Vehicle Detail
1965 Ford MustangLOW RESERVE!! Up for auction is a nice little 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe. This car has an older "restoration" (semi-restoration) that was done in the mid 1990s and it is starting to show it's age. The car runs and drives well and turns heads everywhere it goes. Everyone just loves these first generation Mustangs. The car is not perfect, by any means, but is still very presentable as it is. A little bit of history on the car... I purchased this car locally about 2 years ago for my wife. It was parked in 2005-06 because it needed a new starter solenoid and battery. The previous owner planned to fix it but never got around to it, so it was parked in his garage for the next 7-8 years, and did not move. When I bought the car, the first thing I did was drain all of the fluids and checked everything out. I replaced the fuel tank, sending unit, and fuel lines since the old fuel turned to varnish. Surprisingly, the carburetor was pretty clean but I still took it apart and cleaned it very well. With new fluids, filters, cap, rotor, plugs, etc., the little six cylinder engine fired right up and ran well. I just installed brand new Hankook white wall tires which gives it a nice classic look. There on less than 100 miles of them. Since I brought the car out of hibernation, I have been trying to work all of the bugs out of it. Most things were minor electrical things. I replaced the turn signal cancelation cam switch, dimmer switch, headlight switch, brake/stop light switch, bulbs, headlights... all of which needed replacing. The car has power steering and the lines were old and cracked causing the fluid to leak out. I replaced all four lines and that fixed the problem. The odometer shows 50,563 miles but I sure that it has rolled over and is not accurate. Paint/Body/Interior: The car was painted in the mid 1990s. During that time, the lower quarter panels were replaced as well and the floor pans from what I can tell. The paint and body work is "average" at best. There are minor dings, chips, and scratches throughout, which is to be expected from an average 20+ year old paint job. A simple polish would do wonders for the car. The lower fenders, doors, and quarters are showing signs of bubbles but it is not major rust issues. You can see this in the additional pictures. It is presentable enough as it is for a "driver" quality car but if you you wanted it to be a show car, you would want to rework the paint and body. The chrome and stainless trim are also in "driver" quality condition and would need to be restored/replaced if you wanted a show car. I installed brand new factory correct emblems on the fenders and hood since they were missing when I bought the car. The frame rails and floor pans all look to be very solid. There is a small rust hole on the driver side inner fender right behind the radiator support, which can be seen in the photos/video. It is not in a critical area and does not affect the structure of the car. The interior looks clean as it is. The front seats were recovered and the rear seat looks to have been dyed during that time. The carpet and headliner looks to have been replaced when the car was painted. The dash has the original cluster and trim. The gauge lights work as well as the courtesy door light that is mounted under the dash. The car does not have seat belts but I do not know if they were required when the car was new in 1965. The radio antenna is missing and the aftermarket radio is not hooked up, so I am not sure if it works. Mechanicals: The car has a 200ci inline six cylinder with an automatic transmission. I do not know if the engine is the original numbers matching though. I know the transmission isn't the original and is from around a '71 model. I figured that out when replacing the transmission filter, which is different than a '65 transmission. The engine runs well and I do not hear any knocks or rattles and it does not leak or burn oil. The transmission shifts though the gears as it should. There is a very minor leak that I believe may be coming from around the dip stick tube. I changed the fluid, filter and pan gasket. The car has single exhaust that sounds fine and I'm sure was replaced when the car was freshened up. The car runs, drives down the road, and stops fine. I have not taken the car on a long distance trip so I can not guaranty that you could fly in and drive it back home across the country. I've driven it around town, here and there, and have not had any issues so it is completely up to the new owner if they want to risk driving it back home. It's a 50 year old car and anything could happen, so you should take that into consideration. The car is located in Jackson, Mississippi and I have a clear Mississippi title in hand. WALK AROUND VIDEO VIDEO CRANKING ENGINE AND WALKING AROUND VIDEO DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD On Nov-15-15 at 13:49:16 PST, seller added the following information: I received a couple questions about the engine... and with me not being a Ford guy, I was only going off what I was told when I bought the car. So I looked into identifying the engine. It turns out that the engine is actually what I believe to be a 250ci. It has the five freeze plugs on the right side as well as the 4-bolt water pump. From what I read, the 200ci would have only had a 3-bolt water pump. Also, the air cleaner appears to be one from a 67-68 6-cyl. Mustang. With the transmission also being from a later model, it wouldn't surprise me if both were replaced from the same donor car, but without an engine I.D. tag, it's hard to say. I hope this answers some of the questions. Thank you again for your interest.
