Vehicle Detail
I purchased this Touareg in April 2011 on Ebay with 54,000 miles on it. I loved this Touareg. So much so, that my new car is the Audi Q5, which is built on the exact same platform as the Touareg, only with an Audi label slapped on it. I prefer the interior of the Touareg over the Audi. I started life as a mechanical engineer and have spent my entire life working in the automotive world. I've had the luxury of driving some super cool cars and I've spent lots of time on the race track. I am a car geek. And as such, buying a car is a much bigger deal to me than it is to the common person. Meaning, I research my car purchases to nauseating levels before making a purchase. Before I purchased the Touareg, I test drove a bunch of SUVs. As soon I drove this Touareg, it was a done deal. I was sold. There really is no SUV on the planet that is as awesome as the Touareg/Porsche Cayenne/Audi Q5 platform. The Touareg is built on the same platform as the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q5. In fact, a lot of the parts are interchangeable. This is truly a real SUV. Most SUVs are just UVs - Utility Vehicles. This is a Sport Utility Vehicle. If you're new to the Touareg and considering some other SUVs as well, the Touareg is built on the exact same platform as the Porche Cayenne. You can really tell when driving it compared to other SUVs. They just don't compare to the way this thing handles and rides down the highway at 70 MPH. It is a 5000lb German tank on a Porsche frame. In the 4-1/2 years since I've owned the Touareg, I haven't put many miles on it, especially in the past two years. I've put less than 3000 miles on it this year and less than 7000 miles total since the last emissions inspection in April, 2014. In short, I don't drive much. It's spent all of it's life in my heated garage to protect it from the typical hardships of city life that urban cars face. I recently had the bumper covers repainted to restore them to new condition as well as full buff by a real body shop, not the flunky's at the corner car wash. I've always used synthetic oil in it. You know when you're at Jiffy lube and they are putting the hard sell on you to upgrade to the full synthetic oil? Well, I'm guy that says YES! As this is a used vehicle and as such, it's not perfect. There some small dings and scratches on the passenger side rear, however you can't even seem them in the photos. From 6 inches away they are noticeable. The driver's side airbag light recently came on, however via the Touareg forums (a priceless resource for these cars) it's a common problem on these and an easy fix. There is also a small crack in the bezel around the Pioneer receiver, however it is barely noticeable. There is also a range warning at startup with one of the headlights, however I've never noticed what this is and the service advisor at the dealership couldn't explain it to me what this means in plain English (and I'm an engineer!), so I let it be. I've addressed most of expensive maintenance items on this Touareg, such as the drive shaft. The drive shaft on the Touareg is a complicated assembly that gives it the silk smooth drivability of an all wheel drive SUV. The downside is needs to be replaced around 75k miles and it's an $1800 dealer repair. Yes, that's not a typo it is an $1800 driveshaft. Fortunately I've taken care of this for you and recently had it replaced. Another common problem is the wheel center caps with the VW logo on them tend to come apart after 75k miles. They are $48/each at the dealership. I bought a set of four and replaced one of them, I'm including the other three brand new caps with the Touareg. If you check the AutoCheck report, you'll see there was an accident reported on it before I purchased it. Being the anal engineer that I am, I purchased a copy of the accident report and and inspected the damage. Calling it an accident was a huge stretch. There was almost no damage to the Touareg, the bumper cover was scratched and one of the grille inserts in the bumper was cracked. This probably wasn't noticeable to 99% of people, including the previous owners. However being a car geek, it bothered me, so I had the bumper cover buffed out and replaced the grille insert to restore it back to 100% new. Another original shortcoming of the Touareg is the factory sound system. The speakers and amp are great, however the factory radio leaves a lot to be desired. Actually, a ton to be desired. Fortunately I've also addressed this for you. I had a Pioneer head unit installed along with the XM receiver module integrated behind the dash (ready for you to activate - I transferred the XM subscription over to my new car). This is no tacky XM radio add on with a bunch of wires an antennas running all over the interior. It also plays music from SD cards and has an input to connect to the headphone jack on your phone. The XM radio in the Touareg sounds WAY better than the factory Sirius in my Audi. There really is no comparison. It sounds that good compared to the Sirius systems. Being a 2006 model, this didn't come with hands free Bluetooth. Again this is addressed and it has fully integrated Bluetooth into the Pioneer receiver. Both Iphones and Andriod phones will auto pair with the Pioneer receiver and they will hand off calls automatically. For example, if you're talking on the phone and jump into the Touareg, it will automatically switch your call from the handset to bluetooth as soon as you put the key in the ignition. Likewise, when you get out of the Touareg, it will auto transfer the call back to your headset without hanging up. How cool is that? The Pioneer head unit, XM module and Bluetooth module along with the installation cost me almost $1000 when I had this done. Most of the Touareg's you'll find of this vintage will have stone age entertainment system in them. And you'll be looking at spending a small fortune to upgrade it and make everything work with the factory amps. $500 deposit due by Paypal within 24 hours of auction close.
