Vehicle Detail
A classic example of the reliable Series I model, this Discovery has been highly modified for adventure by its previous owners, both Land Rover enthusiasts. An accident on a snowy road in 2005 caused damage to the original roof panel, but the vehicle was not a total loss and the decision was made to cut the roof panel off and have a custom cage professionally built. The fabrication and execution of the cage itself was very well done, as was the custom removable canvas top. Additionally carpets were removed and the interior has been modified so that it could be safely hosed out if need be. Front seats have heavy duty waterproof canvas covers and the rear seat (which can either be flipped forward or easily unbolted for more cargo room) is covered in all-weather vinyl. The floor has received a heavy duty “bedliner” style coating, and the custom made wiring harness has been waterproofed. If you are caught in a sudden rain storm or get water inside while cleaning it is no problem at all. The original stereo has been replaced with a modern CD player that also has a USB input. There is an additional 12V outlet installed in the rear of the center console, as well as additional cabin lighting inside. While the early Discovery models such as this 1995 are more desirable for their simplicity, they aren’t without quirks- common features that can become issues. Lots of care has been taken here to address those types of issues, for example the original power steering gearbox and lines, radiator, and brake master cylinder have all been replaced. The often problematic ABS, alarm immobilizer system, and even the useless original cupholders have been deleted as preventative measures. A more accurate aftermarket temperature gauge is installed on the dash. Most similar Discovery models of this age suffer from cosmetic issues like a peeling dashboard, broken instrument cluster trim, broken power seat switches, sticky ignition lock cylinders, broken hood release mechanisms, and rust forming in the rear door jambs. This has none of those problems. When the truck had around 124,000 miles on it the original 3.9L engine was removed in favor of a 4.2L Range Rover V8, which was totally rebuilt and even got a performance camshaft. The engine computer, fuel injectors, and ignition system have all been upgraded to match and the end result is amazing. Compared to any Series I Discovery this drives like a hot rod, yet it retains the original style engine management. Meaning the heat and air conditioning are still functioning properly and spare parts are easy to get if needed. To further the reliability factor, the battery has been upgraded, the factory style starter has been upgraded to a gear reduction unit, and the original alternator changed for a high output style. This vehicle is more than just a clean Discovery with a roll cage and a canvas top- it has been set up for serious offroad use, using high quality equipment. From Rovertym Engineering came the heavy duty front and rear bumpers and rock sliders. It has 3” lift springs, with heavy duty retainers and the appropriate front and rear heavy duty suspension arms to match. Up front it has Fox shocks, and in the rear Bilstein 7100 series remote reservoir units with 12” of travel. All the shock mounts are upgraded to match, as are both driveshafts. The differentials are re-geared to 4.11 ratio, with lockers- a Detroit in the rear and Trutrac in the front. Axle shafts are also heavy duty replacements both front and rear, so too are the hub drive flanges. The front brakes have been upgraded to the Defender style with new vented rotors and calipers, and extended length braided stainless steel brake hoses installed front and rear. The 255/85R16 Maxxis tires are almost brand new and measure out to a bit over 33” tall. There is no rubbing of the tires while turning thanks to hubcentric wheel spacers. Steering upgrades include heavy duty stainless steel linkages and relocation of the stabilizer. The suspension geometry has been carefully set up in the correct manner, and previously the fenders slightly trimmed so the potential is there for even larger tires to be installed, if desired. It has a nearly new Smittybuilt 10,000lb winch in the front (with wireless remote option) that has a heavy duty TJM hook and synthetic line installed. The truck is even pre-wired for bumper mounted offroad lights- it formerly had a pair of metal housing 100W Hella 4000 series fog lamps installed. Overall, this Discovery has been carefully built (well over $25,000 spent) to be not only unstoppable offroad, but mild mannered and reliable enough to drive on a daily basis. The steering wheel tracks true while cruising down the road, the power windows work smoothly and quietly, the horn, wipers, and all lights work as they should. However all old vehicles have notable issues, and while the list is short, this one is no different. Park it in one place for a few days and it is not unusual to see a couple of oil drops. The dark metallic jade “Epsom Green” paint is all original, and with a good coat of wax it looks OK but up close you can see it has its fair share of “trail stripes” and scuff marks- and there is slight fading on the hood. A professional detailer could probably do wonders to it but it also looks pretty good as is. There are dings here and there in the bodywork, nothing major. Run a history report and it will show the accident in 2005 but it has been confirmed it was not a total loss vehicle and in fact does still have a clear title. Other than that, there are no surprises here. It starts on the first try every time. It runs and drives great, shifts and steers with confidence, doesn’t wander or wobble on the road, transitions effortlessly to offroad driving, and anytime they are needed the brakes bring it to a stop with ease. The number of photos I can share here are limited, but I have taken many photos of the vehicle and if there is something you would like to have a shot of I am glad to accommodate your request.
