When you're in the market for a loaded-up truck that looks as good going to the theater as it does going through the hedgerows, look no further than the GMC Sierra. It has long been known for setting the standard in luxury and capability. This '02 SLT model is no exception. It's packed with pretty much every possible option you could order such as the Quadrasteer four wheel steering system. It turns the rear wheels along with the front to give you a drastically decreased turning radius as well as better/safer handling especially when towing a trailer. Developed by Delphi Automotive Systems, the rear-wheel-steer application uses a heavy-duty Dana axle with a dedicated computer controller under the bed, protected by the spare tire. The system has a heavy-duty spring-loaded fail-safe preset in case power is lost, pushing both wheels into straight alignment. The advantages of the system are easily seen when compared to other vehicles. If you demand total steering compliance from a tow vehicle, along with stability and maneuverability from what's being towed, the GMC Sierra with Quadrasteer is just the ticket. Developed jointly by GM and Delphi Automotive Systems, Quadrasteer (a rear-wheel-steering system for trucks) is a standard feature on the '02 Sierra Denali pickup and soon to be on other GMC products. By using various sensors around the vehicle, a microprocessor computes the correct rear-wheel position and actuates an electric motor to turn it accordingly. Below 45 mph, the rear wheels can steer up to 12 (left or right). At these speeds, the rear wheels turn in the direction opposite the fronts. Above 40 mph, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the fronts to significantly limit the pivoting a trailer feels at the hitch. Forty-five mph is a neutral zone, where the rear wheels maintain a fairly straight-ahead position even when the front wheels are turned. When in the 4WS Tow Mode (recommended for towing), the speed of the neutral zone is reduced by the microprocessor to 25 mph. Visually, rear-wheel turn appears modest, but the amount they do turn yields dramatic performance dividends. WATCH THE VIDEO Moving past that, this truck has all the other luxury goodies you want nowadays such as heated leather seats, overhead console, plush automatic ride control, and more! It's not just a grocery getter...with the Z71OffRoad package combined with the 2WD/4WD/AWD system, it can get the job done off pavement as well as on. If you're driving on icy roads or in bad weather, activate the All Wheel Drive system for enhanced safety and traction. 4WD comes in when you get off road and out into the dirt or the rest of the time leave it in 2wd mode for better economy. This truck can really do it all! Don't let the 281k on the odometer worry you, this is a nice truck that has been well-kept and well-maintained. One look at the driver seat bottom cushion will tell you that it has spent the vast majority of its life out on the highway. It cranks right up hot or cold and shifts out perfectly. Drives down the road just like it should too. We would not hesitate to fly in and drive this one home to wherever that may be without any worries. Best of all, we got a great buy on this truck that we're passing along to you in the form of a LOW RESERVE that is well over TEN THOUSAND BELOW the book value of nearly $33,000!!! What's Quadrasteer? It's the return of four-wheel steering, a fad on import-brand cars sold in the USA in the late 1980s and early '90s until automakers realized it was the answer to a question nobody asked. "How hard is it, anyway, to turn a Honda Prelude," says Sam Mancuso, Sierra brand manager. But it can be hard, indeed, to dock a full-size truck, and that's why General Motors thinks it has found the right platform for the technology. Quadrasteer is electronic, using sensors and an electric steering motor in back to turn the rear wheels opposite the fronts at low speed, the same direction at higher speed. No steering shaft runs front to rear, just wires. Q-steer forces enough changes that Sierra Denali is nearly a new model compared with the '01 Sierra C3 that preceded it. To accommodate the steering mechanism built into the rear axle and the angles the rear tires must turn without chafing against springs or the frame, the Sierra Denali is a hippy 5 inches wider at the rear tires than other GM pickups. That requires flared rear fenders. Those, in turn, stick out enough to require amber and red clearance lights, like on commercial rigs. What's with the huge price increase? Quadrasteer. It's not just a trifling bit of hardware. It also requires a different suspension and heavy-duty rear-end parts. What's with the name? Last year, the truck was called C3. Mancuso says that nobody had heard of C3, while a lot of people have heard of Denali. The name's been on GMC's top models for several years and, apparently, successfully marketed. From now on, all GMC's top-end machines will be Something-or-other Denali. How does Quadrasteer work? Wonderfully, but the extra girth is nettlesome. One guy who'd agree was on the shoulder of Interstate 75 here, beside his disabled economy car. He looked up, saw the Denali coming, screamed so loudly he could be heard inside the truck and leapt onto the hood of his small car. There was plenty of clearance, but it must have looked otherwise. Watching the mirrors showed the Denali's wide rear fenders came close to things parking and in normal driving, but there was, thank goodness, no scraping. A hint of how sweet Quadrasteer works came in an impromptu parking lot test here. When the dashboard switch was punched to 2WS (for two-wheel steering), the Sierra Denali circled widely around a trash bin in the center of the snowy lot. Punched into 4WS, the truck turned sharply enough that it didn't get to the trash bin, let alone have to circumnavigate. GMC says Quadrasteer cuts Denali's turning-circle diameter to 37.4 feet from 46.2 feet. GMC likes to note that the small Saturn coupe circles in 37.1 feet. Q-steer is mighty helpful while: Parking. Berthing a big pickup in a commercial lot or garage usually means seeking two or three empty spaces together so you can swing wide and maneuver without mishap. Forget that entirely with Quadrasteer. Nosing in the big Denali is no more troublesome than parking a midsize family sedan. You don't realize how much allowance you've been making to park a pickup until Q-steer shows how little there need be. Remember, though, the back fenders stick out, so you have to ease the last few feet eyeing the mirrors. Driving. 4WS eases the on-center twitchiness typical of GM trucks. The 540-mile run here from Virginia in an '02 Chevrolet Tahoe sport-utility vehicle was a satisfying delight — except for all the jiggling on the steering wheel to keep pointed straight ahead. The 540-mile drive back home on the same roads in the Denali was less tiring and annoying because the truck stayed centered better when 4WS was operating. The 5-inch-wider rear track might have something to do with that. 4WS makes the big rig more precise and pleasant to sling through curves, too, if that's your idea of truckin' fun. Quadrasteer is the product of Delphi, formerly owned by GM. It's been in development since 1992 and got a boost when GMC approached the parts supplier three years ago with promises of big volumes and a use that makes sense. GMC has the feature to itself a few months, then shares with corporate cousin Chevrolet. Chevy plans to start Q-steer on Silverado 1500 extended-cab, short-bed, standard-duty pickups in the spring. Then it goes onto other full-size GM trucks in the '03 model year, when the full-size pickups get styling and interior changes and pickup-based SUVs get interior enhancements. Chevy will announce specifics at the Chicago auto show early next month. Delphi's not supposed to sell Quadrasteer to a non-GM car company for two years to give GM a big head start. So what about the rest of the truck? Another new feature is ride control — normal or firm — via a dashboard button. Firm is so stiff and jiggly, you'll never use it in normal driving. In fact, normal has its stiff moments, too, mainly in the rear. 2002 GMC Sierra Denali Program #2110 Episode 2110 Making the move from a car to a full-size truck, like this GMC Sierra Denali, is usually perceived as a move to more of everything. More room, more power and more safety. But it also means less of some things, namely the highway agility and ease of parking that car drivers take for granted. At least it used to, until the engineers at GMC decided to even the odds. Those ‘‘odds’’ have been evened with a handy new four-wheel steering system called Quadrasteer. And, this new take on an oft kicked around idea, has put the new 2002 GMC Sierra Denali, formerly known as the Sierra C3, on nearly equal ground with a compact car! Engineered by parts giant Delphi Automotive, Quadrasteer works like this. Under the rear of the Sierra Denali is a steerable solid hypoid axle. A central electronic control module gathers information from front steering position and vehicle speed sensors, and feeds it to the electric motor that controls the rear axle steering mechanism. This information enables the rear steering unit to operate in one of three phases. At low speeds, a negative phase, in which the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels, is in effect. This phase aids parking and tight maneuvering. At moderate speeds, the rear wheels remain straight, or in a neutral phase, just like a conventional pickup. At higher speeds, the rear wheels enter a positive phase, turning in the same direction as the front wheels. This phase improves the safety of lane changes and avoidance maneuvers. It does so by reducing the vehicle’s ‘‘yaw’’ or rotational motion. The 5 inch wider track at the rear helps too. The driver can also manually select one of three driving modes with dash-mounted controls. Conventional two-wheel steer, four-wheel steer, as just described, or four-wheel steer/TOW mode, which changes the front to rear steering bias somewhat for easier towing. The advantages in the Sierra Denali’s Quadrasteer are many. For one, there’s the obvious added zippiness to parking lot and other low speed chores. We can’t remember the last time we had this much fun taking a full size pickup truck through our low speed slalom. Our drivers noted there’s still plenty of front end push, and some wished the still numb steering was quicker. But the Quadrasteer system definitely accelerated the pace through the cones. Quadrasteer also reduces the Sierra Denali’s turning radius by over 20 percent. Cutting it from 46.2 to 37.4 feet, or now about the same as Saturn’s smallest sedan. And for those who want to take advantage of the Sierra Denali’s now beefier 10,000 pound towing capacity, towing with Quadrasteer in action is like having a steerable axle mounted to the front of your trailer! And should any system failures be detected, Quadrasteer automatically reverts to two- wheel steering. But you’ll still have the added security of the Sierra Denali’s full-time all-wheel drive system which is also standard equipment on this premium pickup. And so is the ZX3 Ride Control suspension, with its two selectable modes of damping for the front and rear 46 millimeter shocks. The Sierra Denali gets its thrust from GM’s renowned family of Vortec engines. In particular, the 6.0 liter, OHV, V8 Vortec 6000. In the Sierra Denali, this cast iron block/aluminum head powerplant generates 325 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. All fed through a 4-speed automatic transmission with a tow/haul mode. At the strip, that was good for a neck-snapping run to 60 in just 7 seconds. The quarter mile passed in 15.4 seconds at 88 MPH. Our drivers noted that power seemed plentiful and bottomless, dropping off only slightly at the end of the quarter mile run. Apparently the weight penalty of the Quadrasteer’s rear axle is virtually meaningless when it comes to the Sierra’s get- up-and-go. And the added weight at the rear certainly doesn’t hurt when it comes to braking. As the large 12 inch front, 13 inch rear discs with ABS brought the Sierra Denali down from 60 in an average 133 feet. Our drivers loved the truck’s stability and smooth pedal feel, as well as the only moderate feedback from the ABS system. We heard mostly praises, too, about the Sierra Denali’s high level of interior comfort. As the Sierra Denali carries on the tradition of high lux premium trucking first established by its C3 predecessor. That means plenty of plush leather upholstery with power adjustable seats and heated seat bottoms and backs, and an adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant audio controls, a programmable driver information center with premium Bose audio system with 6-disc in-dash CD changer, as well as separate audio controls for rear seat passengers. In fact, the Sierra Denali comes fully loaded. And although pricing on the new Sierra Denali hasn’t been finalized, we don’t expect it to be a whole lot more that the $38,995 price attached to the current 2001 C3. The story of the 2002 GMC Sierra Denali can best be summed up by saying, ‘‘Quadrasteer is here,’’ and it works! And while it’s for now only available on this top-of-the-line truck, GM promises it won’t be long before it appears on other models as well. But for now, the front seat of this powerful and plush pickup is the only place to experience this new piece of cutting edge technology. And from our vantage point, it’s a great place to be. We understand you are buying online, but with us you are not buying blind! We handwrite every single description. We provide 24+ high resolution pictures & we inspect and photo what you see and what you can't see. We'll also be glad to email you detailed, closeup pictures of any area you'd like to see more of. People ask us all the time what is the catch to our vehicles. They assume that the prices are low because there is something wrong with them. Nothing could be further from the truth! Our secret is simple...LOW OVERHEAD. We are an internet-only dealer. We do not maintain regular office hours or a large sales facility. We simply have a Mississippi bonded dealer's license, a storage lot, and a computer. Since we don't have dozens of mechanics, helpers, salesmen, secretaries, etc. on our payroll; we are able to sell at greatly reduced prices. You will notice that we sometimes go with private auctions. Our reasons are twofold...the latest scam is to send bogus 2nd chance offers to customers from a fake email address in an attempt to scam them out of money. With a private auction the scammers won't know who our bidders are so if you get a 2nd chance offer from us you will know that it is the real deal! In addition, we set our reserves to sell which upsets other sellers! In fact, sometimes we set our reserve $1,000 or more below what our cost is. This leads other sellers to email our customers and knock our product! We will provide the winning bidder, upon request, with a complete bid history including the usernames & bid amounts of all other bidders. All new or low feedback (under 5 positives) bidders must first email us for no other reason than just to make contact. This way we know we have serious bidders! If you don't make contact we will cancel your bid and black you out from future bidding. We do this to avoid the de@dbe@t bidders, so please respect our policy. If you have a rating of 5 or better you don't have to email us. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy our site and add us to your favorites, because you just never know when your dream vehicle will pop up!!! We've put this vehicle through our EXTENSIVE inspection process & can report it has a great ride & drive! We do our best to let you know of any/all issues we can find on these vehicles since you're buying sight-unseen. There are some dings here and there, some rock pecks on the hood, and a bent rear bumper. WATCH THE VIDEO. If you have any specific questions then don't hesitate to call us email us. Please understand we do our best to describe, in detail, every vehicle we offer to the Ebay public. However, if you have any hesitation during the bidding period, please obtain a Buyer's Inspection PRIOR TO PLACING YOUR BID to satisfy yourself. After the auction ends, understand you are the legal winning bidder of this auction and agree to all our Terms and Conditions. Be sure and take a look at the book values on this vehicle (or any other we have for sale) before you bid. We stopped offering a built-in BuyIt Now option due to ebay's policy of letting anyone with an email address register a username. We had half a dozen de@dbe@t bidders in a row hit the BIN with no intention of paying. We do have a BuyIt Now price so give us a call if you're interested. Make sure you call us for more information on this vehicle. As always though, our reserve is THOUSANDS less than NADA value so bid early & bid often so you don't miss out! Don't be outbid at the last minute! With the eBay proxy bidding system all you have to do is enter the maximum amount you're willing to pay when you get ready to bid. Ebay will then automatically bid against other people for you up to that amount to help make sure you don't miss out. This saves you from getting sniped in the last few seconds of an auction by someone with a computer program. Don't try and bid in small increments at the last minute...go ahead & bid the full amount you're willing to pay then let eBay do the hard work! This vehicle is for sale locally so we must reserve the right to end the auction early due to local sale. However, once the reserve is met then we will let the auction run its course & sell to the high bidder.
