Vehicle Detail
1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS – Numbers Matching 396/325 - Factory 4-Speed Car - DocumentedProtect-o-Plate – Original Bill of Sale – Owner’s Manual You are bidding on a well documented 1969 Chevelle Super Sport, Assembled in Atlanta Georgia and originally sold at Reeder Chevrolet of Knoxville Tennessee, September 15th, 1969 - For a total purchase price of $4,469.00! A 1965 Mercury Comet was traded in at the time bringing the out-the-door price to $3,347. This is known today because the purchase documentation has been preserved throughout the years. The Protect-o-Plate and original bill of sale are both intact showing this Chevelle to be a true Super Sport, maintaining its original (L35) 396/325 Engine (photographed and decoded) along with a 4-Speed Transmission. This Chevy rolled off the factory as a Garnet Red (52) car with a Black Vinyl top (B). It has been mechanically maintained throughout the years, going through a few color changes until a higher level restoration was completed (around 99’-00’). During the restoration, the car had its vinyl top removed and took on Black as its new color (w/ Red SS Stripes). A beautiful combination that shows excellently (I will discuss this Chevelle’s current condition further below). The original block was rebuilt and given a little extra “kick” by General Kinetics Co. of Detroit Michigan by installing a mild lift cam (lift/duration specs included). This Chevelle decodes as follows:VIN: 136379A351992[1] Chevrolet[36] Malibu[37] Two Door Sport Coupe[9] 1969[A] Atlanta,Georga (Assembly Plant)[351992] Sequence number – This number can be found stamped on this Chevelle’s engine block, on the original Protect-o-Plate, Purchase invoice, and Title Engine: T0729JA[T] Built in Tonawanda[0729] Build Date of July 27th[JA] 396 Cubic Inch Engine (L35) with 325 Horsepower coupled to a 4 Speed Transmission***The protect-o-plate reads T0729KA (a typo by the regional sales department). There was no "KA" coded Chevelles... This should read "JA" Body Number Plate (Trim Tag):[ST 69] 1969[13637] Two Door Sport Coupe[ATL] Atlanta Georgia[TR 756] Black Vinyl Interior (as remains today)[52] Garnet Red Condition:If I was to sum it up in one sentence- this Chevelle shows very well. Having been restored in early 2000, this SS has been maintained and enjoyed. Although this Chevy has a slightly dated restoration, the paint lays very evenly showing no dull areas along the body. There are also no thin spots. The photos should give a good impression of its luster (and reflective capabilities). I would give the paint a strong 7.5 out of 10 and it could be enjoyed/maintained for many years to come. There are a few paint flaws (included in photographs) which I will describe. On the passenger side roof of the car where it folds above the rear quarterpanel, there is a 2” long split in the paint. There is some paint un-evenness from filler where the front antenna originally was (very small in size). There are two small spider cracks on the left and right side trunk lid (about 1.5”). Lastly, there is a small 1” scratch on the hood, front center. I will repeat, the paint overall shows well, and these minor imperfections do not detract much from the paint being viewed as a whole. The Chrome, front and back bumpers, are in great shape (8 out of 10) showing no pitting. The main cosmetic downfall (in my opinion) are the rear trim pieces including both taillight bezels, and ss strip below the lip of the trunk. These pieces are beginning to show minor pitting, and, if you are looking for show winning quality, could be easily replaced. If I was to keep this Chevelle, that would be my next investment. The rear window trim (and window) also show some signs of scuffing, probably from not being taped properly while using a DA. The grill and headlight trim are in good shape. The interior is the original Black Vinyl with a clean and well maintained carpet. The vinyl seats are in great shape with the driver’s side seat showing a little more wear (small .5” tear). The steering wheel has a small 2cm gap towards the top and a few scuffs from where the previous owners "easy turn" knob was installed. The tires are period correct bias plys which are in great shape for their age (no dry rotting, etc) with a lot of good tread left. The engine compartment is photographed. The underbody is very solid, as depicted in the photographs. Mechanics:This Chevelle is in every way ready to cruise. Maintenance/Oil Changes/Brakes are all up to date. All of the lights (including the interior) work. The transmission shifts smoothly and the car has a definite healthy sound to it! The ride is smooth, with the exception of the trade-off you get from the period correct bias ply tires! A change-over to radials would definitely give the handling a more modern feel (another thing I would change if I planned to keep the car) Other:Griffin Radiator with Aux Fan (Automatic fan setting w/ manual switch). (set at 190')Upgraded Flowmaster ExhaustOriginal S/S WheelsPeriod Correct Firestone Redline wide ovals (Bias Ply)Some after market gauges – Monster Tach - Oil/Water/Voltage – Can be easily Replaced Removed About Me (Conclusion):I bought this car as a short term investment and to enjoy at a couple shows toward the end of the summer. I've bought and sold classics in the past and will continue to do so. I spent some time with the car, having the red ss stripes correctly put on. I also had the paint wet-sanded and rubbed and changed out a few simple things like putting on a correct shift knob. If I was to keep the car longer I would have had the rear trim replaced, possibly add a new wood steering wheel, change the tires to radials, have the rear antenna removed, etc, etc, etc.. With all of that said, Here is a great chance to own a true SS which any new owner will have no problem enjoying “as-is” from both an aesthetic and mechanical standpoint. It’s all there. If you are a restoration hobbyist, you could enjoy this Chevelle as an investment that you could decide to bring to a new level of restoration (which would take very little). Whichever you choose, you can’t go wrong with one of America’s most iconic muscle cars. The car is available for inspection upon appointment (Independence Township, MI). Don’t hesitate to shoot me an email if you would like me to contact you personally to discuss the car in further detail or go over any of the codes/numbers for you. Please do not bid until you have all of your questions/concerns addressed. I require a deposit of $500.00 within two days of the auction close. Good luck on your bidding!
