This super nice, unmolested Series 62 four-door hardtop from California whisks you around town or down the highway while reminding you what understated elegance used to mean in America. No show car, and it could use a few odds and ends, but nothing prevents you from driving and enjoying the car right away. I HAVE PERSONALLY DRIVEN THIS CAR OVER 350 MILES WITHIN THE PAST TWO MONTHS, AND IT HAS PERFORMED BEAUTIFULLY, IN TOWN, ON COUNTRY ROADS, AND ON HIGH-SPEED INTERSTATES. Mechanical Condition The car starts dependably, runs and stops as it should, steers crisply and tracks nicely, and has plenty of power. The brake lights and turn signals work as they should. The exhaust sounds normal. The generator does what generators do, and was recently rebuilt. The tires are in decent condition, and one tire was recently replaced. The suspension feels typical of a big American car -- floaty and cushy.The carburetor could stand to be adjusted -- too fast an idle when warming up -- but it works nicely after warming up. The horn needs a new relay and may have a short in the steering column. The windshield wipers do not work. Not surprisingly, the clock does not work. There is a (not uncommon) valve cover leak on one corner which is easily remedied with a new gasket. The transmission is one of the nicer features of this car. It shifts nicer than any other Hydra-Matic I have ever driven and complements nicely the snappy performance of the Cadillac 390 V8! Three of the four windows go up and down more or less as they should, but one back window needs a bit of manual help to go up and down. If justice were to be done, both rear windows (which travel a curved, somewhat awkward path) should be removed and reconditioned in order to work as they were originally supposed to. The non-glare padded dark gray dash has two easily repairable cracks; considering the beating California sun, it is in remarkable condition for its age and presents zero glare. Cosmetic ConditionOne of the nicest features of this car is the heat-deflecting color scheme -- pearl gray cloth and vinyl seat upholstery and gray/silver trim inside a silver body with white roof -- and the comfortable, inviting nature of the interior. (What a welcome change from the usual hot black interiors one sees all the time in today’s cars!) Together with the clean, clear vista of the hardtop design, which provides unobstructed views on the sides while shading all passengers from the hot midday sun, traveling in this car is comfortable even under the hot California sun. Unlike the case in the more fashionable six-window sedans, the rear-seat passengers don't get fried through the back window!With the exception of the white roof paint, the Nevada silver paint of the body is somewhat tired and contains numerous chips, scratches, and blemishes, while the silver paint of the horizontal surfaces (trunk lid and hood) is splotchy. A previous owner sprayed blue paint on the trunk lid, perhaps to cover the flayed areas, and there are some areas of minor bubbling, although no apparent areas of collision damage and no deep scratches or imperfections. Despite these imperfections, this is a California car that originally had black plates, and, as you would expect, there are no rust holes in any of the floors, doors, or fenders. (As a native of Pennsylvania, I find myself drooling over solid, rust-free bodies like this.) In spite of itself the silver paint polishes to a warm glow and complements the clean, light interior. Exterior chrome is in serviceable condition. Stainless is in good condition with some scratches but no major dents. The glass is original and shows normal wear and, in the case of the window glass, some yellowing at the edges, while the windshield and backlight look almost new. The interior chrome, stainless, and aluminum trim are in fair though quite presentable condition, with the usual chrome pitting. Seat upholstery is in very good condition with minor wear -- a single minor tear is visible on the driver's seat, easily reparable. The carpet, which is probably original, is in good condition with the exception of the rather frayed area under the driver's seat. Overall, one finds the car as inviting and comfortable as a trusty rocking chair or recliner. The trunk lining is original and quite worn, but the metal is solid underneath.FeaturesThe car comes equipped with basic Cadillac power features – power brakes, power steering, power windows, and dual-range Hydra-Matic -- plus a Wonderbar radio with both auto select and pre-set buttons, which appears to have been rebuilt recently. Raise the electric antenna and the sound comes in loud and clear! Should one of the few remaining smokers out there find himself a passenger in this car, he will feel welcome indeed: no less than four separate lighters and as many ashtrays are conveniently located within easy reach of any seat.
