Vehicle Detail
1973 PONTIAC GRAND AM Up for auction is this very unique 1973 Pontiac Grand AM. We just purchased it from an estate -it had only 1 owner until this time. Just out of storage, it was put up many years ago and was last inspected in 1994. It was built in September of 1972 and was first titled in October of 1972 so it is a very early 1973 model. It had only the one owner until we purchased it from his estate. To get it road worthy we mounted 4 new tires, installed new brake hoses, a new master cylinder and put in a new battery. The car had been heavily undercoated and it did a great job of preserving the underside and the wheel wells etc. The exterior is very weathered as can be seen in the photos but the interior looks and feels great. There is no mustiness or dampness that is often present in vehicles this age. The carpet shows some signs of wear but still presents very nicely. The frame and the body are rock solid and rust free. Straight as an arrow and no dents, this an excellent vehicle that only needs a new paint job to be a classic . The doors open and close like the day it left the showroom. The glass is in very good condition and the windows roll up and down easily. Because the exterior is so weathered the car does not appear to be in very good shape but on closer inspection it has survived very well. The floor and trunk pans are very solid (due to the heavy undercoating). The trunk floor is discolored from the glue that held the mat in place but is completely solid. We pulled the mat away to make inspect the condition of the beneath the mat. Although it looks rough at 1st glance, this Grand Am is in amazing condition overall with a fine interior, good chrome, good glass, and good straight lines and fit. The power plant is a 6.5 Litre V8 (400 c.i.) with a 2 bbl carb and a single exhaust. The exhaust is leaking at the manifold but we did not address this issue in case the new owner opts to install a dual exhaust. The frame has the cutaway needed for dual pipes (see video). The transmission is Turbo 400 Automatic. It has Power Brakes with discs in front and drums in the rear and were just serviced by our shop. They work very well with no pull or noises. The Power Steering also works well and the vehicle tracks straight down the road. This amazing survivor runs great! It starts right up, runs strong and shifts perfectly. Tracking is straight and predictable with absolutely no issues. The brakes also work great. It rolls on 4 new tires and comes with 5 Honeycomb wheels that are in good condition. The only issues to disclose other than the need to be painted are the aforementioned exhaust leak and 2 rust holes on the underside of the hood (See photos). The header panel around the grille had deteriorated so we pulled it off and the rubber impact strip is gone from the front bumper is gone. We are also disclosing that while this car originally had factory air, the compressor and some of the A/C lines are missing. We have tried to represent this vehicle as thoroughly as we can in our video and the still photos so that there are no surprises to the buyer. We have a clear PA Title in our name ready to transfer to the new owner. The vehicle is currently garaged at my place of business in Glassport PA (A suburb of Pittsburgh near McKeesport PA. Terms of sale are a $200 deposit at the close of the auction via PayPal with the balance to be paid with a wire transfer. Send any questions by e-mail or call Joe at (724)502-0035 and we will be happy to answer. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding! It was based on the GM A platform (A-body) along with the LeMans and GTO, Chevy Chevelle, Olds Cutlass Supreme, and the Buick Century. The Grand Am name was derived from two other cars in the Pontiac lineup (“Grand” signifying Grand Prix luxury and “Am” for Trans Am performance) and was designed as America’s answer to European luxury/sport vehicles. Our Grand Am was built in September of 1972 and titled in October of 1972 so it is a very early model. The engine lineup featured a 2-bbl 400 cu (6.5L) in V8 with single exhaust rated at 170 hp and a 4-bbl version with dual exhaust making 230 hp. Pontiac also offered a 455 cu in (7.5L) power plant with 4-bbl carb and dual exhaust making 250 hp. A Turbo-hydramatic 400 automatic transmission was standard and almost all Grand Ams came this way. A 4-speed manual was available on the 400/4-bbl engine but was not popular. Our Grand Am has the 400 cu in 2-bbl motor. The 73 Grand Am had a unique flexible urethane front fascia nose. It was known as the ‘Endura’ and was supposed to return to it’s original shape after a minor collision. This fascia has been removed on our car as it had deteriorated over the years of storage. I have found a web site that sells replacement fascias for the 73 Grand Am for about $744. Check them out at motorealm.com. Additionally, Grand Ams featured a Radial Tuned Suspension (RTS) with front and rear sway bars plus a 1.12 inch front stabilizer bar. The interior has Strato bucket seats upholstered in Naugahyde vinyl with manual recliners and adjustable lumbar supports. The instrument panel is from the Grand Prix and features a Rally gauge cluster with fuel, oil, water, and volt gauges. The sporty three spoke padded steering wheel has brushed aluminum spokes and the wood trim on the dash and center console is Genuine Crossfire African Mahogany. As you can see in the photos the interior in our Grand Am is remarkably well preserved.
