1975 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SALON A LITTLE HISTORY... I bought this awesome car back in Nov. 1988 off of the original owner's family. He bought it new in Tampa Fl (Documentation still in glove box), and drove it up here to PA in Spring 1988 to spend the summer away from the Florida heat with his son and his family. While here, he suffered a massive stroke and passed away. His granddaughter was going to commute to college in the Cutlass, but it wasn't "cool enough" for her. So the family then took it to sell at a friend's mobile home dealership. This is where I found it when I came home from Navy boot camp. I needed a good dependable car to drive to my new duty station in Norfolk VA, and back up to here in PA for my off weekends. I have had the Cutlass ever since..... FEATURES AND OPTIONS * Power steering * Power brakes (Front disc and rear drum)* Power locks * Power trunk release* Tilt wheel * Body color sport mirrors* FACTORY A/C! * Body color Rallye II sport wheels (With all centercaps and beauty rings present) The Cutlass was originally equipped with an AM/FM radio, but stopped working a number of years ago. I installed an Alpine AM/FM with cassette, and had 2 Pioneer speakers in wooden boxes on the back seat. I have recently removed it all, but will include with the sale. The factory A/C was blowing ice cold up until several years ago, when the compressor belt broke. I did not replace it because I was putting it back into storage, and at the time felt it wasn't necessary for me to do. I'm sure that if the new owner were to replace the belt, and give it a quick recharge, it will work great. Now would be a great time to convert the system over to R-134A, because I'm sure if you could even FIND any of the old R-12 freon, it would be ridiculously expensive. ENGINE AND MECHANICAL This 1975 Cutlass Salon has the infamous Oldsmobile Rocket 350 engine with a 4 bbl carburetor, and just over 118,000 original miles showing on the odometer. This engine is coupled with a Turbohydramatic 350 automatic transmission with a console floor shift. I am truly convinced that this is one of the best engines that GM has ever produced. It does not use or burn oil. The right valve cover has some slight seepage. In all of the long, grueling trips from Virginia to Pennsylvania and back, the engine only let me down ONE time. It threw a timing chain 60 miles from my home. I had it transported by rollback to my house, spent all weekend installing a new timing chain, and drove back to Virginia that Sunday evening with no further problems. This engine runs strong and powerful, and starts every time with 2 pumps of the gas and a turn of the key. This car also has a limited-slip differential that perform flawlessly with no slippage or noise. The brakes are very strong, and stops the car on the dime with no pulling in either direction. BODY Very good for a 41 year old car! There is no collision damage or major body repairs that I can see ever having been done to the car. There is, however, the usual nicks and little parking lot dents on the sides, two dime-size dents on the hoof from something falling out of the garage rafters, and a very minor wrinkle on the right front fender at the rear edge of the wheel well. This just "appeared" one day on the Navy base in Norfolk VA.I am pleased to say there is only ONE surface rust spot on the entire car that will need attention, and will be easily repairable. It is on the lower left side directly in front of the left rear wheel. And I attribute that rust spot to that single winter of 2009-10, when life circumstances forced me into using this car as a daily driver. That winter was the only one that this car has ever been driven in. It was ONLY driven in sunny, weather-permitting weekend trips to home from Fall 1988 to Summer 1990 while stationed in Virginia. Other than that one rust spot, this car is absolutely SOLID throughout - and that includes the floorpans, trunk, and frame. As far as the paint on this car - it will need to be repainted. There are visible spots where the original owner touched up stone chips and such, and looks like he may have had the roof repainted at one time. Surprisingly though, The Horizon Blue paint still has a considerable amount of shine to it! The original factory vinyl landau roof has been replaced, I'm guessing in early 1988 before the original owner took his final trip up to PA. Most likely, the Florida sun destroyed the original vinyl. Whoever replace it used a very high quality, slightly padded vinyl, and they did a beautiful job installing it. Frequent applications of Armour-All and STP Son-of-a-Gun over the years has kept this roof in perfect condition to this present day.The chrome bumpers have slight pitting on the very tops, and a small amount of wear on the left front top corner, but the bottoms of the bumpers shine like mirrors with no rust or pitting at all. I am very pleased to mention that that the original urethane filler pieces between the body and the bumpers are present and in perfect condition! The chromed body trim shines well too - even most of the chrome plated plastic things. The chrome plating peeled off the opera window trim some time ago, but at least they're still on the car! I heard that they are really difficult to find. All the badging and emblems are still present on the car and in great condition. This includes the little rows of international flags which denotes this is a Cutlass Salon. INTERIOR THE "GOOD" - The headliner is perfect! No sags, rips, or discoloration. The dash pad has no cracks or is discolored - more evidence of generous applications of Armour All! The leather wrapped steering wheel is in like new condition. All of the interior door trim panels and rear side interior trim panels are in perfect, like new condition. The carpeting looks great for it's age, with only slight fading and wear. I'm going to give it a good cleaning before the car sells. THE "NOT SO GOOD" - The rear seat cushion is in perfect condition, and has only been sat in a handful of times since I've owned it. But that's where it stops. The Florida sun did a number on the top of the back seat. It will need to be recovered. I have had blue hand towels over the top of the seat to look better. The front seats need new fabric recovering as well, and I have seat covers on them. They will go with the car.I actually removed the electric clock at one point, tore it apart, cleaned and lubricated it, reinstalled it, and it worked perfect for a long while - then it died. MISCELLANEOUS The Cutlass has new tires, new shock absorbers, all new hoses, a new master cylinder installed 5 years ago, rebuilt the carburetor a few years ago, installed fuels filters, and new exhaust parts. The Cutlass passed the feared and rigid PA State Inspection in 2009, and has only been driven 1700 miles since then. It should pass with no problem. OTHER ISSUES There are ONLY TWO other main issues with the Cutlass. It has a pretty good transmission leak. I thought it was the pan gasket, so I replaced it (and the filter too while I was at it), but still leaked. I suspect an input shaft seal, but I don't have the time or suitable accommodations to drop and fix it. The other issue is the gas gauge shows pegged way above full all the time. Most likely a sending unit gone bad? TO SUMMARIZE.... This will be a really awesome car for somebody looking for an easy restoration, or to have a rock-solid, head-turning daily driver (I don't recommend it for a winter car - it is LOUSY in the snow!). You could even do some sort of custom job - from mild to full-blown radical (Gasp!). This Cutlass is definitely not a trailer queen....but it can be made into one without breaking the bank! I tried to be as complete and as honest that I could be with the description and details of my Cutlass. Because I would expect somebody else to be just as honest with me! If I forgot anything, believe me that it's purely unintentional. TERMS AND CONDITIONS 1. This car is for sale to U.S. citizens in the continental 48 states ONLY! If you are from Nigeria, India, or some other 3rd world country, sorry about your luck. 2. I do have the car listed for sale locally. The balance of the purchase price will be paid WITHIN 5 DAYS by either CASH or PayPal (NONREFUNDABLE!), and once again, absolutely NO checks will be accepted! Just in case somebody doesn't understand, CASH or PayPal in my hand means the title for my Cutlass in yours! Real simple. And I don't play games either - I've seen it all, so don't even try.Paying any money for the car doesn't give you the right just to come check it out and kick the tires. I will not tolerate this. IF YOU PAY ME FOR THE CAR, IT WILL BE YOURS!!! 5. I highly recommend making arrangements to transport the Cutlass to it's new home. I WILL NOT MAKE THESE ARRANGEMENTS FOR YOU!! However, I WILL help you load it up onto your rollback or lowboy, but that's it.I DO NOT recommend throwing your dealer plate onto the car and driving it home - no matter how close you live to the Altoona PA area. If you DO decide to drive it, it may very well make the trip, but you better bring along some bottles of Dexron III transmission fluid and a funnel - you're going to need it.! And the car's PA inspection sticker has lapsed too. I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF YOU GET TICKETED, OR IF YOU HAVE A BREAKDOWN!!! I think you will be very pleased with this 1975 Cutlass Salon! From what I understand, these 1970's mid-sized automobiles are gaining in renewed popularity in collector and enthusiasts circles, so hurry and snap this very good example up before it's gone! If you would like more information or more photos, please e-mail me! Thank you very much!
