WATCH TO THE END FOR A TEST DRIVE.When you're looking for a truck that will get the job done and still be able to go through a drive-thru, you look no further than the legendary Ford F250 Super Duty. This particular '03 Super Duty is the Lariat model so it's not a stripped-down work truck. This is a two-owner truck that has spent its entire life here in the South so it has NO RUST. The Lariat package means it includes all the power goodies plus leather, spray-in bedliner, and more plus it's been upgraded with a Billet grille, big LT315/65 Hankook tires, and it also has the camper package. We really like the color-keyed window and bug guards that add some extra style to it. It's loaded with all the power goodies including keyless entry and keypad among many other items. It's had a fresh EGR and Oil cooler replacement done a couple years ago to the tune of over $3,000! Best of all, it's just been shopped and had a brand new radiator installed as well as a FICM, fuel pump, and fuel pressure regulator. It starts right up and runs perfect hot or cold! The previous owner of this truck spared no expense to keep it in perfect operating condition! Don't let the 165k miles worry you...on a properly maintained truck like this one it just means it's barely broken-in. We've had similar trucks with over 600k on the original engine. It starts right up hot or cold and runs great the whole time. Doesn't use any coolant or smoke either. This one was recently traded-in at the local Ford dealership on a new one. They send everything over 100k to auction so we were able to get a great deal on it. The seats underneath are in great shape with no rips or tears. It's clearly spent most of its time on the highway. We've put alot of miles on this truck ourselves and wouldn't hesitate to get in this truck and drive it ANYWHERE. Feel free to fly in and drive it home to whereever home may be. We'll be glad to pick you up at the airport at no extra charge or we'll work with the shipper of your choice to have it transported. We need to sell so we've set a LOW RESERVE on this truck that is THOUSANDS BELOW the book value of over $15,000!!! Yes, it's powered by the 6.0 diesel, but no worries because it runs PERFECT. The FICM has been replaced with a brand new Ford unit and both the EGR & oil coolers are fresh too. The coolant/oil temps are right where they should be idling or pulling. It also has GOOD TIRES. I had the 6.0 guru at my local Ford dealer go over it top to bottom and it has ZERO ISSUES! Once you get one of these 6.0 engines set up properly they are really the only way to go. Buy a 6.4 and you'll be replacing the radiator every 50,000 miles or more at $1200/apiece or you'll have to worry that if the previous owner didn't change the oil every 5,000 miles then thanks to the DPF you wind up with 5 extra quarts of fuel in the crankcase thinning out the oil and causing rocker box issues. 7.3s are nice but they're all miled out or if you find a lower mileage one they'll ask you $20,000 and it won't have nearly the option list this one does. General Motors and Dodge have introduced new and significantly better heavy duty pickups, engines and transmissions offering consumers more choices than they have ever had before. Ford, the perennial volume leader in the segment, could be accused of lagging behind the others. So when we received an invite out to Bullhead City, Arizona to test drive Ford's 2003 Super Duty trucks we were a bit skeptical about its capabilities versus the competition. Now Ford is reintroducing the Super Duty, at four years old the eldest of the heavy duty pickups, with an all-new transmission, a smaller 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel replacing the venerable 7.3-liter Power Stroke plus a few other new mid-cycle updates. With Ford selling every Super Duty it can pump out, 65% of which are diesels, we had to wonder just why Ford picked now to introduce a new diesel powertrain. The Kentucky production plant where the Super Duty originates is one of the most productive full size truck plants among the Big Three, producing nearly 70 trucks per hour with nearly 1 billion possible combinations. But competitive pressures aren't the only forces pushing Ford to make this seemingly radical change. Federal regulations are also a factor. Navistar, Ford's Power Stroke diesel engine supplier, had to sign a 1998 government consent decree requiring compliance with 2004 emission standards by October of this year. The consent decree settled EPA allegations that domestic diesel engine manufacturers produced engines that utilized a modified fuel management algorithm than the algorithm provided during certification testing. The result: higher nitrogen oxide emissions than the levels that were certified. To comply with the consent decree 7.3-liter Power Stroke production has been stopped and replaced completely by production of the new 6.0-liter Power Stroke, which meets the new emissions mandates. The end result for Ford and 2003 Super Duty owners is that on paper and in real-life the 6.0-liter Power Stroke provides noticeably improved performance, emits fewer emissions and delivers an 8-10% improvement in fuel economy over the 7.3-liter Power Stroke it replaces. Ford engineers were not satisfied with just beating their own diesel, they also demanded segment leading performance as well but more on this later when we discuss our driving impressions. With a class leading 325-horsepower and 560lb-ft of torque, the 6.0-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel engine is a marvel of design and engineering. "This engine has been over 5 years in the making," according to Super Duty Marketing Manager Tim Stoehr. Several technologies play heavily in the new Power Stroke's construction. The electronic variable response turbocharger (EVRT) on the Power Stroke uses a set of pivoting vanes that surround the turbine to optimize and control an almost infinitely adjustable airflow to the turbo compressor. When traveling at high speeds, climbing steep grades or at altitude the vanes close together to route more airflow through the turbine. At low speeds the vanes open to provide better engine response. Generation 2 (G2) fuel injectors are combined with increased hydraulic rail fuel injection pressures to better manage fuel before it enters the Power Stroke's combustion chambers. G2's smaller injectors allow enough room to accommodate four valves per cylinder, two more than the 7.3-liter Power Stroke had. The combination of higher fuel pressure and four valves per cylinder better atomizes the fuel air mixture for improved combustion, resulting in a quieter engine, reduced emissions and increased fuel economy. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) routes a predetermined amount of the exhaust gas into a cooler where the exhaust gas temperature is lowered. The cooled exhaust gas is then mixed in the combustion chamber with fresh air and fuel. The result is lower Nitrogen Oxide emissions. To help with maintenance a top mounted oil filter is accessible and easily replaced during normal oil change service. "The cartridge-type oil filter is modeled after the toner cartridge you might find in a laser printer," said Stoehr. The placement of the filter is important to those of us that prefer to do our own maintenance. The Super Dutys we drove were equipped with the all-new, optional 5-speed TorqShift automatic transmission. The TorqShift was designed lock-in-step with the Power Stroke and is a direct response to the Allison 5-speed offered on the Silverado and Sierra HD pickups from GM. It's no wonder that the TorqShift and Allison have very similar ratios. Dodge does not offer a comparable transmission on its trucks. See chart below: Gear Position TorqShift 5-Speed Allison 5-Speed First Gear 3.09 to 1 3.10 to 1 Second Gear 2.20 to 1 1.81 to 1 Third Gear 1.54 to 1 1.41 to 1 Fourth Gear 1.00 to 1 1.00 to 1 Fifth Gear .71 to 1 .71 to 1 Reverse 2.88 to 1 4.49 to 1 When comparing these transmissions on paper the Allison and Ford are nearly identical in first gear. The fourth and fifth gears are identical with the Ford TorqShift having the advantage in the critical second gear and a slight advantage in third. The Allison has the advantage in reverse which is important when backing heavy trailers up or down steep grades. The TorqShift is a dramatic improvement for Ford Super Duty truck buyers and the results are immediately noticeable while driving. The shifts from this transmission are firm, without being too firm, and nearly imperceptible. We drove 6 different Super Duties over a 10 hour period. The vehicles included 4 different pickups and as riders in two Excursions. In every case the TorqShift shifts were the same, firm while being nearly transparent. This shift feel was no accident and is the result of Direct Electronic Shift Control (DESC). DESC uses computer controlled solenoids to control the shifting of the TorqShift. In designing this transmission the key was to make the shifts fast and firm without the bumps that are normally associated with automatic transmissions. Those bumps are caused by a delay in filling the transmission clutch pack. The TorqShift addresses this problem by leaving the clutch pack full and then applying pressure and, of course more, fluid to the clutch pack when a shift is required. This pre-filling of the clutch pack provides for nearly seamless shifts both on the way up and on the way down. Speaking of the way down, like the Allison the TorqShift also offers drivers a tow/haul mode to assist with grade braking during trailering descents; but the TorqShift's transmission feels more intuitive. The Allison analyzes brake pressure, throttle position and road speed to determine when a downshift should occur. The TorqShift also analyzes brake pressure, throttle position and factors in road speed like the Allison, with the addition of a second detent in the brake pedal that tells the transmission to downshift faster. We tested using both the Allison and TorqShift transmissions in tow/haul mode using 7,000 pound trailers on a descent that varied between 3% to 6%. The trucks compared were a Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD SRW 4x4 Crew Cab Duramax and a Ford F-350 Super Duty DRW 4x4 Power Stroke. The results: the TorqShift's tow/haul mode was a pleasure to drive, aptly helping us to control and hold the speed of our descent smoothly and with the minimum amount of extra braking. Press the brake moderately once and its shifts down a gear. Press again and it drops another. Press with more force and you can drop up to two gears as the tow/haul mode interprets your request for extra braking assistance. All of the downshifts were as smooth as the up shifts and seemed to come just as needed. Compared to the Allison transmission available for our tests, the TorqShift consistently performed better. All and all if the Ford engineers benchmarked the Allison then they have at least for now built a better performing transmission. And diesel truck buyers should love this competition, it brings out the best from everyone involved. To sum up our impression of the TorqShift: Smooth, capable and intelligent performance. Ford has invited us to come to the Livonia, MI to learn more about the TorqShift and do a comparison with the Allison. We will report on the visit later this year so stay tuned. But downhill testing of these trucks wasn't all we did. We flew into Las Vegas for the drive out to Bullhead City and picked up a dark shadow gray metallic Ford F-350 Super Duty Crew Cab 4x4 dually to make the 100 mile trip. Its many features included optional Sport and FX4 packages. The Sport Package includes chrome tipped 3-inch exhaust pipe, monochromatic sport grille, chrome side steps and unique front and rear bumpers. The FX4 off-road option is new on Super Dutys for 2003 and adds Rancho shocks, skid plates and a steering damper to the base 4x4 package. Our F-350 also had a moonroof, a Ford exclusive in the heavy duty segment, and a 6 disc in-dash CD changer. Starting up the F-350, it was our first chance to build hands-on impressions around the new Power Stroke and TorqShift. The engine fired up with a tighter and quieter clatter than what we were used to hearing from the 7.3-liter Power Stroke. When we were inside the truck with all of the doors closed the clatter was reduced even more thanks to Ford's aggressive cabin noise insulation efforts. Pulling out onto the street we immediately pulled up next to a raised 2002 F-350 4x4 at a stoplight. Sure it was a coincidence but a purposeful comparison couldn't have been staged any better because we certainly heard the clatter of the other F-350's 7.3-liter Power Stroke much more loudly in the cabin of our truck than we heard our own 6.0-liter engine. Ride and handling has also been unexpectedly improved and refined. Having driven many Super Duty trucks over the years the ride quality jumped out at us. The feel from the steering wheel was firm and positive with very little shake or any other vibrations at all. Ford engineers on-hand attributed this to time well spent increasing the amount of rubber in the body mounts to improve isolation. The confidence that the ride and steering feel inspired proved to be valuable on the trip across state route 95 from Las Vegas to Laughlin. Driving on state route 95 we quickly found ourselves stacked up behind big rigs, motor homes and blue hairs headed back to Sun City having lost the remainder of this month's social security check at the $1 slots. It was the perfect opportunity to test unloaded performance and the Power Stroke did not fail to meet the high performance expectations set by Stoehr. We have driven some very powerful vehicles as part of media tests but never one this powerful. The press information says that the new Power Stroke performs much like a gas engine. We are sorry to disappoint the Ford engineers that worked so hard on this engine, but if we had a gas engine that ran the way the Power Stroke runs we would never ever consider a diesel.Note to the Nevada State Police: we almost never exceeded the posted speed limit of 65 MPH, and if you saw a dark shadow gray crew cab over 90 it must have been someone else. Passing two to three cars at once was easy as we moved into the other lane, quickly accelerated and merged back. Oh, did you know that the Ford 6.0-liter Power Stroke Super Duty has a top speed limiter at 98 MPH? And the Power Stroke shows no sign of diesel fade all the way up to near the century mark we were told by another media tester that was willing to try. At 65 MPH the interior of the Power Stroke was as quiet as many passenger cars. Conversation was easy even with the A/C blasting at max. You can't imagine you are in a diesel until you slow down to about 20 MPH when the clatter finally starts to return to the cabin. We arrived in Bullhead City across the Colorado River from Laughlin, Nevada, a gambling town that looks like an ultra condensed version of Las Vegas if you subjected Vegas to the 26,000psi compression pressures of the Power Stroke's hydraulic rail fuel injectors. There we swapped pickups for competitive vehicle tests between trucks towing 7,000 pound trailers up a grade of between 5% to about 7%. A Chevrolet Silverado with two people took off about two minutes before Stoehr and the two of us jumped into a monochromatic red F-350 Sport dually with a 3.73 gear ratio. A Dodge Ram had left even earlier than the Silverado. (The trucks pictured above are the 1/4-mile drag trucks, not the same as what we did the hill climb with. Like the drag trucks, all the hill climb trucks had similar gearing and powertrain configurations. - Mike) With the other trucks ahead of us by about half a mile we started chasing after them. The hill is about 10 miles long so we had plenty of time to catch and pass the Dodge, equipped with a standard 5.9-liter Cummins I6 turbo diesel and 4-speed automatic, within about 2 miles from the start of the hill. Near as we could tell the speed difference was approximately 18 MPH as we were moving at about 78 MPH. In a later test when we drove the Dodge ourselves we found its maximum speed was 60 MPH with the accelerator down to the floor the entire climb. That's a significant speed difference. For people upset that we didn't get to run the new 5.9-liter High Output Cummins I6 engine against the Power Stroke or the Duramax, consider the following limitations of the HO Cummins. The HO Cummins is only available with a manual transmission. About 90% of Power Stroke sales are automatics. The HO Cummins fails to meet California emissions and that of two other states. The Power Stroke not only meets California emissions but as we stated earlier it also meets 2004 federal requirements. We think there will be lots of buyers in California (the most populous state in the union) who are going to walk out of Dodge dealerships disappointed after being told the HO Cummins is not for sale. If Navistar could do this with a diesel, so could Cummins. The automatic 5.9-liter Cummins I6 from the factory is not up to the challenge of the Duramax or the Power Stroke. And for the record, we did ask Dodge for a High Output Cummins about a month and a half before this drive but were unable to get the vehicle delivered in time. One last note about Dodge. Expect to see a new automatic transmission offered in the heavy duty Rams for 2004 that will work in tandem with the High Output Cummins. We will be watching closely to learn more about its capabilities and would enjoy running the same tests again at that time. Next up on the hill climb was the Chevrolet with some noticable advantages over the Ford. It was a 2003 short bed crew cab single rear wheel with a 6.6-liter Duramax and 5-speed Allison automatic and should have weighed less than the Super Duty. The Silverado also had a 1-mile head start on the 10-mile grade. The Super Duty reeled in the Duramax in less than 3 miles and then passed with ease. We were so surprised and thought that the Silverado driver did not know we were trying to catch him that we slowed down to 45 MPH to let the Chevrolet catch up to us. We later found out the driver was on the pedal all the way up the hill. As the Silverado caught up to the back bumper of our trailer we stepped on the pedal and tried to keep it from passing. We are sorry to say that we could not keep the Chevrolet from passing - for long. Before the trailer of the Chevrolet was able to clear the front bumper of the Super Duty we were already catching and then passing the Chevrolet again. You might think that in some way that we cheated so we went back to the hill with all three trucks and ran the test again ourselves. Mike was in the Dodge and Tom was in the Chevrolet (surprise) and a Ford engineer was in the Ford. The results were the same. We tried to make the Ford Super Duty with the Power Stroke and the TorqShift lose and we just could not do it. And sound levels in the cabin of the Super Duty never went above 73dB the entire climb. How's that for quiet performance? The last head to head contest we performed before heading back to Vegas was a ¼-mile drag race with 12,000 pound trailers. The results were the same each and every time. The Ford 6.0 Liter Power Stroke won and won by a noticeable amount, finishing the ¼-mile in just over 23 seconds during the best run of the day. If you laid the results out first through third, the Chevrolet would beat the Dodge and the Power Stroke beat both. We were able to shoot some amateur and we mean amateur video of the drag races and once we get them edited we will post them for you to view. Driving back to Las Vegas we left in an F-350 King Ranch Edition Super Duty. The King Ranch is new to the Super Duty Line for 2003 and adds rich Castano saddle leather to the seating surfaces and wood trim to the doors. Unfortunately the dash gets left behind and receives no wood or special trim, contrasting sharply with the rest of the interior. Body colored telescoping tow mirrors are also included and add a touch of class to the outside of the truck. Again the performance was outstanding on the highway but we had one last test to do. Craig Renneker, a Ford automatic transmission engineer who rode back with us, dared us to shift into reverse at 60 MPH going downhill. Uh, say what Craig? Ok, if you say so. With only a minor hiccup the transmission shifted into neutral and didn't even stall the engine! An amazing demonstration of the TorqShift's capabilities. Our apologies if there were any tailgaters behind us as the reverse lights came on because as we looked in our rear view mirror after getting back into drive there was nothing but empty road behind us. At the end of the day we were totally surprised by the performance of the 2003 Ford Super Duty. Its new 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine and TorqShift transmission provide class leading performance capabilities and refinement unmatched by competitors in today's heavy duty pickups. We'd like to run these drives again in the near future the way that people actually use their trucks - testing the performance of the Ford, GM and Dodge trucks including the High Output Cummins with fifth wheel travel trailers and heavy equipment trailers in several situations including mountain driving and flat out up hill towing. When we talk about who's King of the Ranch we aren't necessarily talking about the 2003 Ford Super Dutys. Really it's heavy duty truck shoppers who are King of the Ranch because as consumers they benefit from the outstanding selection of trucks found on dealer lots today. And don't expect General Motors and Dodge to stand still for a second, they want to be King of the Ranch too, just not today. Now the fine print... We understand you are buying online, but with us you are not buying blind! We handwrite every single description. We provide 24+ high resolution pictures & we inspect and photo what you see and what you can't see. We'll also be glad to email you detailed, closeup pictures of any area you'd like to see more of. People ask us all the time what is the catch to our vehicles. They assume that the prices are low because there is something wrong with them. Nothing could be further from the truth! Our secret is simple...LOW OVERHEAD. We are an internet-only dealer. We do not maintain regular office hours or a large sales facility. We simply have a Mississippi bonded dealer's license, a storage lot, and a computer. Since we don't have dozens of mechanics, helpers, salesmen, secretaries, etc. on our payroll; we are able to sell at greatly reduced prices. You will notice that we sometimes go with private auctions. Our reasons are twofold...the latest scam is to send bogus 2nd chance offers to customers from a fake email address in an attempt to scam them out of money. With a private auction the scammers won't know who our bidders are so if you get a 2nd chance offer from us you will know that it is the real deal! In addition, we set our reserves to sell which upsets other sellers! In fact, sometimes we set our reserve $1,000 or more below what our cost is. This leads other sellers to email our customers and knock our product! We will provide the winning bidder, upon request, with a complete bid history including the usernames & bid amounts of all other bidders. All new or low feedback (under 5 positives) bidders must first email us for no other reason than just to make contact. This way we know we have serious bidders! If you don't make contact we will cancel your bid and black you out from future bidding. We do this to avoid the de@dbe@t bidders, so please respect our policy. If you have a rating of 5 or better you don't have to email us. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy our site and add us to your favorites, because you just never know when your dream vehicle will pop up!!! We've put this vehicle through our EXTENSIVE inspection process & can report it has a great ride & drive! We do our best to let you know of any/all issues we can find on these vehicles since you're buying sight-unseen. There are a couple small spots where the clear is peeling. Not even the size of your thumbnail but we're trying to nitpick. WATCH THE VIDEO. If you have any specific questions then don't hesitate to call us email us. Please understand we do our best to describe, in detail, every vehicle we offer to the Ebay public. However, if you have any hesitation during the bidding period, please obtain a Buyer's Inspection PRIOR TO PLACING YOUR BID to satisfy yourself. After the auction ends, understand you are the legal winning bidder of this auction and agree to all our Terms and Conditions. Be sure and take a look at the book values on this vehicle (or any other we have for sale) before you bid. We stopped offering a built-in BuyIt Now option due to ebay's policy of letting anyone with an email address register a username. We had half a dozen de@dbe@t bidders in a row hit the BIN with no intention of paying. We do have a BuyIt Now price so give us a call if you're interested. Make sure you call us for more information on this vehicle. As always though, our reserve is THOUSANDS less than NADA value so bid early & bid often so you don't miss out! Don't be outbid at the last minute! With the eBay proxy bidding system all you have to do is enter the maximum amount you're willing to pay when you get ready to bid. Ebay will then automatically bid against other people for you up to that amount to help make sure you don't miss out. This saves you from getting sniped in the last few seconds of an auction by someone with a computer program. Don't try and bid in small increments at the last minute...go ahead & bid the full amount you're willing to pay then let eBay do the hard work! This vehicle is for sale locally so we must reserve the right to end the auction early due to local sale. However, once the reserve is met then we will let the auction run its course & sell to the high bidder. Now for the fine print... Terms of Sale Fee and Tax Information: MS Residents Must Pay The 5% State Sales Tax on all motorized vehicles (7% on anything else such as campers, travel trailers, etc.) and a $100 Title/Doc Fee. All Other U.S. Buyers Will Pay Their Own State Taxes Themselves In Their Home State. All other bidders pay only a $49 Documentation Fee in addition to the winning bid. This covers our costs for a notary, Fedex charges, and other paperwork. Lousiana, Canadian and other foreign buyers must pay a $99 Documentation Fee to cover the extra Fedex and other expenses associated with doing international (and Cajun) paperwork. We do have Mississippi temporary tags available if you desire one for an additional $50. However, we've sent hundreds of RVs all over the country without them & nobody has ever had an issue driving home. Winning bidder MUST contact us within 24 hours of auction end and make arrangements for payment at that time. Balance due within 5 days of auction end. This is due to the large number of de@dbeat bidders out there. If no contact is made within 24 hours we reserve the right to re-list the vehicle, sell it to the next high bidder, or otherwise dispose of it. PLEASE arrange your own financing prior to bidding. De@dbeat bidders WILL receive negative feedback & be reported to ebay. Payment Must Be Made VIA Cashier's Check, Bank-to-Bank Wire Transfer, or Cash (in person). We must be able to verify funds prior to vehicle delivery. Generally we have almost all titles on hand. Our business hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday (CST). Please arrange your flight times accordingly. We are more than happy to provide free pickup during normal business hours. We no longer will deliver vehicles after-hours or on weekends. Occasionally things pop up like a blown fuse or a headlight going out and after hours a mechanic isn't there to fix it. We will store your vehicle up to 90 days free, however you must provide full coverage insurance & pay in full. We will not be responsible for damage or theft while in storage here. Our insurance policy will not allow it. If you are not sure about something, Please ASK. Do not assume anything not listed is included. We reserve the right to cancel bids for excessive negative feedback. We reserve the right to end the listing if the vehicle is no longer available for sale. Please make sure that the contact information (email address and phone number) in your ebay profile is up to date. If you're email bounces back on us then we will block you from further bids until you call us. Occasionally we may call to verify a bidder is legitimate. If we can't reach you then we reserve the right to cancel your bid. Please do not bid on this auction unless you are serious about owning this vehicle. We spend approximately $150 per listing. This is how we make our living. All non-paying high bidders will be reported to Ebay, and negative feedback posted. We are not one of those sellers who is afraid to leave bad feedback where it is due even at the risk of receiving it ourselves in return(one of the major flaws in eBay's feedback system). You can look at our "feedback left for others" page for proof. PLEASE ONLY BID WHAT YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY. IF THE RESERVE IS NOT MET, WE MAY CONTACT THE HIGH BIDDER TO OFFER THE SECOND CHANCE OPTION.
