Vehicle Detail
1979 Honda CBX Up for auction is another wonderful example of a timeless motor-bike... The CBX is without a doubt a force to be reckoned with then and today it is still a handful if not respected. This is a cornerstone bike and every collection should have at least one, and if you're a Honda guy, many more. I won’t go too much into detail on the performance or specifications and such, as that's what the internet is there for. I could go on about why this bike is special and why you need to have one in your collection, but that is why you're looking at it now...so here are the details about this particular one. As you should already know these bikes are hard to find… Ok let me re-frame that, these are hard to find that are, low miles, and in good working and cosmetic condition with all or most stock parts. There are lots of used CBX's that come up for sale now and again with lots of miles and or excessive wear, but to me, these are not collector bikes, just used bikes. This bike is in my opinion a “great" example of a collector bike. I say great because of the condition being not perfect, but very nice, it has had multiple owners and although that is not the best case scenario for me, the paperwork I have on this motorcycle is second to none, showing the paper trail from new all the way to me with the mileage documented all the way through. I have the documentation from when purchased new 1/25/1980 from Ralph’s Cycle Shop in South Orange NJ along with original pre-checklist (you just don’t see these often). The sales slip showed that the bike was delivered in silver color but ordered with a complete set of black bodywork (more on that later). Tank, side covers, fenders, the works. Very cheap in today's dollars (LOL). The bike had one service (this was a break-in service) while under his care at 778 miles on 7/28/83. The paper trail picks up again with the second owners. I say owners because the bike was bought by two owners but titled only in one of their names. The paperwork documents this. The bike went to the second owner who lived in Morristown, NJ on 4/29/89 and it had covered 2,482 miles when he got the bike. They owned it for 9 years and only put on a measly 628 miles while in their care. This bike has lived a charmed life for sure and was sold to the third owner on 4-28-98 showing 3,110 miles. The bike then stayed with this owner till 11-7-09 and covered 0 miles as this owner was a collector and looked after this bike with care till it was sold to me in 2009. From there it was only ridden a few times before being put away. The condition and the mileage were unbelievable, as it was in awesome shape. Rims are in perfect shape and I believe to be original tires (those that are in the know will let me know for sure). It does have low miles and the bike should tell that story and it does. The tank was clean, no rust or paintwork had been done and it started right up and ran and idled very well. The blinkers show no signs of fading which is very common, just wonderful. I talked to the owner for hours as he was a multiple CBX club member and a fanatic. He had a lot of knowledge, paperwork and reports on this bike. Stuff like an Ian Smith report, early Tim’s catalogs and such and early CBX press magazines. He was clearly an enthusiast. I love buying a bike from an enthusiast due to their passion and care taken on collecting everything pertaining to the bike. The bike was converted back to its original color of silver. He told me the story of how the original owner bought the bike as a left-over but wanted the “new for 1980" color of black. He then saved all the silver bodywork and was handed down carefully from owner to owner. The owner before me converted it back to the silver parts. He liked the 1980 model year version of the tail because it had a locking trunk, so he bought that and had it painted to match the bike. That tail is still on the bike (not the original). I have since sold off all the black bodywork and original silver tail (the 1980 trunk tail is on the bike now). It also came with all the original parts removed when the sport kit was installed. Yes this bike has the sport kit installed! This was an accessory which as the name suggests added more of a sports feel to the bike with special handlebars, pegs brake lines and such. It was quite a kit and transformed the bike dramatically. I have the original recopy for that kit as well. Lastly the bike has Chrome crash bars and a chrome valve cover. Both are beautiful and can be removed by the purists but I felt belonged as they add a nice touch. Once home the bike was stripped down to frame and motor. The bike was in great shape underneath as well and was cleaned up, oil and filter changed, fuel and air filters changed, tank and carbs drained, battery removed and discarded then put into climate controlled storage. I have all the receipts of parts that were ordered and installed. All put into a binder for the new owner. This bike would make a nice addition to an existing collection and or start a new one. This bike is surely going to appreciate over time. Please take the time to look over the pictures (sorry for some of them being blurry or just out of focus) in great detail and decide if this bike is the right fit for you, ask questions if needed. Good luck and have fun! I have had a lot of interest on this bike and a lot of people whom want me to end the auction. I will not end the auction period, so don’t ask…. Winning bidder is the winner! The bike comes with: Binder with all pertinent paperwork Owners manual is a re-pop Original tool kit
