I made the trip of 200 miles to the east of Dallas to discover a true barn find. The older gentleman selling the cars had purchased them as a pair from a local estate five years earlier, where they had been stored in a garage for 30 years. I purchased the cars with the intent to re-sell at a profit, as I knew the Lark VIII convertible was somewhat rare and somewhat popular in its day. Having collected, restored and bought and sold antique and special interest cars for many years I had always had an appreciation for the Lark Eight but never had I a chance to own one. After reading multiple published road tests from the day, this car was well liked by the experts. In 1960, the Lark Eight was the smallest V8 convertible in the World, it cost new about the same $ as a V8 Impala or V8 Galaxie. In many ways the quality, comfort, ride and drive of the Lark exceeded that of its massed produced rivals In late February I offered one of the non-running cars on EBAY and had quite a bit of interest. A deranged or otherwise unsavory character bid a ridiculously high amount for car without intent to purchase and ultimately sabotaged the listing. In March, I took both cars to a restoration shop and spent over $6000 to get them in running and driving condition. I am now offering them for less than my investment as I have discovered these rare, stylish and well-built classics are under appreciated and in my opinion, under valued. An interested Ebayer let me know that there is an article in the November 2014 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines about a 60 Lark VIII convert. Check it out. This car is a 259 2BBL – 3 Spd standard with overdrive - full tinted glass – no power steering or brakes – last registered in Texas in 1980 The original factory yellow paint covers the entire car other than the passenger door that shows to have been repainted at one time. The body has no rust and only a few minor dings. This car appears to have no rust what so ever. The engine starts right up and runs smooth but does smoke a little. New parts include an NOS overdrive switch, water pump, fuel pump, belts and hoses, plugs, wires, cap and more; reconditioned radiator, fuel tank and exhaust and a recovered back seat. . All of the windows roll up and down and there is a top but it is in bad shape. The top system is not working although the pump has been reconditioned; the rams appear to be good yet it needs new hoses. All brake hydraulics have been rebuilt and shoes have been replaced as needed. Both front and rear bumpers have been re-plated. The car runs, drives and stops although the engine needs some additional freeze plugs replaced and it is not currently holding water. This is a great, solid and original car that has never been messed with and is now ready for a restoration. I am a member of the Studebaker Drivers Club. I sold the automatic car today (10-28), there is still time to make this little jewell Yours! After my last experience with an insane Studebaker fan, I have decided not to risk using the auction format. Pete @ 214-505-5005
