Up for auction is a rust free two owner Mercedes Benz 380 SL with hard top in nice driving condition. It has been a Texas car all of it's life having spent nearly all of it garage kept. For the last 5 years the car has been used only a few hundred miles and is part of the reason why it is being sold. It was obtained from the original owner who lived in the Dallas area and drove it for most of it's life. The car was sold within the family to the current owner. I am listing this car for the current owners(whom happens to be my neighbor) so I will do my best to answer any questions you might have. It has all of its original panels with no accidents and carries a great shine for a 33 year old car with original paint. There are a few areas where the paint has checked on the front fender along with two small areas of scratches of unknown origins. It starts, drives and stops nicely so it is a great candidate for anyone who would want to start a rolling full mechanical restoration. You would still be able to enjoy the car for weekend drives saving the final paint work for a later year after the cars value has risen. Having a flawless rust free and straight original body is highly desirable. As with any original 33 year old car there are always things that need attention so I will do my best to address the known good points of the car as well as known areas that need work. As with any car of this nature, it does not come with a warranty and is sold as is. That being said, the car is currently licensed, inspected and operational. After driving it I would feel confidant in saying that the car could be driven home by the new owner if desired, so do not mistakenly think that this car has just been drug out of the garage after sitting for years. The good:- The car starts, stops and drives well- The body paint is original and rust free- The windshield is in new condition with no chips or breaks- The interior is in serviceable condition- All the gauges work with the exception of the odometer(speedo works fine)- The hardtop and liner is in excellent condition- The soft top is only 6 years old and was almost new when the current owner took possession. It has been stored for most of the time since the hardtop was always used. The pictures show the soft top up but not locked into position therefore realize that the rear window will straighten out when stretched. - Tires are nearly new- New battery- New shocks all the way around- Brakes and rotors replaced all the way around- Tune up- The engine sounds fantastic with virtually no valve noise. I have a video clip with sound if anyone wants it. The bad:- The drivers seat has a small chunk missing from the lower bolster- There are two splits in the dash cover- Although the shocks have been replaced the springs are still weak and need replacement for it to ride as new. - The rubber body seals around the car are showing their age. Although most are still usable they are in need of a replacement at some time in the near future.- The AC will cool for about an hour or so if filled but then leaks out so it is obvious that the compressor is compressing but there is a leak somewhere either in the condenser, hoses or compressor body that is allowing it to bleed out. As anyone who has been following these cars knows, they are currently at the bottom of the price curve for collector Mercedes and are the next model type in line to begin large amounts of appreciation in the coming years.
