Vehicle Detail
Although registered as a 1970, the manufacture date on the car is 1969. There is little difference. An old title that came with the car indicated one owner from 1971-2013. That previous owner had obvious restoration done during that period with a paint job, new floor pans, new carpets, front bumper, running boards and other unknown work done. The engine is to clean, and peppy, not to have had some updates at some point. Five steel belted radials came with the car with little wear. It also appears all fender, and window gaskets were all replaced when painted at the restoration, but since then the door window gaskets have cracked. The headliner, dashboard, and electrical are very good. Shifting is stiff and not sloppy, and there is no shimmy, or wandering at 50mph, and higher. Recently I had new front brakes, front brake cylinders, tie rods, and a sway bar replaced by a local VW shop. They also did a complete tune up, clutch adjustment, and inspection. The results were: the upper ball joints could be better, and will need to be replaced in the near future. They also recommended a rebuilt, or new carburetor because of its unknown age, although the car starts, and runs smoothly. They were concerned about inner seals, and gaskets within the carb.. Obvious work needed: Some body work, or replacement is needed to both rear fenders. One has been slightly pushed in around the right tail light, and the left one had a poor bondo fix on the rear bottom edge, original sapphire am radio does not work, vinyl seats badly cracked, and I disconnected the interior roof light, door buzzer, and rear window defroster so the battery was not drained by switches left on by accident. The oil pressure light wire was disconnected by accident when the new ignition switch was installed. The speedometer cable is brand new, but the speedometer/mileage gauge still does not work. The front axle bar has had a small square plate welded on one side, probably done at the older restoration, and have seen this repair kit for vws in some catalogs. Although the integrity of the car is good, and is a dependable driver, it is still an ongoing project, to make it even better. The black areas on the body are where surface rust was chemically treated by me recently. Both doors do not sag, and are lined up to all surfaces. Battery one year old On Dec-28-14 at 13:44:36 PST, seller added the following information: Added information: Rear engine lid has been replaced with a used red one. It's paint job, red, is peeling off like skin revealing the original dull red paint underneath. This newer paint job appears to be some kind of gel coat. Since the floor pans, and running boards are so solid, I'm guessing the heater ducts were replaced too at that older restoration. Regardless, there is little heat even though the levers work. The rear bumper is being help on by 2 bolts, There are more needed to make it level. This is a car that is registered, insured, and driven around on weekends. I just drove it today, Sunday, the 28th.
