Vehicle Detail

This car can not be duplicated for twice the starting price, including the hard to find period performance parts. 1969 street/race Datsun 510 BRE, John Morton, 2.5 Challenge Trans-Am replica. The original car is in the Datsun museum worth an estimated $250,000. Here is a limited history for people not familiar with the Datsun 510. The Datsun 510 is a Japanese copy of the BMW 1600/2002 right down to it's overhead cam, engine and independent rear suspension system. The 510 could be purchased for half the price of the BMW, back in the day. Datsun knew, that to sell cars in America, you had to "win on Sunday, to sell on Monday". Datsun had already been working with Peter Brock's BRE team on the Datsun Roadster and 240Z car, in SCCA amateur racing. When it was time to go professional racing with the 510 in the SCCA 2.5 challenge trans-am series, BRE with driver John Morton rose to the cause, winning in 1971-1972 beating Alfa Romeo, BMW and all others with this low dollar "grocery" getter. This started the beginning of the cult culture for this car that has lasted more then 40 years. With celebrities like Adam Carrolla racing Datsuns and Jay Leno featuring a 510 on his car show, has now brought the cars from cult status to mainstream. Many long time 510 owners, that want to buy another car, are complaining about the severe value jump on these cars. They call it the "Leno" effect. Articles have been written that the start of the Japanese collector market has begun. The Datsun 510 is near the top of the list. Yes, not only is this a fun car to drive, it has investment value. I am including a signed copy by John Morton and Sylvia Wilkinson, of the Stainless Steel Carrot. The book, authored by Sylvia Wilkinson in 1972, chronicles the 1672-1972 race season with BRE, John Morton and the 510. I have arranged for John Morton to sign this car in person, at a convenient time for him, if it goes back to California. If it goes elsewhere, John will sign the glove box door when it is sent to him. Why am I selling this car? I have too many Datsuns, and rarely have time to drive it. When I have driven the car, it gets lots of attention. People are always giving me the thumbs up, and have actually pulled in my driveway to take pictures and talk to me about it. I truly get more attention in this car then any other. I purchased this car as a fresh build 7 years ago. I bought the car the way it sits. I can not take credit for the build. It's a solid west coast car, with 2000 miles on it since the build 7 years ago. I always wanted a BRE replica, and did not have the time to do a street car, so I just wrote the check for this one. The original owner built the car in 2006 to specifications of the early replica cars of the 1970's. This includes:blueprinted and balanced 140hp, L-16 engine, rare period BRE intake manifold, SSS / 219 head, Weber 45 side draft carbs, Mallory Unilite ignition, coated header with custom stainless exhaust lightened flywheel with roadster clutch and Z car 5 speed Also has the famed period correct Mulholland suspension with new shocks authentic Libre lightweight wheels (on car) Included are a new set of race Ferodo DS11 front brake pads Also includes a set of aluminum Z brake drums The interior is completely new, with cloth seats, headliner and carpet. The car also has high intensity headlights. Body is in great shape for it's age. The only filler I know of on this car is on the drivers side lower rear corner panel (maybe fender bender damage). Rocker panels are solid and original (see picture). The paint job is very nice overall. I would say a 7.5 out of 10. Some people comment that it has a vintage patina. I did find a small run in the paint for the first time while washing it up for the photo's. The dash board has cracks but the previous owner made a nice cover that hides it. There are also minor chips and paint wear. There are couple of things that you may want to attend to. The drivers window, when rolled up, has an 1/8" opening at the top, which didn't bother me since I drove with the windows down. The yellow headlights are not hooked up. The cassette stereo is not hooked up. The rear sway bar needs to be installed, the shifter boot needs to be bolted in place. If desired, the car could be vintage raced with the addition of a fuel cell, bolt in roll bar and racing seat belts. Car is a 1969 510, but is titled as a 1970. I was told that if the car sat on the lot back in the day and was sold, it was titled during the year it was sold even if it was made the year before. If desired, at an additional price, I have a new, 200hp 2.4 L Rebello motor (3,500)I also have a bolt in roll bar ($400) Under dash A/C system ($250) 4 new Anthricite Revolution 14", 4 spoke wheels with new Comp TA rubber ($1,500) I would have no reservations about driving this car cross country. Car is for sale locally also, so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Buyer pays all delivery charges in US or Overseas No Paypal, please see payment description.
