Vehicle Detail
I purchased this 914 1.7 Liter in August of 1983 with my brother. Depending on where the car was stored, the title changed hands between us. In the mid 80’s we decided the car needed more power. We installed a 3.8 Liter Buick Turbo motor. The turbo had too much lag, so the turbo was removed, pistons replaced, new camshaft with roller rockers were installed. The motor adapter plate and custom radiator are made by Renegade Hybrids. I have considered buying a nice motor and converting the car back to factory 4 cylinder. With the radiator in place, maybe a Subaru STI conversion? I need to stop with new project ideas, I don’t have time or space. With 30+ years of ownership, countless parts have been replaced and many thousands of dollars spent. I have over $23k in receipts. The brake fluid was flushed 30 years ago and replaced with Silicone DOT5 to keep moisture out. The car starts and runs, does not overheat. The tires are new. No radio or speakers are included. The wheels are not authentic Fuchs alloys. They are manufactured by American Racing. Why have I kept this car so long? It was my first car. Why am I selling it? I have too many cars and not enough space. If at all possible, I would highly recommend seeing this car in person if possible. No Reserve Auction! On Nov-04-16 at 13:36:30 PDT, seller added the following information: Is the car road ready? It is road ready but needs more bugs worked out. It starts right up and drives fine. Can the car be use as a daily driver? No. There is currently no heater. No radio or speakers. Any issues? Not really, needs more time tweaking everything. Do you also have it listed locally, with a buy it now price? No, I currently only have it listed on Ebay. How far are you from the Kansas City Airport?I am about 40 minutes south of MCI. Yes, that is the nearest commercial airport. Private planes can land just south of me. When was the Buick V6 installed? The original install was in 1984. I started with a Jade Enterprise adapter plate....it did not work. Lots of machine shop time and finally tossed in the towel. Then I went with a Renegade Hybrids adapter. They use a high performance 200mm VW clutch. I am still using the stock 901 gearbox. I went through a few radiator designs. My first attempt had it horizontal flat. That did not dissipate heat. Then I fabricated a Chevy radiator....did not like the look. I purchased a unit from Renegade for $1000 and fit it in nicely with two fans. I have not driven it much and keep tinkering with it. A few hundred miles at best. Do you have the factory 4 cylinder engine? No, the factory motor was sold years ago. What transaxle are you using? The factory 901 gearbox. Is there any rust in the Hell Hole or any other part of the car? Hell Hole is not bad. Surface rust before I painted it with POR15 paint. It's not perfect but not bad. No rust on the bottom side of it. Rust showing on the front passenger fender. It's below the paint and hard to see but starting to bubble. Surface rust on the battery tray, but it was replaced in the mid 80's when the tray rusted but the surrounding area was OK. The rear suspension pivot points have surface rust. The belly pan has no rust. Do all of the gauges work? Gauges work except for the Cylinder Head Temp. I keep tinkering with the motor and have not hooked it up. I originally wanted it when the motor was turbocharged. Its a new gauge just needs the sender unit installed. I still have the Appearance Group 3 hole center console piece to remove all the extra dials. Does it leak any fluids? Just recently I put on a new oil pan gasket and new valve cover gaskets. They were showing some wetness. Good now. Nothing that drips. I just don't drive it much at all. I think 38 miles total last year. I go out and start it and drive it around the block. Anything mechanically wrong or needing repair with the motor? I put 930 Turbo Tie rods on the car. MISTAKE....it took out all the slop but the damn thing is so responsive at highway speed, a minor change in the steering input will give a lane change. So then I put the factory size tires back on to add some slop. The 195/50 tires were too quick to turn in. Good for Autocross maybe. The motor raps up so quick that you can't shift quick enough. I have a vibration at high RPM. I need to evaluate how I have the alternator bracket setup. I think the sound / vibration is coming from it. I had the motor balanced when it was built after taking the turbo off. I installed a Crane Cam, Roller Rockers, Holley 390cfm carb. The center console is not finished. Need a couple of 90 degree brackets to mount my new gauge pod. The speaker boxes are just setting there and not screwed down yet. Deciding if I even need sound. With the V6 install, there is no heat. I was deciding if I want water heat or just a simple electrical heater.
