Vehicle Detail
Thank you for your interest in my Survivor Sea Blue 1966 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe, VIN 146164144 and matching engine #F0114689 with 54,000 original miles. All original interior including wool square weave carpets and bindings, rubber floor mats, excellent headlining with no rips, very good original dash with no cracks, and perfectly straight original door panels with all trim and tight map pockets. The original front seats have been disassembled and all seams have been re-stitched and reinforced with pronounced “puckers”, and the padding is flat per factory standards, all work was performed by a 356 upholstery specialist. The dash retains its original 1966-only trim, and radio block off plate. I prefer the sound of the mechanical music coming from the engine room, so no modern CD player is hiding anywhere, and no antenna drilled into the bodywork. The windows wind with ease and seal tightly against new surround and door seals. The rear quarter window attachments are all new and hinge firmly. The engine retains all of its original finishes and small parts down to the tiniest detail. I removed the engine and replaced all seals, replaced the clutch, rebuilt the orig. carb, orig. distributor, orig. fuel pump, and hand polished each part. The engine fires right up on one stab of the accelerator pump after sitting for a week, the choke kicks down after about 30 seconds to 900 rpm. The transmission was serviced and operates perfectly and with a tight shift linkage, each gear is selected positively up and down with a satisfying mechanical handshake between driver, transmission, engine and road. Under the bonnet is an original cardboard luggage protector, jack, spare tire, tool kit and no damage in the nose or aprons. The heat works very effectively and it is easy to modulate between hot and cold with the dash and tunnel controls. There are no reproduction parts installed on this car. All of the glass is original including the windshield which has no chips and no wiper scratches. The brakes were completely reworked with all new Ate slave cylinders, new soft lines, new hard lines in the rear, new shoes, turned drums, and new master cylinder and wheel bearings. The front beam has been completely rebuilt with new ball joints, steering tie rods, and new shocks all around. Although the original owner did not drill any holes in the body, mother nature did not show the same restraint. The Ghia developed some rust spots in the rockers & wheel wells early in its life, and received some body repair and a fresh single-stage paint job in the original color scheme and the color matches perfectly. This paint work was done in the mid-70’s and has now mellowed to a wonderful patina. The areas that were repaired have resurfaced, probably because the body filler shook back off. The rust holes are in the lower fenders and outer rockers, and behind the front turn signals. There is no rust in the floors, inner rockers, aprons, roof, doors or any structural areas. The paint has a wonderful patina, complete with a burned through spot where the car was “egged” early in life. I know that patina is an overused term these days, but it was this paint that drew me to the car. Although I, and other enthusiasts in my orbit, would be perfectly happy owning this car without doing any body repair, I am confident that the final sales price will have plenty of room for the new owner to consider repair and paint without being upside down. This is a wonderful driving Ghia that you will feel confident driving on long weekend trips. The steering is precise and light, the suspension is tight and nimble, the acceleration is spirited and the breaking is accurate.
