With Studebaker's impending doom looming on the corporate horizon, introducing radical design elements seemed the right thing to do in an attempt to create buzz. Such was the case with the release of the 1963 Wagonaire. In an effort to steal away buyers, its sales brochure proclaimed, "It's a Lark exclusive," referring to the sliding roof, which was available in the Regal or Daytona models within the Lark family. With the sliding panel hidden, oversized items--such as the refrigerator shown in the brochure--could be easily transported from one destination to another. Camping, star gazing, or just cruising down the boulevard new adventures. A fold-down "step" is recessed in the tailgate itself, designed to facilitate ingress and egress. I removed the carpet to see how the floor pans look and they are ok except the drivers side. It has been stored in a building for years the last time it was licensed was in 1976.
