Vehicle Detail

1967 BMW 1600-2 VIN# 1517644 Manufactured: March 22, 1967 Mileage: 170,2xx actual miles with service records to validate Provenance: This car is a 3-owner California “Survivor”: unmolested factory-original specification with original CA “black” plate assigned when new. It has all original books including the Golde Sunroof manual, original tools (complete with wrap), registrations back to the original owner in 1970, and 2nd owners' log book of services from 1970-2005. Service logs from me from 2005+ were kept in Excel and lost when my home was burglarized, but I have all the receipts for parts and repairs and it has been maintained above factory standards. It has won many awards including First in Class at BMW Legends of the Autobahn 2002 Class and 2nd in the Palo Alto Concours Neu-Classe BMW Class. These awards were earned because the car is extremely clean and also true to originality and preservation, not because it is flawless and restored (it’s not). It is a regular at the San Francisco ’02 Swap and Show and has been on several vintage BMW rallies/club drives up to 200 miles per outing with no breakdowns. I have been involved with early ‘02’s for over 15 years and this is likely the nicest early (pre-68) original ’02 in existence anywhere in the world. It is more correct than the 1967 1600 on display in the BMW Museum in Munich (I’ve seen it in person and it is restored fully but missing some of the correct early parts) and a true piece of BMW history. I’ve spent years collecting all the rarest parts in NOS form to replace the worn or missing originals. The 2nd owner acquired it in 1970 from the original purchaser in Los Altos, Ca. He named it “Harold” kept it next door in Palo Alto, CA for 35 years(!!) before selling it to me in 2005 where it has remained with me in the SF Bay Area since. He maintained it to the highest standards mechanically and left me a detailed log book of all his work along with a stack of receipts of which I have added to over the years. However it was his daily driver and family hauler for many years thus it acquired a lot of “patina” in the bodywork, but never an accident or paintwork. I’ve been its caretaker and restorer for 10 years but the time has come to pass it on to a new caretaker. This is a very early ’02. It is the 7,644th to roll off the assembly line for the 1967MY (151001 is first ever VIN for 1967 models). Only about 2200 were shipped to the USA in 1967 and sold directly by Hoffman Imports, as the BMW dealer network did not roll out in the US until 1968. Very few 1967’s survive today, especially the early 6V cars from the first half of 1967 production as late 67’s came with 12V. It is an original California car, first titled in Los Altos (Bay Area) and I bought it from the second owner (1970-2005). I have the original manuals, registrations back to 1970, 2nd owners’ 35-year log book of repairs and fastidious maintenance, and a thick stack of receipts going back to the 1970’s! This 1600-2 has NEVER been in an accident and wears ALL ORIGINAL bodywork w/48-year-old ‘Florida’ green paint over ‘Dark Brown’ interior. Everything on this car is original or refurbished to original specifications with NOS or original materials. It has 170,xxx original miles on the “numbers-matching” block, with a rebuilt correct 1.6L “118” head. The 6-volt system is fully intact and operational, including a rare “optional” 6-volt tachometer (a clock was standard). Dark brown German wool “Square Weave” carpet kit redone in original style which was used only in ’67 models and dropped because of the high material cost. Original “Dark Brown” vinyl seats in very nice condition with driver’s seat re-stuffed. NOTE: In the 161 picture gallery on Photobucket I have made many notes on the pictures themselves. There are also 2 videos of a cold startup (after sitting 3 weeks, pushed out of my garage to start for photo lighting purposes) and of a subsequent drive through my neighborhood up to 40mph. *sorry for the sideways video if you use Windows Media Player it can't auto rotate iPhone vids I guess http://s1274.photobucket.com/user/bmw_jeff/library/BMW1600-2 Many things were different on the first batch of ’02 cars, unique to 1967 and some early 1968 models (those built in late 1967). This makes this car much more difficult to restore properly. Below is a list of most of them, all present on this car, which is extremely hard to find: Exterior: 10-slat Center Grille (’67 only), all other years have 8 slats (4 per side) Polished Windshield Wipers (to early ’69) Small bumper overriders (front), none in rear (‘67 only) Flush Euro turn signals and no reflectors on fenders (up to early ’69) Smaller and thicker rear-panel Roundel and 1600 Script, mounted above lights (to early ’68) License Plate Holder, Anodized/polished and adjustable for Euro or US plates (’67 only) License Plate Lights in bumper (’67 only) Different nose panel with “split” tube for air intake attachment (‘67 only) Lightweight steel body vs. other 02’s via thinner gauge steel (‘67 only) Unique door latch assemblies (‘67 only) Factory triangle cutouts in trunk wall for roll cage; anticipating racing applications (’67 only) Interior: Dark Brown interior, all later years changed to lighter “Tobacco” color (’67-68) Euro dash with “plastic-chrome” trim belt and all-silver gauge pod (‘67 only) All-vinyl center console and padded underdash panels, no plastic or fiberboard parts (’67 only) Unique shiny black steering wheel w/ chrome horn bar (’67 only) Unique E-brake rubber cover and unique dash section over instruments (smaller, ’67 only) Unique Window Cranks and door handles with more chrome than later cars (cranks:’67 only) Engine Bay: Complete 6volt system (early 67’s only to May ‘67 production), unique air-intake, Unique to 67 small VDO bottle, Single-line brake system with unique booster (’67 only), Unique exhaust header with no smog equipment from factory (‘67 only). Early rear muffler (to ’69). General Condition and other notes: **NOS=New Old Stock ie original BMW vintage parts BODY: This is a true survivor NOT a restored car; it has many small blemishes especially on the doors (parking dings) and rear panel/trunk lid (small dents and touched up chips etc). Trunk has a couple small “inside-out” dents as well from prior owners shutting it on luggage. The front fenders and hood are in the best shape, only a couple of small dings and of course rock chips on the frontal areas from 48 years of motoring with original paint. Minor small dents, dings, and chips in paint (touched up) on most panels could be referred to as “patina”. No one would advocate re-painting the car to fix this minor damage as the paint is only original once and looks good from a couple feet. No evidence of any accidents, all seams and gaps are even and matching. All body lines sit perfectly as from the factory. Doors shut easily and sit flush and aligned. Hood opens easily on hinges, pops into place without effort. Paint is original from factory, no re-sprays. Paint is still in nice shape with some fading around the car, and wear down to the primer in a few areas of the sunroof panel only. See section below about surface rust. All glass is original and very clean and clear. All rubber seals are new or in good condition and not deteriorated. Door seals are original but still work well and there are no wind noise or water-sealing issues with them. Exterior chrome trim is new or in great shape. Rear bumper and correct early bumperette’s were repaired for dents and re-chromed in 2014. Some of the chrome window trim shows minor scratches but no dents. Wheels appear like new, no dents or scratches. Chrome hubcaps are reproductions from BMW but have a set of extremely rare (impossible to find now) and correct NOS “beauty rings” that were optional and very fragile. All headlights/taillights/signals are in great condition. INTERIOR: Interior has been beautifully refurbished in original specification. Correct for ‘67 German square-weave carpet is new. Headliner is new from BMW. All three sections of vinyl dash in perfect condition, no cracks, scuffs, or fading. Vinyl door panels are near perfect, aside from worn chrome/mylar tape on decorative trim and a couple small scuffs on the driver panel near the bottom edge. Gauge pod restored like new. All lights and instruments work as new. Added period-correct Klippan 3-point seatbelts in front at factory mounting points (came with lap belts only originally). Trunk is exceptional for this type of car, very clean and neat including nice spare whitewall tire and unused original wheel stamped/dated 1/67 matching the other 4 original wheels. Trunk vinyl is original and in great condition, with only 2 small tear marks sized like a pencil eraser. MECHANICAL and ELECTRICAL: Car starts and runs perfectly other than it likes to run a bit rich and prefers to idle at 1000RPM to run smooth at idle. Original SOLEX carb and fuel pump have been rebuilt. NO smoke at startup or when running and no using of oil, the prior owner changed the oil every 3k and the original block is certainly tired an old but does not smoke at all. Engine has 170,200 original miles on its matching-numbers block. Engine “head” has been replaced by a factory refurbished correct “118” head prior to me acquiring the car. All hoses are new or in good condition. Newer correct “braided” gas lines. Transmission is original, shifts without grinding in any gear and works as new. Transmission has slight leak from input shaft seal, barely noticeable. Suspension is in good condition with new Bilstein HD struts installed in 2006. Front brakes have newer rotors/pads and professionally rebuilt original calipers from 2002AD. I refurbished the rear drums with BMW parts incl the cylinders in 2006. Brakes work well and car does not pull when braking and they are quiet. The drums can be grabby when dead cold, typical of these models. Cooling system is like new with re-cored original radiator and replacement waterpump and thermostat a few years ago (<10k miles). Runs normal temp even idling or driving up grades etc, never overheats. Suspension was almost totally re-done. New Bilstien HD struts in 2005 (15k miles). All bushings and joints in the front end were replaced incl. new tie rods and motor mounts around 2009. Steers and rides like new. I added a 6V electric inline fuel pump next to the gas tank (hidden) and toggle switch hidden behind the console. This allows you to prime the carb when fuel has seeped back down the line from the car sitting for weeks at a time. It does not affect driving and is only on with the ignition OFF. NEW tires last year (about 500 miles on them) are correct size and pattern 165R13’s from Vredistein Classic. Original 6-volt electrical system is fully intact with all components and lights functioning as new. Newer 6 volt battery and rebuilt 6 volt starter motor and rebuilt generator. All lights exterior and interior work correctly. Blinkers blink slowly but this is typical of 6V cars. The wiper motor works. The fresh-air fan comes on but turns very slowly (worn original fan motor) and doesn’t move much air at all unless car is in motion. Heater works great and gets very hot. Headlights and high beams work well, there is a NOS headlight controller recently installed. Spare 6V bulb assortment will be included in sale. Correct NOS 1960’s Bosch “blue” coil added in 2008 or so, original style black coil included with sale as well. Mechanical flaws: I’m trying to paint a complete picture of the car here and it may seem like a lot of stuff but overall the car is in nice shape, reliable, safe, and fun to drive. It can cruise on the highway at 70 with no problem, albeit at 4000+ RPM with the 4.10 rear gears! Of course I welcome any personal inspection of the car or PPI’s. Minor oil leaks are barely seeping oil pan gasket, seeping rear main seal, and seeping differential seals. These are all very minor seepage with minimal drips on ground (usually from the diff) when parked but they are original 48yr old seals. No other oil leaks, all other front/top/dizzy engine seals have been renewed during my ownership. The passenger side rear half-shaft boot has recently torn and needs to be replaced. (2) Two spare NOS early 1600 boots will be included in sale (hard to find). Driver side boot replaced a few years ago and still good. Boots hold standard 175W gear oil easily available. The clutch throw-out bearing starts rattling randomly when car gets hot (expansion of metals in the bearing??). It was replaced around 65k miles ago (with clutch) by prior owner and is getting worn evidently. Clutch itself works great with no slippage or change in operation and car drives fine. I am including a rare NOS clutch, NOS throw-out bearing, and NOS pressure plate in the sale for when it comes time to replace the clutch and bearing (worth about $500 if you can find a set). Shifter vibrates a lot in your hand when driving due to worn shift bushings and linkage (original 48yr old). Function is fine and it goes into gears easily without grinding, unless it’s really dead cold and you don’t finesse it then 2nd can grind occasionally but this is not normal, typically there is no grinding gears from tranny. I have a complete shift linkage renewal set of BMW parts I bought from 2002AD for early 1600’s that will be included in sale (over $150 for the kit). This is a job that’s easiest to do when the clutch is being replaced which is why I’m still sitting on the parts I have never needed to do the clutch or transmission. The speedo needle bounces a bit when driving up to 30MPH (See videos, worn needle gear?) but generally displays accurate speed and the ODO gears work perfectly. Correct 6V optional Tach reads 100-500 RPM lower than actual RPM depending on rev point (bad capacitor likely), with greatest error at idle and less at speed. Temp gauge reads about 20% higher than actual coolant temp as measured at the engine compartment. This is likely due to the fact you can no longer get a 6V coolant temp sensor and the 12V part that is in the car (new from BMW) is not calibrated to work with the 6V gauge. I have tried for years to find a NOS 6V sensor to no avail. **Coolant temp is perfect 165F+/- or so at water inlet with no overheating in any conditions, idle in traffic or at speed. Gas gauge works very accurately with no issues. I found a set of nice condition correct ’67 visors that are all-white (only 1967 cars) to replace the badly worn originals but the downside is that the swivel mechanism is loose so they fall down a bit too far. I tightened them fully so now they stay up and don’t sag, but can’t come down. This can be adjusted with a screwdriver if desired, with my height they fall into my vision if loosened to default position so I keep them tight and upright at the ceiling. Driver’s side triangle wing window crank gear is broken, it will not open (fully shut now). NOTE: I did replace the driver’s door main window crank with a brand new part recently and it rolls up and down like new. Pass side main window crank also replaced 10yrs ago still works well. Sunroof interior vinyl’d cover will not fit when sunroof is fully closed. It will clip in place fully once sunroof is cracked open a couple inches, but binds when you shut sunroof. Adjustment issue with sunroof panel I have not had time to fix so I just leave the inner cover back 1” from the closed position. Sunroof panel operates normally, only the interior covering is affected. Surface rust (there is no structural rust on the car): The car is certainly not “100% rust free” but there are only a couple of minor problem areas. This is a lifelong California car and always stored inland from the coast. All of the typical rust areas on 02’s are rust free on this car such as wheel wells, shock towers, doors, fenders, lower pans, seams of the hood and trunk, firewall and cowling below the wipers. No rust to be found in these places, only as described below. On lower front lip driver side, battery tray area, and driver side inner fender (below brake booster and battery) all from leaking battery acid and brake fluid years ago before I purchased car (pre-2005). The corner of the front lip has rust bubbles under the paint on the outside surface as well. I scuffed these areas as best I could reach and applied POR15 rust inhibitor over the areas of surface rust. I planned to repaint the engine compartment on this side when the engine needed rebuilding but so far it has not needed to come out of the car. Car has been dry-stored indoors since POR15 treatment in dry climate and never driven in wet weather to keep rust from spreading. Spare tire hole had a small rusting spot slightly larger than a quarter from the rear window seal leaking long ago. It is not rusted through or “soft” on the other side, metal is still solid. Applied POR15 over it as seen in photos to neutralize. Sunroof sliding panel. Evidently due to the thinner application of paint on the sunroof there is surface rust spots on the inside under the glue that held the original upholstery padding. Same along the edges of the panel where the water trapped in the seal must have worked its way in. When I had the headliner done there was zero surface rust on the roof itself, only on the sunroof panel for some reason. Note that also the sunroof panel is the only part of the car showing signs of thinning/oxidation where it has started to wear into the first layer of primer in spots. In summary this is one of the rarest, if not the rarest, surviving BMW's from the 1600-2002 era. It is almost certainly the finest unrestored pre-1968 1600/2002 in the world. There are only a handful listed in the 2002 Registry and many of the surviving 66/67 1600's are rusted/off the road or converted race cars (1967 is a cutoff for vintage racing classes so it's a popular year to convert). You are bidding on a key piece of BMW history, a rare survivor car that has been sympathetically restored by a BMW fanatic to stock condition and preserved. As I have stated several times in this description the car is NOT RESTORED and NOT PERFECT. It is a solid, un-hit, still driving survivor that is beautiful for what it is. It is more than welcome at any classic car event and certainly in a Preservation Class it can win awards (see pics). CAR IS SOLD AS-IS with no warranty expressed or implied. If you have specific questions about the car that are not covered here please contact me through email. I reserve the right to sell the car locally before the auction ends as it is for sale, but I do not plan on doing so unless I get a very strong offer. This is my personal vehicle, I am not a car dealer. I welcome any local inspections of the car (near San Jose, California) and I will help (my time) to get the car loaded for delivery if the buyer is not local. Price does not include any delivery fees, the buyer must arrange and pay for delivery if needed. I will provide the NOS spare parts as listed in this description at the time of the sale transaction. A deposit will be required from the winning bidder within 24 hours of the close of auction. Please contact me prior to bidding if you have eBay history of Zero Feedback transactions. I reserve the right to cancel bids by people with Zero Feedback. My eBay reputation is flawless, good luck bidding! -Jeff
