Vehicle Detail

HISTORY: General Motors introduced Woody wagons in 1939 through its divisions at Chevrolet, Pontiac and Oldsmobile. The hand built wood body construction of birch, ash or mahogany was contracted to companies such as Hercules, Iona and Cantrell. The Woody wagons developed a popular following due to their utility and passenger capacity. At the close of World War Two American automakers ceased production of wartime goods and resumed production of civilian vehicles. In 1946 Chevrolet introduced the Fleetmaster series which included the Woodie wagon. The power came from a sturdy 216 cubic inch six cylinder engine and a three speed transmission. Some of the options available in the Fleetmaster series were radios, fog lamps, heaters, defrosters, bumper and wheel trim. Unfortunately as demand increased the wood coachbuilders could not keep up with production and in 1949 Chevrolet switched all metal construction for its passenger wagons ending the era of true wood construction wagons. The 1946-1948 Chevrolet Woody wagons represent the last years of true wood construction wagons. In 1949 Chevrolet switched to all metal construction for their station wagons and any wood was merely a decorative trim element. In 1947 only 4,912 Woodie passenger wagons were built by Chevrolet.
