Vehicle Detail
The Overview Offered for an aspiring R107 owner or collector is this nice classic 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL Roadster. It is finished in the uncommon Black Pearl Metallic (199), which is almost like a charcoal gray, over gray leather hides with black soft top. Carfax indicates continuous ownership in Florida through 2013 and then New Jersey/NY since then and also shows multiple service records with no accidents or damage reported at time of pulling report. Driven just over 118,000 miles since new. It features a great running 227 horsepower 5.6L V8 engine mated to the factory 4 speed automatic transmission with four wheel disc brakes with ABS, power windows, factory hard/soft tops, and driver side airbag. Sold with clean and clear NJ title. ExteriorThe exterior of this 560 SL is in overall very good condition. The car recently received a $1,000 paint correction and engine detailing and has a great shine. Very clean and straight body and I invite you to come inspect it yourself before auction closes. As you can tell the front spoiler is cracked but this can be easily replaced or removed. There is one spot of corrosion on the driver's door sill as pictured in the google drive link below. Aside from that, the panels look very clean, due to its spending a majority of its life down in Florida. The trunk recently stopped opening, but you can hear the lock engaging. All engine compartment and door sill stickers appear to be in place as well, and door locks work as intended. Undercarriage looks solid upon my and others' inspections. The Black Pearl metallic has a deep luster with a few minor nicks, scratches/dings, and other light cosmetic blemishes as to be expected on a car of this vintage. All glass in good shape, working power windows, etc. Lights, high beams work as they should. Wheels have some pitting and tires are only in fair condition, but overall this is one stunning and well-preserved 30-year old Mercedes in a not often seen color. InteriorI think the photos will reflect the lovely interior, but the interior is in very good shape overall with odometer, speedometer and other assorted gauges in great working shape. There are some custom gauges in the center stack to monitor ambient temperature, amperage, and battery voltage, along with an aftermarket stereo. Original books, some service records, and first aid kit are present. In addition, although no longer functional due to usage of analog, a period correct car phone is installed, a very cool talking point and all the rage at time this car was first released. Car antenna and radio work as they should. A/c does not blow cold and will likely need to be converted to R134a, not a very complicated job, and many European repair shops are well-versed in the conversion. Sun visors are in good shape, not puffy like a lot of other SLs on the market. Seats and leather have held up remarkably well for the age of the car. The srs light does come on from time to time and there are some cracks in the dash like a lot of these cars have. Speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge, tach, oil pressure gauge, etc. function as they should. I have not had the hardtop off due to its weight so I'm not sure of the soft top condition but it was in good condition at time of purchase and you are welcome to come by to check it out and give me a hand in lifting off the hardtop! The seats, parcel shelf, and carpets are very clean as the photos show. Bolsters are very clean and free of cracking, with an even gray hide throughout. Wood trim also appears to be in good shape with minor cracking near the base, as pictured in the link below. Overall, this is a very comfortable and well laid-out, well preserved cockpit that is very comfortable over long or short trips. Still has that great rich leather smell that MBs used to have! The DriveMechanically, this Benz is very solid. It starts up easily and runs great and makes a lot of power and torque. Great passing power and smooth shifts from the gearbox. These are stout powertrains and are quite under-stressed. Consistent brake pedal feel, great braking ability, and good supension/supple ride quality. The car has a substantial feel to it, with minimal play in the steering. We recently had the mechanic replace the voltage regulator on the alternator and do a mechanical inspection and it checked out great. I welcome any PPIs. A very strong runner that can keep pace with modern day traffic and a great cruiser that gets a lot of thumbs-ups. Terms and Conditions1.
