Vehicle Detail
Goldwing 1978 standard. This is a project bike. It is NOT currently running. I pride myself in attention to details so I am going to do my best to describe everything about this bike so that you can make an informed decision. I bought this bike in 2005. It was running great then and I probably put about 1000 miles on it over a years’ time. Then the dreaded failure of alternator stator descended upon my beautiful classic Goldwing. I took it to a reputable Goldwing mechanic and had the stator replaced and while we were at it he replaced the clutch also. It was back to working great. Then in 2008 I was riding around and the clutch cable basically “let loose”. I don’t think the cable broke; I think that it came loose inside of the housing on the back of the engine. There is an access door on the back of the engine where I think the problem is. I looked on the North American Goldwing Forum and a seemingly knowledgeable guy says “You can get to it w/o removing the rear wheel it's just real tight. If you put it on the center stand or jack it up on a lift or center stand it over a curb you can get to it from the bottom”; response to this was “Thank you for all the advice, I got the clutch cover off just to find out that it had 2 10mm bolts that holds a cover on the case and that's where the cable is at”. He reconnected the cable and fixed it. So I have been planning on doing this since 2008. I guess my priorities have changed. When we moved, 2 years ago, I went to load the bike on to a trailer and low and behold, when I squeezed the front brake lever, the front brake caliper basically locked closed on the rotor. A common problem when bikes sit idle for a long time. So, I think I am going to summarize with – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: The Good: The bike is cosmetically very nice. It has a beautiful paint job (see photos). It has a brand new Corbin seat – it is literally brand new. I never put it on the bike until now, so it has been in the original plastic covering as it came from Corbin factory. I also have the original seat – see photo, it has some splits in it. The tires have good tread on them – see the photos; front tire has 1000 miles on it. When the clutch cable let loose in 2008; after I got it home later that day, I had enough functional thinking left to close the petcock from the gas tank and run the engine until it stopped. I then choked it and ran a little more just to make sure that the carbs were as empty as they could get. It has sat that way ever since; the gas petcock has never been opened since then, so hopefully the carbs are still OK. Hopefully will not need cleaning. It has the original Owner’s Manual and tool kit (see photo, I think pliers or something is missing, but is pretty complete). The Bad: Well, as stated above you will have a project ahead of you when you get this bike home. Reconnect the clutch cable at the rear of the engine (I think but cannot guarantee this is the problem, but I would like to say this is an educated guess). Front brakes are locked closed and have been removed from the rotors. The bolts to reattach are there and the calipers are zip-tied so they don’t flop around – see photo. There is some pitting and small rust spots here and there on the chrome – forks, back fender, etc; but not real bad. The front fender has some scratches – see photo. There are 2 tiny paint chips on the right side of the tank cover – see photo – you have to look close to see them. Even though the tires have good tread, remember that these tires are about 10 years old, so use your judgment on this part. The Ugly: I am an idiot not to fix this bike! I have owned 14 motorcycles over about 40 years – 4 of them have been Goldwings. I have worked on a lot of them and enjoyed riding for lots of years. I could fix all this and ride it and enjoy this classic bike. But enough time has gone by. I hope this bike goes to a good home. Odometer says 26592 but I am not sure that this is really correct or not; since I bought it used and the Title says “Odometer: Exempt” I don’t know why it says this? Sorry. I have a valid Title for this bike. Ask me any questions; I may have left something out. Thanks for looking. On May-26-14 at 21:11:43 PDT, seller added the following information: UPDATE 05/27/14: I found some more useful items for the future owner of this motorcycle. One item in particular - I have the "Honda GL1000 Shop Manual, '75 - '79 on a CD. I also printed it out. All of the printed out part is very readable but the printed photos are not great resolution. But all the photos on the CD version are very clear. I dont know why the photos did not print as clear on the hard copy. But, bottomline, you can look at the photos on the CD - on your computer screen, and see all the details; use either the printed (hard copy) version or the CD version on you computer. This will be an invaluable resource for you doing the needed repairs on this bike. I am so glad that I found this... it took me a while to locate it. I also have the Clymer Honda GL 1000 & 1100 Fours - 1975 - 1983, Service - Repair - Maintenance manual; it is Clymer #M340 manual. This will be very helpful to you also. I have a stack of things that I thought were interesting that I printed from doing research on the internet shortly after I got the bike in 2005 - so it is dated material, but you may find some of it interesting - basically specs, tips, maintance items, original design criteria by Honda for the Goldwing, etc. I have 2 sets of Emgo disc brake pads, model# M51853 for GL1000, etc. One - Oil filter - honda 15410-426-010 which is for the '78 Goldwing. Some bushings - dont know what these are for... 4 new spark plugs; a fuel filter; and a few other odds and ends. I forgot to get all this stuff and take a photo of these, sorry. But, I think that I have described these well enough and that these will be included with the bike. Best of luck bidding. Thanks.
