Vehicle Detail

The Lotus Elan was the first Lotus road car to use the now-famous steel backbone chassis with a fiberglass body. At 1,500 lbs, the Elan embodied Colin Chapman"s minimum weight design philosophy. The Elan was technologically advanced with a DOHC 1557 cc engine, 4-wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering and 4-wheel independent suspension. I am pleased to be offering for sale a beautiful, mechanically solid, 1965 Lotus Elan S2 RHD finished in factory correct Cirrus White over Black. The recipient of a cosmetic and mechanical restoration, including refreshed seat covers and chrome making it a gorgeous, pure, very stock Elan roadster. I originally purchased the car in 1986 while enjoying a vacation in the UK and shipped it to the US when my trip was completed. Impressed with its honesty, lack of rust and complete originality, I began sorting through its mechanical systems and cosmetics to return it to its former glory. The car was disassembled down to the last bolt. All underside components were stripped and powder coated. The car received a high quality, bare-fiberglass re-spray in factory correct single stage Cirrus White. The bright work was re-chromed, all of the wiring was replaced and the interior was reupholstered in timelessly beautiful and correct black covers and “Rhino Hide” rubber mats. The wood trimmed dash and rare wood steering wheel complete the period look. The result of these efforts is an Elan that looks as though it has just recently left the factory in 1965. The body is straight and free of any evidence of accidents with excellent panel fits and gaps. Extensive work has been performed to make sure the car is as mechanically sound as it is beautiful. The original gearbox has been rebuilt and less than 500 miles have been accumulated since completion. The engine work was performed and included a resurfaced crank, all new bearings, a boiled block, a new timing chain, a resurfaced head, resurfaced camshafts and a new oil pump and other ancillary parts. The car also has a new clutch and throw-out bearing and master cylinder, and the brakes have been rebuilt from top to bottom with new master, new shoes, emergency brake pads and front disks. The car is mechanically fit, its factory original engine firing up effortlessly, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the gears. Performance is accompanied by an excellent ride quality and no proclivity for overheating. The car brakes straight and true, the suspension is sound and it is a joy to be behind the wheel, whether tooling through town or roaring through the canyons. The two opportunities of improvement are the soft top is over 30 year’s old but very seldom used on the car. It doesn't have any tears and fits well but the clear windows are not as fresh as they once were. The other is a few chips and rubbing of the paint on the driver’s side door sill and other minor paint flaws. With the Buy-it-Now price the car is accompanied by its manuals, maintenance log, period sales brochure, original tool kit, as well as its spare tire. Many spares will be included including a pair of seats, a set of 4 bolt on rims with hub caps, tinted windshield, side glass, fuel tank, lower rear “A” arms, output shafts, four-speed transmission and a period correct Moto Lita steering wheel with Lotus horn button, plus many other spares not listed. I want this car to go to great home and would be happy to further discuss it and answer any questions, so please feel free to email or call me at 510-579-5111. I have tried to honestly and accurately describe this Lotus. While it was a restored car and has been lovingly maintained, it is not a concourse trailer-queen; it's a 1960's British Sports Car, which shows well but does have some minor imperfections.TERMS & CONDITIONS: By placing a bid on this vehicle you are entering into a legal and binding contract to purchase the above-described vehicle.
