Vehicle Detail
I purchased this 1967 R 50/2 in 2002 from the local BMW dealer. The dealer had placed new tires, new wheels, and new exhaust pipes. Shortly thereafter that same year, the carburetors leaked, and the driveshaft boot leaked, and the main engine oil leaked. I had a local mechanic (not the dealer) rebuild the carburetors such that they no longer leak, and a new drive shaft boot was placed. The engine seals were replaced, and it never leaked oil again. I bought a Corbin seat and placed it on the motorcycle. The original OEM dual seat is in good condition, and comes with the motorcycle. I bought reproduction Enduro bags (so called "beetle bags"), and placed them on the motorcycle. I had the bags hand painted the original BMW pinstripe. The turn signals in the Enduro bags work, and are connected correctly. There are simple keys for the bags. I took off the handlebar mirrors, and bought mirrors that screw into the headlamp assembly. The hella turn signals on the handlebars function. The gas tank is in good condition, with the appropriate red paint inside the tank. The kickstarter broke last year (the aluminum one), and I replaced it with a stainless steel kick starter from benchworks. The battery is about 3 years old. It is always on a battery tender. there is an easy connection cord to the 6 volt tender. The winning bidder may have may have the 6 volt tender. I purchased this motorcycle with 59,703 miles in 2002 .it now has 60,455 miles. The speedometer works, although as you can see in the pictures it is stained. The motorcycle is mostly rust free, but you can see from the pictures that the steering column lock has surface rust on it… I do not have the key for the steering column lock. I have two ignition keys: one of them has the original plastic, or "bakelight ?" handle. The license plate holder is custom ,is attached to a helmet lock. The motorcycle, when cold , takes 3 to 5 kicks to start it. The carburetors must be hand primed first. The bike needs to warm up prior to driving it. When the bike is warm, it starts with one kick. It runs reliably. I have not taken it on the freeway, and only driven it around town. I have never driven it in the rain. It is always garaged and covered. The headlight usually works, but occasionally it won't turn on when the key is clicked, and the key must be turned back into the original position and reclicked to turn it on. The pictures show some dust and a few cobwebs, and some wax that was not taken off completely. A couple hours of elbow grease will improve the bike. It probably could use a tune-up, also. In addition to receiving the bike that is shown, the successful bidder will receive the OEM dual seat ( no significant tears or stains on the seat), a 6 volt battery tender ,two keys to the bike, two keys to the helmet lock, two keys to the bags, and a Nieman blank key (made in Germany) that is the correct type of blank key to the tool box. The buyer will need to have a locksmith open the toolbox and configure the blank. I just checked the oil today , it is down less than 1/4 liter from the last oil change over two years ago. There are no perceptible fluid leaks that I can tell. However the carburetors will leak, slowly, when the side kickstand is used...they will not leak when the center stand is used. Both the side stand and the center stand function correctly. I recognize that people are busy around the holidays, and I am flexible about the pickup date. If you give a larger deposit (perhaps $500) to show earnest intent, I could keep the bike garaged and covered until the end of January for the successful bidder to pick up the bike. $500 will be subtracted from the final winning bid price, to be paid, preferably in cash, when you pick up the bike. I have mixed feelings about selling the bike, I hope it will go to someone who will continue the restoration that I started. The starting bid price ($6000) is about half of the amount of money that I have in the bike. On Dec-17-13 at 08:15:03 PST, seller added the following information: Although I don't provide shipping, I can have the bike available for your designated shipping company at a mutually agreeable time...or deliver it to a local shipping company (within ten miles) after your money order or cashier's check clears at the bank.On Dec-21-13 at 23:34:26 PST, seller added the following information: I have found an R50 Instruction Manual for the R50 US, that I bought years ago. It will come with the bike. Additionally, I have inspected the speedometer more closely...it is not stained and it looks good. It is the glass cover that is stained and should be replaced. This will be far cheaper than changing the face of the speedometer. On Dec-22-13 at 23:20:23 PST, seller added the following information: For a picture and audio of the bike running go to this youtube link : http://youtu.be/WL02E_U5tyU Also you can see the dual seat, and the owners manual for a R50 US, both which come with the bike.On Dec-24-13 at 17:29:40 PST, seller added the following information: The VIN on the frame and the engine were verified to be the same, by two ebay members who came to look at the bike.
