Vehicle Detail
NOTE: Several hundred dollars worth of repairs/upgrades have been performed since last listing expired. This rare JDM 1965 Honda 250cc Scrambler features a rare Type 2 (360 degree) engine, turn signal system with correct wiring/switch and a/m signal lights, factory heel-toe shifter, factory solid footpegs, seamless fuel tank, short heat shield exhaust pipes with baffles and even the original OEM tires from the factory. Original "Honda Dream 250" tank badges were used in Japan even after they were changed to the "Honda 250" styles in the U.S. The seat is all original and in good condition but the rubber foam is degrading. Fuel tank was recently cleaned and coated inside. Engine has 170-180 psi compression. All electrical systems are working well. Factory toolkit is included as are a Japanese language owner's manual and service booklet. The engine number is CL72-1503023. The number 5 digit in the VIN/Engine number denotes a Type 2 engine configuration. One of the features of the Type 2 engine setup is a unique set of 2nd and 3rd transmission gears, which have their own 274 product code. The 274 code is specific to the domestic Type 2 domestic Japanese bike model.Note that this bike is factory-equipped with "big brake" Type 2 suspension and wheels, which were released before the US model CL77s had their brakes/wheels/suspension upgrade in 1966. Stock pipes in good condition, but discolored around the front header section. NOS exhaust flanges/joints just installed. Stock slip-in baffles are still in place, which mutes the exhaust sound just a little bit. Exhaust note at idle is more like a little Triumph, but once you wind it up, it sounds like the classic Honda Scrambler symphony of sound. In the past month, the following work/parts have been installed: New battery, throttle cable, petcock repair, clutch adjuster, engine case screws, a/m replacement passenger footpeg rubbers, horn bushing repair kit, air filters, air filter tubes, air filter cover rubber bumpers, carburetor overhaul and rejetting, new OEM N-D point plate and points, clutch repairs (clutch adjuster), shifter shaft, ignition coil replacement, condenser and fuel tank coating. The clutch cable has been replaced with a new a/m unit and the k/s shaft and countershaft seals have been replaced as well. Current gearing is now changed to 15-34 (CB77 sprocket) with new RK drive chain. Stock CB72-77 sprockets will fit the rear hub, so many tooth options are available.I have just replaced steering stem and added new a/m fork boots. I had difficulty with the fork lock removal as the key wouldn't work, so removed it by taking out the tumblers and springs. That will need to be reassembled by a locksmith, but I have all the small parts and the chromed cover. Areas needing attention: left handlebar end is bent up/kinked at crossbar. The previous owner repainted all of the silver parts with red. All red parts have been repainted with Cloud Silver. The bike is original, unrestored and has "patina" everywhere and you can either leave it as-is or refinish the parts. The front fender and stay are in excellent condition. Scrambler owner's know how difficult it is to find a decent fender/stay combo for the big brake models. The left side cover has a small crack at the edge and there was a little vibration damage beneath the tail light bracket, when removed for painting. Tires should be replaced, but are in remarkable original condition, but having the same date code on the side walls. Speedometer is in kph, of course and Foreign Speedo, here in San Diego has just rebuilt it for me. New speedometer packing is available at RETROBIKES site in WA.Bike is un-restored and has the normal amount of dirt, corrosion, scratches, etc. This is a bike you can enjoy right now and work on it a little bit at a time, if you choose to do a slow restoration. The rims are nice and round and have very little pitting, as the bike was garaged for the past 30 years or more. The bike starts on the first kick, does not smoke or make any unusual sounds. From NADA website: 1965 Honda CL72 SCRAMBLER 250 Values Excellent $5,500 Very Good $4,320 Good $2,120 Fair $1,200 Only a few of the domestic CL72s are known in the U.S. at this time, along with a handful of the larger domestic CL300 Scramblers, so the "values" for these rare models are unknown. True Honda Scrambler enthusiasts will want to add this one to their collection. Bike title is in process with CA DMV for a new title (only) in my name. The Indiana title showed the year model as 1966, so that will carry over to the new CA title. The low serial numbers indicate a 1965 production date, however. Speedometer is in kilometers (around 13,400km which computes to about 8k original miles). Bike is listed locally in SoCal and so is subject to prior sale prior to the end of this auction. To recap, the auction includes: This rare 1965 domestic CL72 250cc Scrambler, which comes with the Japanese language owner's manual (very nice condition and completely different that the plain B&W US booklet), the Japanese language warranty/service booklet, a 1974 Clymer's 250-305cc shop manual, a clear CA title, one key (a copy, not original key), the factory tool kit and pouch and for the lucky new owner a copy of my Honda Restoration Guide CD, which includes a copy of the Japanese language parts book, showing all the specific part numbers for the domestic edition. PLEASE NOTE: I will be out of town from 5/10 thru 5/12 and may not be back in time for the close of this auction. No questions, so far, so I guess I covered everything that needs an answer already...
