Vehicle Detail

Feast your eyes on this gem! This beauty is true survivor, a remnant from the great days of Detroit muscle, when cars were made of steel instead of plastic. Powered by a 383 Commando V8, with the "bulletproof" Torqflite 727 transmission sending all of that power to the wheels, this "cruiser" is full of muscle that is just waiting to be flexed. You can feel and hear the power every time that big old engine fires up. With a little time and attention, you could be cruising down the highway, family in tow, headed for the mountains, the beach, or any other destination you have in mind. Admired by many, this old girl spent her entire life in the hands of just one man, until his death, when she was transferred to his sons. This is a truly rare PE45 style 1968 Fury I Suburban; one of only 6,424* made! The 101,000 miles are documented, in places in the hand of the original owner. The original owners manual, including the Certicard, you will find in the glove compartment. Along with the the title, bill of sale, and receipts, you'll find the build sheet! The big 383 roars to life with a squirt of starter fluid, and jump start. Then, with its two barrel Carter Carburetor, begins sipping from the four gallons of fresh gasoline in the tank. The original color light blue paint covers a previous coat of dark blue, that was put on top of the original light blue paint. A fresh paint job will restore her original glory. All of the trim and emblems are present, and where they belong. The windshield has a big crack down the middle, but the rest of the glass is good. Three of the hubcaps are present, the fourth took an unauthorized journey on its own. Inside, we have 99% of the original. You have a working AM radio! The dash pad is cracked, as would be expected after 46 in the New Mexico sun. The vinyl seats are torn. The carpet is complete, and solid, but really dirty. All of the door panels are in excellent condition, with one missing an armrest. All of the little, hard to find, details are present; the armrest ashtrays, the cigarette lighter (which works!), the dash ashtray, the glove compartment interior, the working lock on the glove compartment. The knobs on the window cranks might be the only little thing missing. The spare tire cover in the back is cracked, with small pieces missing, and the jack is incomplete. The A/C compressor turns freely, and the system seems to be holding pressure, but the dash controls are stuck. The power steering seems to be in good shape. The original steel wheels are wrapped in new rubber, though not all four match. The gauges all appear to work, with the possible exception of the temperature gauge, which I have not seen move at all. The speedometer cable either needs to be lubed or replaced. This rare gem spent her entire life, from 1968 to 2012, in New Mexico. As such, there is no significant rust anywhere. There is surface rust, especially where the paint has work through to bare metal, but those spots are few and small. The frame is solid, with no perforations anywhere. The same is true of the body, including the floorpans, from end to end. Please read all the way to the bottom of the listing; there is a lot of very important information below. Starting with, I am moving on 7/31/14, and the vehicle MUST be picked up by that date. I cannot leave it on the property. If there is a problem, I will do what I can to work with you on a solution. I have replaced the starter, starter relay, battery cables, wiring from starter relay to starter solenoid, voltage regulator, ballast resistor, ignition switch, ignition coil, distributor cap and rotor, points and condenser. Most of that was necessary, some of I did just to be thorough. I also reconnected the throttle linkage, which was done incorrectly. It is now correct, per the factory shop manual, which is included with the car. I also did an oil and filter change, replaced the PCV valve and the fuel filter, along with some small sections of the rubber fuel line, and the PCV hose. The points may need to be gapped, because I only have .016 and .018 gauges, and they're supposed to be set at .017. I did the best I could with what I have, and it's running fine with them. Because the car sat so long, and I was concerned about the oil all having drained down into the pan, I was advised to add a little oil on top of each piston through the spark plug holes to protect the pistons and rings. I did that, and of course that oil had to be burned off. Most of it has burned off, though there is still a little smoke from the left side exhaust, as of yesterday. I also discovered that the spark plug wires were not connected correctly at the distributor cap, so I corrected that a few days ago. The car is starting easier, running better, and what I thought was smoke was actually exhaust feeding back through the intake because of the improper firing order. That is gone. With the help of someone a lot more familiar with these cars, I have discovered some things I did not know about his one. The engine looks like it might have been painted, badly, at some point. One of the hinges on the tailgate may be broken, but can be repaired by welding. The gas tank was removed at some point, probably for cleaning, and the position of it, via the mounting straps, needs to be adjusted. I tried to do it, but the strap that sets the front to rear position, which is the one that needs to be adjusted, can only be accessed by removing the left rear wheel and fender lining/rock shield; too much work for me at this point. You can put gas in the tank, it's just not square inside the fuel door. The carburetor is not original, and is not the correct model for this year, but it is running fine with it. I have done my very best to describe everything, good and bad, BUT, this is a 46 year old car, I am not a professional mechanic, and I cannot guarantee that I will list every feature or defect, so by bidding on this auction, you acknowledge and accept that I cannot be responsible for anything that I fail to list, especially if it's something I don't know about from the vehicle's history, or that I don't recognize because I lack familiarity with the vehicle, it's condition, or due to lack of mechanical knowledge. The documented work that has been done, besides what I listed above: Full dual exhaust, 12/17/05Transmission: front seal, fluid, filter, and bands adjusted, 11/22/05Rear Differential: rebuilt, new pinion bearings & races, diff bearings & races, axle bearings & seals, new gear set, oil, housing gasket, 5/11/06. It was rebuilt as 2:72 according to the receipt. I'm including all of the parts that I replaced, an extra ballast resistor, a set of new Autolite spark plugs (I was going to replace them, but never got to it), and a set of new spark plug wires; I installed the new coil wire, and the #1 spark plug wire, because I thought they were needed, but then stopped. The rest of them need to be done. The connectors on the two wires I did are working fine, but the crimps are not pretty, so you might want to redo them. There is plenty of wire left on each that you could cut the ends off and put new connectors on them with no problem. Also included is an original 1968 Plymouth Factory Shop Manual. It has been invaluable in troubleshooting the ignition system, to get the car running again. It is missing one reverse light cover. The electric rear window is not working; I don't know what the problem is, but the window can be rolled down manually. The lock cylinder for the tailgate is missing. The battery is bad and needs to be replaced. It needs a tune up and probably needs the timing adjusted. Transmission pan looks to be leaking. Valve covers may be leaking. Carburetor may be leaking. The left turn signal is stuck on, though the switch moves freely. I think that's it. I will include all of the paperwork and receipts that I have. If, after auction close, the buyer wants me to put a new battery in it, they can choose what battery, pay for it, and I will pick it up and install it. Or they can send me the money via Paypal, and I will take care of it. The Everstart Maxx from Walmart is ~$96. They have very high ratings from Consumer Reports, much to my surprise. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I will do my best to answer them. Check out the pictures closely, as they may show anything that I have missed.
