Vehicle Detail
Here is your chance to get a great piece of history and finish it to your taste. This camper needs work and can be given just enough TLC to run as original or completely restored to a like new show piece. The original Owner's Manual shows it was bought new from Warren Volkswagen in Washington, NJ in 3/75. The original plastic Owner's ID card is still in a pocket in the manual. The manual shows all the service that was performed for the first 30,000 miles with the dealer stamps. The original owner was from Easton, PA and sold the camper to a man in Endicott, NY later in 1975. A co-worker of mine found it parked in this man's garage where it had been since the early 90's and bought it in 2009. He drove it to Boston, MA and blew a spark plug out. He sold it to me in 2011 and I don't have the time to finish it. In the spring of 2013 I removed the engine. The top was tore down. The rod journals were measured and all perfect so I was advised that there was no need to split the case and remove the crank. New rod bearings, pistons, pins, rings and jugs were installed. I bought two complete rebuilt heads with new guides, valves, springs, etc. New rear seal and all gaskets. I had the original dual carbs replaced with a single 2 barrel progressive carb to eliminate all the problems with the dual carb setup. I also had an electronic ignition unit installed in place of the points to eliminate those problems. This thing starts and runs perfect. I put 2,000 miles on it last fall with no problems. It is fun to drive and turns heads. The transmission worked fine but the shift linkage needs to be rebuilt. While drivable and NY State inspected it still needs a few little things repaired. The rear brakes need complete rebuilding. The shift linkage needs to be rebuilt at the front joint. The gas gauge works above 3/4 and below 1/4 but not in-between. It needs the sending unit replaced. The pop-up top canvas is dry rotted and rips like paper. It needs new canvas and seals. All the cushions for the couch and upper and lower beds are in good shape they just need cleaning. The front seats need rebuilding or replacing. I have never looked at the stove, sink or fridge although they are all there along with the original LP tank. The body is in really good shape and very easy to restore. The front doors need repair on the bottoms and the right rear corner has been repaired at some time in the past and may need to be redone. Other than that there is a couple of surface rust spots but no rot. All the glass is in good shape. Volkswagen quit building these vans last year. The older ones are hard to find and are becoming more valuable every day. Bid now so you don't miss your chance to get a hold of this piece of history! The successful bidder must pay $500.00 down by PayPal within 24 hours of the auction close. The balance due and van pick up must be at my location within 7 days of the auction close. I prefer cash in person but will take a certified bank check or money orders and will release the van only after my bank tells me the funds have cleared. I am willing to discuss some help with delivery.
