Vehicle Detail
1980 Mercedes 450SL Convertible **NO RESERVE** 55,422 Miles Showing Both Soft and Hard Tops New Grey Vinyl Interior Casually Owned/Maintained You are bidding on a no reserve 1980 Mercedes 450SL in full running/drivable mechanical condition. The vehicle is located in Clarkston Michigan and I will make myself available for inspections/test drives (please see bottom of description for appointment details). Before my ownership the car was (and still is) a casual driver on nicer days. This Mercedes was never a daily driver and shows in the mileage. I have both color matched hard and soft tops and the hardtop and stand are included with the sale. I am trying to make space for a new Mustang convertible and I don't plan on keeping the Mercedes or paying high storage fee's to keep it so it has to go. Hence the no-reserve auction.. The car has always been stored in the garage as I refuse to park any of my vehicles outside. I'll do my best to paint an accurate idea of the cosmetic condition of this 450SL (below): I would consider the Blue metallic paint on this Mercedes to show well overall (glossy), but classify it as a 10-footer. It shows good enough to feel proud of driving it but as you get closer it definitely is starting to show its age (scratches/chips/ding on passenger door). It was repainted by the previous owner in 2004 and I'd say the paint definitely has some years of enjoyment left in it. The body is in overall good condition with a few areas to mention (shown in photos). The front right headlight "top-lip" area has some rust bubbling under the paint. I've never taken it to the body shop to see how much this would cost to correct but it is in a small enough area that I don't feel it would be anything too costly. It is far from an "eye sore" but it is definitely there. The right lower rocker panel also shows a small circular patch which has some surface rust showing. Other than that there are no major issues on the body that I have noticed or come across. The interior has new grey vinyl seats and door panels and they are in excellent condition and show very well. I never understood why the tan carpet was never re-dyed and color matched, however, this does not detract too much from the overall aesthetic for me. The carpeting shows well overall with some signs of age. The console/buttons/wood grain are intact but also show wear. As with all cars I've owned/sold, I feel the undercarriage is an important aspect of the cars overall condition so I've included photographs. The underbody has been coated to protect it from the elements and a lot of times this coating "scales" but it is there to protect it. The trunk carpeting is fairly stained and would benefit from a re-upholstry if that is something you would want to do. Mechanically, this Mercedes runs and drives very well. It always starts right up for me (even when starting it in my garage during a cold winter after a couple weeks of not driving it). The power brakes, steering, etc all function well and I have never noticed any issues. The car idles fine (although I notice a higher/louder idle if I havent started it for a couple of weeks which goes away after a few minutes of running/warming up. - this might be normal?) Lights, horn, blinkers, radio, etc all work. There are a few functionality areas to mention. The right power window motor works but the switch in the car is broken and "off track" (should be an easy fix). Also, the defroster/heat blows but I get nothing out of the vents when I turn on the A/C. I've never minded this because I've always had the top down but I'm not sure what it would take to get the A/C blowing cold again (maybe just a recharge?). Overall, this is would make an excellent casual summer convertible-cruiser and will be bought for a very reasonable price. The car is not cosmetically perfect, but still shows well. Again, this car is available for inspection so please contact me if you would like to set up an appointment. Please have any questions or concerns answered before bidding. Also, I always try my best to describe any item I am selling, but I am not a mechanic! Please have the car inspected by yourself or professionally if there is any concern. This car has always been a pleasure to drive for me and has always run well. I'm sure it will make the next owner happy also! This car has a clear Michigan Title.I will expect a deposit of $1,000 or up to %25 of the final selling price (whichever is less) within 3 hours of auction close and the remainder within Two days. Thanks and good luck on your bidding!
