Vehicle Detail
1989 Volkswagen Jetta 1.6L non-turbo diesel 5 speed manual transmission AC, power steering, power brakes Probably has 300k miles on it. Odometer says 200k but has never worked since I've owned it. In the 10 years I've had it, I've undoubtedly put over 100k on it. Pedigree: Clean NYS title. Not salvage. Drove across the country from NY to California in 2011. In March I took the car on a 3600+ mile trip from NY to NC, FL, TX, GA, and back. 41 mpg overall. Mechanically solid, if quirky. I'd keep it, but my wife tells me that I have too many cars. Passed NYS Inspection this June Good: New front pads and vented rotors last year (upgrade from standard solid rotors) All brake hoses replaced with stainless steel braided last year (never rust) All brake lines replaced with copper-nickel alloy (never rust) Front calipers replaced (with ATE) in 2004, new seals in 2012 New glow plugs in 2011 Brake fluid replaced with silicone DOT 5 (repels water, doesn't go bad) Power steering rack hard lines replaced with copper-nickel alloy (never rust) Brake proportioning valve replaced last year Under-hood fuel filter replaced this year Ran 100% biodiesel when living in San Francisco in 2011, so that cleaned engine internals nicely. All v-belts replaced within last two years (VW/Continental OEM) Euro E-code H4 headlights with city lights Additional LED brake light in each back tail light (where rear fog would go) Comes with Bentley service manual (crazy awesome fix it manual) TONS of extra parts and stuff, including one extra door, and bumper cover which isn't on the vehicle at the moment. Replaced all door latches in 2011. (common issue with Mk2 cars) VW radio with Aux In jack for your iPod, phone, etc. Two year old Michelin X-Ice snow tires New driver's side rear wheel bearing in May New AC condenser, dryer, and radiator in 2011 AC retrofitted to R134a (yes, the air conditioning does work!) Coolant changed to VW G12 (pink - always use this, never green) New exhaust system last year Trunk liner upgraded to Jetta GL "carpeting" and trunk light. New starter in 2011 Red Line MTL synthetic gear oil in transmission Red Line synthetic power steering fluid Always used Mobil Delvac diesel truck motor oil K&N air filter in stock airbox (any increase in air intake helps diesels) Bad: Slow Jetta is slow Rusty/ugly paint, but no rust is truly cancerous except around driver's side rear door handle, but that's also the spare door I have for it. Strut towers are just fine. Alternator belt gets thrown every so often due to goofy design. Annoying, but 2 spares are in the trunk. Fastest I've done the change is 16 mins. AC belt slips and squeals when AC is turned on. Probably should be replaced with slightly smaller belt and retensioned. Alternator doesn't charge until you bring engine past idle (but that's what voltmeter is for). Trivial annoyance. Easily explainable. One headlight light bulb isn't being held in properly so light is aimed poorly Battery needs to be in tip top shape. Diesels start hard, especially in winter Slow oil leak on passenger side Will probably need struts/shocks soon, but has Bilsteins (German OEM) on it currently. Speedo reads 4 mph high Right rear door is stuck closed. Can be fixed by replacing whatever is goofed up in behind the door cards. This started recently. Alloy wheels (VW "bottlecap" style) have some dents, which makes tires go soft from time to time. If I were keeping the car I'd have the rims straightened by a pro. Odyssey battery not included. In fact, none will be.Ok, Odyseey battery is now included. Chip in windshield Vehicle located in Ithaca, New York.
