Vehicle Detail

1939 PACKARD 4-door 110 - Flathead 6 cylinder engine Local pickup only. Car resides in Steens, MS (1 hour south of Tupelo, MS) Purchased in October 2006 to restore, but don't have the time to take this project on. Engine does not run. The car has always been kept in a garage since I have owned it. Car appears to be fairly complete; all major components are present. Have 2 extra good front fenders and an extra radiator grill. The car has a bit more rust than originally advertised. The left front door hinge is badly rusted. The previous owner stated that there is an overdrive unit installed. I am unable to confirm this. I have the title for this vehicle, but the previous owner (Mark Lambert) did not put it in his name (probably since the car isn't running), and I have not put the title in my name either since the car has not been restored and the car does not run. This should not be a problem and will work with the new owner to do whatever is necessary. Also I have provided the full contact information of the previous owner at the end of this description in case we have to engage his help as well. I will be traveling (old Model T tour) and won't be back until the 13th of October. So pickup cannot occur until after the 13th of October. Car is located at: 1356 Sanders Mill Road Steens, Mississippi 39766 Contact information: Darrel F Carter (662) 356-4764 Home (901) 219-2213 Cell darcarter@aol.com THIS is unusual... I actually have the ebay description of the ad... when I bought it... back in October 2006.... !! EBAY AD FROM OCTOBER 2006 !! QUESTION: Can you be specific about the rust? Where is the worst and how bad is it? Thanks ANSWER: Yes. As far as I [Mark Lambert] have determined, the worst of the rust is in the rearmost part of the front LH fender, the front part of the LH running board & the bottom of the valence pillars. This rust is as bad as rust gets - it's rusted through. Somehow, the RH side of the car has sustained no rust-through on its fender-to- running board joint... perhaps over the years of service most of the mud stuck to the driver's side. Fortunately, most of the rust damage is down low (on the flat, easily-repaired panels) and the car's frame structure is very solid. Thanks for your question. QUESTION: Is the car a 6 volt or has it been converted to 12 volt... ANSWER: Hello. No, never any conversions; it's an honest original 6-volt car... QUESTION: What type of work is necessary for the engine to work? Please be as specific as you can. Do you think it needs a complete motor overhaul or something less? Thanks ANSWER: Hello & thanks for your inquiry. My limited time has prevented me from doing much with the car - that's why I'm [Mark Lambert] selling it. Regarding the engine, all I've [Mark Lambert] done is check the dipstick (the oil was clean & at the correct level) and confirm that all of the components are there and nothing is missing. You might consider budgeting, as I [Mark Lambert] did when I [Mark Lambert] purchased the car, for a complete overhaul. However, I'd [Mark Lambert] advise just removing the cylinder head and checking all of the valves and cylinders to begin with. The bottom end of the Packard Six is so over- engineered, that there's a good chance that the engine would just need top end service to run well. DESCRIPTION: This 1939 Packard Six Touring Sedan is a matching number car. VIN 1282-5479, Engine # B8479 (Casting Date 10-5-38). Known history from new. Delivered to the first owner on November 10th 1938. I [Mark Lambert] purchased it in Columbia, Tennessee from the second owner's family. They had owned this car for over 50 years and had shown it at various AACA meets in the mid 1960's. This car is equipped with a complete factory Overdrive system. It also has many other great features typically found only in original cars such as this, including: its original Packard-stamped data plate, its original honeycomb radiator with the shutter thermostat, the original single ear radiator cap, the Packard Deluxe Accessory Oil Bath Air Cleaner, the pair of very rare original head light lenses (designated Right and Left sides), all original dash gauges, the rare original cats-eye cigarette lighter, all four original Packard Deluxe Accessory Wheel Trim Rings, the Packard radio box, the complete original Packard jack assembly & lug wrench, the extremely rare original Packard-supplied jack stand (one of these Packard jack stands sold recently on eBay for $275!), a Packard Deluxe Accessory Heater and an accessory oil filter. These features alone are worth far more than the reserve. Barn stored since 1969 and not currently running, other projects and responsibilities have consumed my time and now force a sale. This car needs a total restoration. It's an excellent restoration candidate because it's a complete car and it's an honest matching-number car. After all necessary drive train & brake work, the rest of the process can be done in stages while the car is being driven and enjoyed. The original interior, while no longer presentable, is intact enough for use and of great value to the restorer for exact patterns. This Packard Touring Sedan rolls on a fresh set of BF Goodrich Silvertown Wide Whitewall tires. Original body color is black. Body is currently sprayed in semi-gloss black primer. No rust through on chassis or floor boards. Rust through on the body panels where the southern road mud trapped moisture - front fenders, running boards, sills, etc... The heavy grade of American steel used in the manufacture of the body makes for straightforward rust and dent repair. Whether you restore it, make it into a terrific street rod or just transfer its many valuable parts to another Packard, it's a great investment. There is no warranty of any kind on this auction and this car is being sold "As is, Where is" Previous owner information: Mark Lambert 4406 Charlotte Ave Nashville, TN 37209 615-497-5530
