RE-LISTING AT A LOWER STARTING/BUY IT NOW PRICE DUE TO UNEXPECTED POSSIBLE TURBO FAILURE. I APOLOGIZE TO THE PARTIES WHO BID/WATCHED THE CAR WHEN IT WAS PREVIOUSLY LISTED. CAR SEEMS TO HAVE LOST BOOST PRESSURE ON THE WAY HOME FROM WORK TODAY (SEE BELOW) WHICH CAUSED IT TO GO INTO LIMP MODE (I THINK). I AM SELLING AS A MECHANICS SPECIAL/PROJECT AS I DO NOT HAVE TIME/MONEY TO FIX. MY LOSS IS YOUR GAIN! THIS IS STILL A NICE CAR!I purchased this Jetta from a friend approximately one year ago. At the time, the car was not running properly and needed some maintenance. After the car was in my possession, I commenced to fixing all of the issues that this particular generation (MK5) is well known for. I am a former auto/diesel technician and performed all of the work myself. I have receipts and photos for all parts installed. If you are considering the purchase of a TDI after the year 2005 with the BRM engine code and DSG Auto transmission, I would sincerely recommend verifying the maintenance history for the following items. These are some of the most common issues that I have ran into while owning TDI's: -Camshaft, Lifters, Bearings, and hardware (Premature Camshaft/Lifter wear is very common due to high unit injector opening pressures and using incorrect specified engine oil) -DSG flywheel (DSG flywheels are prone to failure and very common. Sounds are comparative to nuts/bolts rattling in a tin can. Will break apart and can damage transmission if not replaced) -DSG Transmission (VW's DSG Automatic transmission is quite a piece of German engineering at its best. It is built off of the 6 speed manual platform but instead of using the drivers left foot to engage/disengage the clutch, it uses a handful of solenoids and a mechatronics unit. It is well known for its hesitation when driving from a dead stop and its hard downshifts from 3-2-1 gears. Some say that the Mechatronics unit is to blame, others say thats just the way it was built.) -Timing Belt (A broken timing belt in a TDI engine can/will destroy the valves, cylinder head, pistons, etc..Very expensive repair bill) -Turbocharger (VW employs what is called a Variable Vane Turbo. The vanes adjust under specified load/throttle to help smooth out boost pressures while driving at certain speeds. Sometimes the vanes stick and cause boost pressures to spike which in turn, causes a rush of boost pressure all at once and not gradually. -EGR Cooler Diverter Valve (The bushing that the diverter valve shaft rides on will wear over time causing exhaust gases to leak past and into the atmosphere. Not a terrible life threatening problem but it does make quite and annoying hissing sound in the lower RPM range.) -Saggy Headliner I have addressed a few of these issues, albeit the hardest and most expensive ones in my opinion. I have spent approximately $3,000 (have receipts) in parts alone, without assuming labor involved. This type of parts/labor at the VW dealership would be big $$$. I also have tons of photos documenting the repair process, and more pictures of the car itself if needed. Here is a list of issues/maintenance that I have performed since owning the vehicle. All work was performed under 500 miles ago: -VW specific 505.01 engine oil and filter. -Coolant flush to include new VW G12 coolant -New thermostat and housing. -Fuel filter, Air filter, and Cabin filter. -Timing Belt, Water pump, tensioner, and all idlers. -Accessory belt -Camshaft, lifters, bearings, and all associated hardware. -DSG Flywheel and hardware -DSG Service to include OEM VW oil and filter. -Removed, disassembled, and cleaned tandem fuel pump. -New battery. -Full brake fluid replacement with new OEM VW brake fluid -Installed new OEM VW GLI front grille and bumper inserts -Polished headlights. -Clay bar'd and waxed entire car The car starts, runs, drives, and stops. (https://youtu.be/oyEFpoAcPgc) No check engine light. No overheating, odd noises, or smells. It drives smooth and shifts through all gears well. However, as I was driving the car to work today, the car seemed to lose boost pressure and go into limp mode. The car did not make any odd noises or knocks. I was able to drive it home which was approximately 20 miles, albeit with a lot less power. It will start up and idle great but is very low on power as if the turbo has finally failed. I do not know for sure and I will leave that up to the new owner to investigate. The steering and suspension feel tight and crisp. All power windows, sunroof, and power locks work. Cruise control works The heat and A/C work great, even in 110 degree South Carolina heat. It is a southern car and has absolutely no rust whatsoever. However, the car is not perfect and still has its issues/flaws. It has its fair share of scrapes and dings but nothing major.I have tried to showcase any flaws via the pictures as best as possible. All paint and panels appear to be original VW with no evidence of damage or replacement. It also has a clean title in my possession. I am trying to be as honest as possible so there are no surprises. Please be realistic with your expectations. Regardless of how the car looks and drives, it is still a VW diesel with 185k miles and I cannot guarantee anything. I have tried my best to describe the car to the best of my knowledge and would suggest potential buyers to come look at and drive the car in person. It is NOT a new car and is pushing 10 years old. With that being said, it really is a nice ride and would make a great MPG daily driver or someone looking for a TDI project. Please see list below of the most significant problems.-Possible variable vane turbo issues/failure. The car does not seem to be building boost pressure and because of that, I believe it is running in Limp Mode. It is very low on power. -Minor hail damage. Not as noticeable in the pictures but it is there. -Typical DSG Transmission hesitation when driving from a dead stop. Somewhat hard downshifts from 3-2-1 gears. However, the transmission is fully serviced and shifts great minus those two issues. I would call it more of an annoyance than anything. -Possible variable vane turbo issues (see above). The turbo works great and produces good boost pressure, it just likes to spike a little under lower RPM loads. I have not verified this for sure and could be way off, just a somewhat educated guess. And again, more of an annoyance than anything. -Leaky EGR diverter valve (see above). This is a verified problem. It is leaking exhaust out of the bushing and makes a hissing noise under lower RPM range. I tried patching it up per some instructions on some VW forums. My patch job helped a little, but looks terrible and would recommend deleting or replacing the cooler/valve assembly. The valve/cooler does not affect the operation of the car at all. And once again, more of an annoyance than a problem. -Air Bag light on for unknown reason. -Could use an alignment as the steering wheel is slightly off center. -Tires are in good shape but will need replacing in the near future. I rotated the rears to the front and they are approximately 50% and the rears at a solid 25%. -Some curb rash and corrosion on the wheels. -Headliner is sagging in certain areas but should be an easy fix. -Wear on driver seat. -Wear on steering wheel -Wear on various buttons/knobs throughout interior -Slight rocker damage along the very bottom. It appears someone tried to use a jack in the wrong place. Not very noticeable unless you are crawling on the ground, but I know its there and think you should too. -Small dent in the trunk. -Small scrape and ding on passenger rear door. -Various chips and scrapes on front bumper. -Installed GLI grill inserts with provisions for fog lights but did not install fog lights. -Random oil leaks. It is a VW diesel with 185k, to be expected.
