Vehicle Detail

I am offering for auction a 1-owner 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser. The vehicle has been very well kept and it shows. The exterior shines and looks very sharp and the leather interior was extremely well cared for by a clean non-smoking family with no pets. Overall exterior and interior condition are far above average for a 15 year old vehicle from the northeast, it really looks great. All services were performed at the Toyota dealership using Genuine Toyota parts since new. Michelin LTX MS tires were replaced less than 15,000 miles ago and have 10-11 3/32" of tread remaining. The front brakes were replaced and the front wheel bearings cleaned and re-packed less than 15,000 miles ago. The timing belt and water pump were replaced 50,000 miles ago. SO...here is the story. We have friends who are the original owners of the Land Cruiser who truly love the vehicle. A few weeks ago, a noise developed from under the truck and they had difficultly backing out of the garage as though it was stuck. It was towed to their mechanic who checked it out and determined the noise was coming from the area of the transfer case and transmission. He couldn't be 100% positive there wasn't a transmission issue, but he drained the transfer case and metal chips came out with the fluid. Over the past year, the A/C evaporator core failed and it was replaced with a brand new Toyota unit, the rear sway bar links were replaced with brand new Toyota parts, the evap purge valve was replaced for a check engine light and it too is a genuine Toyota part. They decided they weren't going to invest more money into their beloved Land Cruiser and decided to look for a new vehicle. I have mechanical experience and know my way around cars really well. Knowing this, our friends graciously offered to sell it to us. Although I am a Toyota guy through and through, I initially decided I wasn't interested. I don't really need another vehicle. Here is the part where this auction becomes unique. You'll notice the time of year we are in, summer is winding down and kids are heading back to school. My wife and I send our kids to a Catholic school in a community not too far from where we live. The school is in an economically challenged area, enrollment is down and they appear to be struggling financially. I thought long and hard about this idea and discussed it with my wife and we decided we would take up our friend's offer and buy their Land Cruiser. The idea was to put a used transfer case in it, cross my fingers on the transmission, sell it and donate the profits to the school. Our friends thought it was a great idea so the deal was done. Well a few days go by and I realize I may have gotten ahead of myself. My wife lovingly reminded me I still haven't stacked the firewood, the deck rails need replacement, we have small children, I work long hours, promised the kids I would install a drop ceiling in the basement.. the list goes on and on and on. The reality is I don't have the sufficient time or space to tackle this project, so we are going to try Ebay.. If we make a profit, it still goes to the school, if not- lesson learned. I am going to do my best to describe the condition and issues that I see and know of on the Land Cruiser. As I said before, I would rate this as above average condition (except for the obvious drivetrain noise issue) for a vehicle from the Northeast. Exterior: The paint is really nice, there are a few scratches and dings here and there but nothing that really jumps out, it is really nice looking. There is a small area of rust at the very bottom of each of the front fenders near the front doors- They are not really noticeable unless you are looking for them and really don't need attention any time soon. The right side fog lamp has moisture/condensation inside of it. Interior: The power door lock for the driver's door does not work, most of the time this is caused by a power door lock actuator that is worn out. The "D" indicator on the gauge cluster doesn't light up when in DRIVE position- probably a burnt bulb. All gauges, instruments and electronics including climate control and CD player, seat heaters, power seat adjustment, sunroof and lights operate as they should. The air conditioner blows nice and cold, works awesome. The interior is in really nice shape. There are no tears or stains or rips or smells or food or anything like that. The only noticeable wear is on the seat cushion covers, especially towards the front edges, I tried to capture this in the photos. Mechanically: MOST URGENT : It appears the transfer case needs to be replaced and then the truck need to be test driven to make sure there is nothing else going on with the transmission- there are several used units out there found easily on the internet. While it still drives and goes forward and backward, there is noise and the vehicle really shouldn't be driven until this is replaced. The engine starts normally, runs strong, no smoke, no leaks no abnormal noises or smells, no Check Engine light or any other malfunction indicators illuminate. Undercarriage: I jacked the truck up briefly to look at the underside. It does have surface rust, typical of a vehicle from this area. I found 2 spots on the frame that I would keep a close watch on as they are getting rusty. I would probably paint with POR 15 or another rust preventative paint or plan on having a small patch welded on. I photographed these areas as well and I really don't think this is urgent. The areas I mention are very easily accessible. They are on the outboard side of the frame rails around the area near the front doors where the frame straightens out from turning down from the engine bay. Most of the frame is in really nice shape. The fuel tank protector is getting pretty rusty but that should not be a big deal to replace if you should choose to in the future. The last thing to mention is one of the brake lines (front to rear) is looking like it should be replaced soon as it too is getting pretty rusty. There is no way to know how long it will last but if I were to put the Cruiser on the road for myself, I would probably replace it sooner than later. I know there are a lot of miles on this Land Cruiser. I can assure you this is a VERY well maintained vehicle. Those "In the Know" about these Land Cruisers know they are a breed all their own and go a long, long time. I believe there is still a lot of life left in this SUV and with a bit of work this could be driven daily again in a short time. Please Email me if you have any questions before bidding. Check my feedback rating and rest assured I have mentioned everything I noticed while looking it over. The vehicle is offered for local pick up only unless the winning bidder wants to arrange shipping. Because of the drivetrain issue, It cannot be driven and will require flat bedding out.
