Vehicle Detail

You are bidding on a 1929 Model A Ford pickup This truck has a cab and bed that was built by the Briggs Body Company and placed on an original Model A chassis in 1929. It still has an original Briggs Body Company tag that was attached to the exterior passenger side cowl (see picture). Note: The Briggs Body Company built Fordor sedan bodies for Ford, but they also built other body types for themselves and for other manufacturers. The outside body is metal clad over a wooded frame. The inside of the bed (side and floor) is wood. There is evidence that the truck originally had a canopy top that went from the front of the cab to the back of the bed. Some wood framing has been replaced. The truck has been driven as is for years, but there is some missing cab floor wood that could be replaced to make the cab more snug inside. The truck grew up in New Jersey. The person who had owned the truck from 1963 to 2004 decided to sell it. In 2004, he listed it on Ebay. Having a love for unusual Model A pickups, I bid on it, but I was outbid. The high bidder drove to New Jersey and towed it to his home to Norfolk, Virginia. I was able to contact the new owner and we became internet and telephone friends, communicating weekly for 10 years. He joined the Cape Henry Model A Ford club and the truck was used regularly on club tours. He was one of the club photographers and I have many digital pictures of the truck at club activities. My friend passed away in 2014. I purchased the truck from his family. I intended to keep it, but I am buying a low mileage Model A sedan and unfortunately I don’t have room for two Model A’s. The truck comes with a picture scrapbook that shows its history (photos, receipts and copies of titles), dating back to the 1960’s. There is also a 1970's newspaper article (The Daily Journal) about the history of the Sweet Advertising Company founded in New Jersey in the 1920s. The article shows a 1930’s or 1940’s picture of an identical 1929 truck. The canopy truck had been converted into a sound truck, with advertising posters on both sides. It was well known in the Union County area of New Jersey. The scrapbook contains other separate black and white photos of the Sweet Advertising truck. I wonder if the truck could actually be the same Sweet Advertising truck. The truck still has the original motor, which has the same number as on the title. In 2007 the head was resurfaced, the valves were reground, and the mains and rods were adjusted. Shortly thereafter, the Tillotson carburetor was replaced with an original rebuilt Zenith carburetor. The truck has working shocks and a fairly clean undercarriage. It has a 6 volt alternator. There was quite a bit of engine work done in the 1960’s. The scrapbook has receipts for that work. The truck currently runs, but could use a tune up. There is an intermittent electrical short, involving the headlights. I've only driven the truck around the block a few times, so I don't have much history with the way it runs. The previous owner took it on many club outings. The 6 volt battery is brand new. The driver's side door glass is broken. Neither window regulators work. The windshield glass was replaced by the previous owner, but it still needs an outside weather seal The seat is not original, but it seems to fit in the location. An extra rear stop light has been added, but the socket has issues. I will include an extra socket that may work. The truck is currently registered in my name in the state of California with original 1929 commercial license plates. I plan on keeping those plates, but they are open to discussion. The yellow wheels seen in the first picture has since been painted back to original black. The sun visor in the first picture is missing. It blew off during it’s transport to Southern California. The second picture is how the truck looks currently. The previous owner was slowly repainting sections of the truck (see the green hood and the green tailgate). The spare tire holder on the back of the cab is made out of plywood. The previous owner did not want a wheel well fender because they tend to keep the door from opening all the way. All 5 tires are Firestones, with good tread. I have added 2 pictures of a 1929 Martin Parry blue canopy pickup so you can get an idea of what the original canopy top might have looked like. Please notice that in the second Martin Parry blue picture, that the lower section behind the cab is exposed wood. The behind the cab area of the Briggs body is similar (upper metal and lower wood). There is one picture that shows extra body parts that go with the truck. There are 2 rectangular pieces that fit on the side of the cab, behind the doors. There are also 2 'L' brackets that probably fit at the upper back section of the canopy top (see similiar brackets in the first Martin Parry picture). I have added a picture of a red Model A truck with a canopy top, parked by a river. This picture was taken from an antique car calendar. I believe that this is what my truck originally looked like. This is a unique Model A with known history. It would be a perfect truck to advertize your business. It would also be a fun vehicle to drive around town and in local parades. Please let me know if you want a picture of a specific area of the truck. The truck will be for sale locally, so this auction could end early. Your personal or agent inspection is welcome prior to the end of the auction not after. I have tried to describe the condition to the best of my ability but may have overlooked something.
