Vehicle Detail
It's too nice to be called a "survivor" and it never was damaged so not "restored" it's very close to "like new". Nobody could restore this perfectly, leaving no sign of work. Some photos are a little out of focus, but I think you can see there is only one scratch on it, the left edge of the fairing, so it apparently went down easy, once in its life. It has evidently always been garaged, the seats and decals are all perfect, showing no weathering. The ONLY corroded place is the clutch cover, but it's much cleaner than on others like this, and I'm going to polish it, but these photos are already taken and the ad published. I polished the GL650 label on the engine, so it looks like new, and I will do that to the clutch cover. If you searched for this, you already know the bike. Others who stumbled across it, this is the last year of production for this design, and the GL650 was one model year only. GL500's were made in 1981 and 1982, and the Interstate gets you the fairing and hard bags in all years. The same engine design goes back to the CX500 in 1978, liquid-cooled and shaft drive. Everything you ever wanted to know, and a wealth of technical information, are available on a website dedicated to these, from enthusiastic riders all over the world, who put long touring miles on them. I have bought, ridden, and sold seven of these, counting three that I bought purposely to flip. This one I've had for four years, I bought with 24K miles in Brunswick Maine from an experienced rider who also had a GoldWing which he preferred,. He bought this 650 from the original owner, an elderly man in Canada. He did not mention knowing of any major work on it, so the "triple bypass" that experts on that website speak of probably has not been done. It's not leaking oil or water and it's charging the battery, so I claim it "ain't broke and I ain't fixing it". I installed a NOS starter, not cheap, I bought after the original one got slow cranking. The original one comes with it if you want to swap the guts to get the correct look of the black case, and it's an easy job. I just bought a battery a couple of weeks ago, July 2017. Photos taken last fall and new rear tire at 30K miles when photos taken, now a little over 31K, and still riding a little, but it will not be over 31,500 when this auction ends. The front tire was new at 25K, just after I bought it. Last winter, I went through the rear suspension to lube it with the correct Honda "assembly paste" moly grease, a tough job, so it will be creak-free for years to come. It gets 45-50 mpg, and is absolutely reliable, as these are well-reputed to be. It comes with original tools, the original factory cover, and a shop manual, but no original owners manual. It has the aftermarket "extender" frame so that both the rear seat and rear box are mounted. Without the extender you can mount either the box or the seat, not both. One key fits ignition, tank, hardbags, rear box, and you get a spare one. Absolutely everything works as original. I ran it up to 100mph last fall and it was still accelerating strongly. I'm not in the practice of doing that, but I noticed how smooth it was with the new rear tire at 75, so kept on it. Why sell? After 60 years with no injury on motorcycles, I notice myself making some mistakes, plus I was in a car when we were hit by a texter. It's time to hang up the helmet. If you are out of town, I can pick you up at the Manchester-Boston airport in 15 min. and you can ride home in the beautiful New England weather, on our fun winding roads. But if you want to have it shipped, it's easy for you to arrange. It will sell. I reduced the reserve price. Thanks for reading this much, (if you did).
