimM Sport Steering WheelConvenience Package If you have been on the hunt for a very unique and well optioned 740i M Sport, consider this car...not your average 740i...please google M Sport Package if you are not familiar. This M Sport, with the best colors, excellent care, and open checkbook maintenance by a very educated enthusiast over the past 12 years make this car stand out from the pack, and in candid terms...I'll explain why. While the 740 is known to be a pretty bulletproof car with a excellent reputation, they are not without fault, and serious consideration should be taken when purchasing one of these cars. I am of the opinion that the most expensive 740 you can buy, is likely the most inexpensive to purchase. These cars may be somewhat reasonably priced these days, but the prices vary widely, and I think they have somewhat less to do with mileage, and more to do with service. These cars are over 15 years old, and while the 4.4 has proven to be a 300K mile plus engine...they are known to leak oil, from pretty much everywhere. This really has to due with age, not mileage...and these engines are notorious for dried out oil pan gaskets, timing cover seal leaks, rocker cover seal leaks, valley pan gaskets, ect. My advice is to purchase one that has had most of these seals replaced...as they ALL leak. These engines have sub-par radiators as well...the updated versions are less likely to blow up on you. The Death Shudder!!!! I see this in 8 out of 10 of these cars I drive...very difficult to chase down! These cars are notorious. for having suspension, drag link issues! You'll start to notice this shudder at highway speeds, as suspensions wear further...due to the heavy weight over the front wheels, I tend to see further issues...remember, these cars are affordable now, but the parts are still a fortune! This is likely the biggest issue! BMW decided to give us "lifetime" transmission fluid. So, 90% of these cars have been driven on 15 year old fluid, and continue to do so! They are also driving on degrading 15 year old transmission filters...unreal! Sorry for that dissertation on these cars, but I see these cars all over eBay...just time bombs...most of them needing at least $5,000 in deferred maintenance. If you don't buy mine, consider these issues...before you buy one. Now on to the car. We've owned her since 2005. She's never been driven in the winter and was purchased as a Certified Pre-Owned. We opted for the extended warranty good until 100K miles. I'd typically spend my Saturdays at the Dealer...half jokingly explaining to my wife that I was tending to the car. Candidly though...I'd always suspect a new leak, and I don't think there is a gasket in this drivetrain that is from 2001. I'm the anal customer the Dealer loves to hate. I'm always there, like a stool in a bar, complaining about some new issue that Youtube told me about. Needless to say, the maintenance is exemplary. The car has had all the aforementioned issued tended to...and this really adds tons of value to the car. This was always a weekend car, so it does not have the typical "Starbucks Door Dings" or the grocery store bumper scuffs. She does not leak anything....a 740 that does not leak is a very real rarity! The car runs and drives at least as good as it did when it had half the miles on it. She's never been in ANY type of accident, and my paint meter shows .042-.048 which is pretty typical for a car with no paint work that has not been excessively buffed. The interior is like new, with no bad pixels in the dash, no hazy or cracked veneers...the seats are still powdery...like a new car. She's always been garage kept, so sun fade and corrosion are not an issue... This is a excellent example of a car ready to drive another 100k miles without the worry of a hefty investment and down time of a poorly maintained vehicle. If you want a inexpensive 740i...look all over eBay...they are all here...all leaking oil, fresh from the Dealer Auction...where they were traded in because the repair bill forced them to sell the car. However, if you are looking for a car that was maintained to a level that defies economic common sense, this would be that car. I am a collector of fine vintage and collectible cars...this car is no exception...bring your mechanic! I challenge you to find a better example, with any miles on it. I'm changing hobbies and decided to sell some of my collection. This car is for sale on other sites and auction can and will be ended in the event of a sale outside of eBay (which is what typically happens) You can reach me via my cell phone at. 630-273-7595...at any reasonable time...lets make a deal! I have a copy of the carfax which I'll post, save your money. It says "4" owners but it was actually 2 owners...the Car Fox isn't very good at understanding that people move. Look at my feedback...I've sold quite a bit of my car collection...complaint free! I understand that is hard to do. Car comes with a "phone book" sized binder of service records, all books, manuals, window sticker, ect. If you need assistance with auto shipping, I have a broker account...and would be happy to assist with getting you a wholesale quote on shipping!
