General - Like so many other ads on eBay these days, this is a project that I will probably never get around to, so I want to pass it along to someone who will. It is an awesome 1949 Chevrolet, five window, shortened wheelbase, series 4400, that has a great stance and would make a exceptional project. Any more people are making awesome show and or driver outfits out of cab over and other back in the day vehicles; that where this one fits in. It is an interesting candidate for either restoration or to hot rod, and with very little work can be driven while you work on it. The truck has a clear Montana title. Exterior - The best part about this truck is there is there is virtually no rust, we are very dry here in Montana and use no salt. The cab corners are great (see pictures). The floorboards need no repair, (see pictures). No matter whether restoration or hot rod is your goal you are money and time ahead by starting with as solid and rust fee vehicle as you can possibly find. It does however have 68 years of what some people today call patina. I have used scotch pads and rubbing compound and a buffer and had fantastic results, (see picture of a 49 Ford I did this way).. This little truck has a unique box, I kept thinking I had seen this somewhere before and if finally came to me; it is a cut down bed of an old Army duce and a half. The bed and tailgate are in good condition. There is a dent in the front of the bed. The tailgate, sides, and floor are in very good condition. The running boards which are usually beat up or missing altogether and are difficult to find are in great shape on this truck. Not sure if the glass is exterior or interior. The windshield and three rear glasses are crack free and very nice. Both side windows were broken out recently. However, with the buy it now option, I have two brand new, one piece side windows, still in the box, (see picture), and they will accompany the truck. The tires are pretty much what you would expect for an old high-country truck that has sat outside most of its life. They did. however, hold air long enough for me to load on my trailer. If you know these old Chevys, you understand that the front wheels are five lug and the rears are ten lug. Spare wheels are hard to find and expensive, however I have three spare wheels, (see pictures) one for the front and two for the rear. With the buy it now option, I will send all three along with the truck. The cab clearance lights give the truck a retro deco look. Mechanical - The engine, I believe, is a 235 which is either original or correct for the era. It does not run, but that is more due to my mechanical inability than the trucks fault. The engine has been converted to 12 volt, it spins over just fine but I cannot get spark. The transmission is a four speed and it goes into each gear and clutch feels alright. The brakes will need rebuilt, you need to pay particular attention that you do this correctly as the old master cylinders were only a single chamber unit, so any leak anywhere and you are quickly out of brakes. The differential appears to be stock. With the buy it now option, I will furnish the truck with a good used 12 volt battery. Interior – Not much to talk about here. The seat is present but needs recovering. All gages are present and no one has cut the dash or doors for an 8 track or whatever. The radio delete plate is missing as is the glove box lid. However, with the buy it now option, I have a nice chrome glove box lid that will accompany the truck, (see picture). The interior of this truck is mostly all there, (see pictures), if you are going for an original restoration - clean it, sand it and paint it. If you are going for a hot rod you probably have your own thoughts as to what you want to do. Summary – The simplicity of a truck is what makes their restoration so popular and easy. This one would make a great project for a father and son/daughter or the guys in the shop. While this one will require some body and paint and mechanical work, much of what needs to be done is that which one would normally do anyway in either a restoration or hot rod build. The main point is you have a very solid body and clear title to work with. The old truck deserves another chance in life to tow your toys, haul your stuff and or show up at your local car show.
