Vehicle Detail

1973 Volkswagen "Thing" Type 181 If you don't know about these, go read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_181 I bought this car in 1998. It was not able to run above idle, had cracked and rotten soft goods, no brakes, no exhaust, and twisted off exhaust studs in both heads. I fixed that all, got a bunch of new soft goods, had fun with it for quite a number of years, and even drove it in a friend's wedding. I now have a house, a wife, 5 other VWs to attend to, and a lot of other projects on my plate. It's now time to send it on to someone else that will give it the attention it deserves. I am trying to be as honest as possible in this description. If you have questions, please ask before bidding. You can not drive this car away (at least safely) so take that into consideration. The car is located outside of Ithaca, New York. $500 deposit must be made via PayPal within 48 hours of auction close. Good: Runs! Stops! Clean title Engine is set up as original. (It had dual Kadrons and K&N filters when I got it. It's back to a single Solex and an oil-bath filter.) Front axle beam replaced Steering damper and box replaced Brake fluid changed to DOT 5 silicone (doesn't absorb water) Replaced windshield and frame Comes with The Thing Shop Service Manual and Parts Diagrams Dual header exhaust from The Thing Shop Following soft goods from The Thing Shop (well over $1000 here):         convertible top     full side curtains     bags for side curtains     boot to cover convertible top when it's down     plastic covers to protect boot from sharp edges of top metal frame     Bad: Last NY State Inspection: 2003 Body is in very rough shape. Lots of rust. Holes and such. Eberspacher gasoline heater has not worked since I've owned it. (I've been scared of it honestly.) Tire sidewalls are starting to crack. Ball joints are very tight when turning, so the bolts are not tightened up Hubcaps (repro, not German) are rusting Driver's mirror glass cracked Brake warning light on - maybe just needs bleeding after sitting for so long? Generator warning light on - no idea there. One CV boot leaking grease
