The son (who drove it all through high school) got ownership in the late 1980s and over the next few years did a restoration including new floors, new trunk, new carpets, new top, rebuilt the engine, etc. (receipts included). Now, 25 years later, it isn’t getting driven much and this one-family owned Tempest convertible is being sold to help finance his daughter’s college education. MARQUE HISTORY: For 1966 the Tempest models were completely restyled with smoother bodies, rounder contours, wider wheel openings, recessed split grilles, and stacked headlamps. There were four Tempest models available, Standard, Custom, LeMans, and GTO. The Tempest Custom was the base car needed to get a convertible and this one was optioned with the 326CI V8, a 2-Speed Powerglide, Power Steering, and Power Brakes. The Tempest Custom Convertible had a factory price of $2,655 and there were only 5,557 produced. Wear and seam splits on rear driver’s seat bottom. Carpets X Replaced in early 1990s with some staining. Door Panels X Aftermarket door speakers installed. Kick Panels X Dash X X Cracked above ash tray. Faded black and silver paint. Lights X X Courtesy lamp OK, some instrument lighting not working. Instruments X Clock not working. Horn X Radio X Aftermarket JVC AM/FM/Cassette. EXTERIOR E G F P Comments: Paint X Repainted in 1989. Nice and shiny with a few chips and scratches. Slight 2 foot long scratch on left quarter. Some pitting on chrome headlight surrounds. Convertible Top X Replaced in 1987. New hydraulic pump. One small tear. Floors X Very solid, some rust on factory weld seams. Sills X Tires X Relatively new (2012) with good tread. Wheels X Aftermarket Cragar SS chrome wheels. Pits and faded chrome evident. Nice and shiny from 10 feet. Glass X A couple of small chips in passenger door window upper edge. Tonneau X X Couple of the molding clips are torn off and missing. UNDERHOOD E G F P Comments: Fluids X All fluids up to spec. Belts X Recently installed belts. Hoses/Lines X Recently installed radiator and heater hoses. Cooling System X Normal temps. Charging System X Appearance X X Original engine bay with some dirt and corrosion. MECHANICAL/ ELECTRICAL E G F P Comments: Engine X The 326 V8 starts easily and runs strong. Transmission X Shifts well and works properly. Electrical X Starter and alternator working well. Brakes X The drum brakes stop well. Steering X New center steering link. Wipers X Wipers and washers inop. Lights X All lights operate. Manifolds X X Exhaust leak from left side exhaust manifold. UNDER E G F P Comments: Leaks X X Leaks at transmission selector shaft and steering box. Rust X Underside very solid. A few rust through holes in the rear frame members. Nothing serious.
