Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is my 1975 BMW R90 /6 bike with a Chang Yang sidecar attached. Bike has 41,870 miles on it. I put around 5,000 of those miles on it. Rig was purchased two and a half years ago by me and I’m the fourth owner, I’m told. Sidecar has been attached for last 18 years at the least, likely more. Bike shows wear and is NOT a show bike – I bought it to ride and enjoy. I’ve cleaned it off, polished it a bit, changed fluids, adjusted the valves, changed tires/tubes, changed spark plugs and batteries, and have performed other basic upkeep to it. I added the windshield on bike and it can be easily removed. Engine runs well, usual small oil seepage. Previous owner removed choke, so each Bing carb is choked by pulling up small, thick wires attached. However, I have the lever for the choke, so you’d just need the cables. I added front turn signals and mounted in an improvised way, not using BMW turn signal holders. Right rear turn signal broke off, but that’s what the sidecar turn signal is for. Tachometer hasn’t worked since I bought the bike. Left hand control unit is held steady with cable straps as screw-hole broke off. Light switch failed a year ago and I just replaced with a toggle switch under left controls (see photo) so there’s no high beam right now. Kill switch hasn’t worked since I bought the rig, so it turns off with the key. The tank has a small dent under BMW roundel on right side. Large, loud horn replaces smaller original horn. Bike fenders have some scratches and rubs on them and tank has small scratches. The bike seat is not hinged, but held down with previous owner’s brackets. I added the Krauser saddle bags and mounts, which go with the rig. Bags show wear with some scratches; no keys to bag latches. The bike needs a new rear tire to ride and the front tire will need replacing in a while. The rig was recently aligned by a local bike shop. Mechanic there said I need new fork seals, but I don’t see any leaking and it rides the same to me as it always has done. Now to the sidecar – it’s a Chang Yang sidecar, copied from the Ural. I added the Ural windshield immediately after buying the rig. It makes a big difference for the passenger. Sidecar seat is padded well and comfortable as is the bike seat (previous owner had both redone) and has two small rips in it (see photo). There’s a three-point harness for the passenger seat. I added a phone charger plug to the sidecar. Previous owner replaced running light with a more powerful running light. I added a toggle switch under the seat to turn it on/off. This saves on electricity needed to start the bike. The sidecar turn signals and brake lights were replaced with VW Beetle lights, so the sidecar is much more visible at night and brake lights more visible in daytime. As photos show, the paint on the sidecar is coming off and cracking. It needs to be touched up or totally stripped and redone, but I don’t have the facilities or tools to do that. Sidecar trunk can be locked with external lock. Trunk is same size as Ural and gives lots of room for errands or travels. The sidecar tire needs to be replaced to ride. I’m trying to be as honest as I can about this rig. Once you put two new tires on it, you can take it riding. Any other work you want to perform on it is up to you. I had intended to slowly fix this rig up, but other matters have taken precedence. I’ve seen other rigs of similar make on the web and a lot of them are much more pristine and eye-catching, but if you are willing or able to fix up a sidecar rig, then this might be what you’ve been waiting for. Bike is sold “as is” and buyer takes responsibility for shipping or picking it up. If you need additional information, please message me.
