Vehicle Detail
Custom 1956 Fleetwood bodied LIMO. Running driving custom project. This is NOT a car with ONLY custom wheels added. This car was treated to a full chassis and suspension upgrade including a modern driveline. The reason was simple. Why add a modern fuel injected V8 to a 60 year old, outdated chassis from the cold war era? We wanted a dependable easy to drive and service fun vehicle. Why? We wanted something that we could drive everyday. Benefits of easy to get parts/maintain. More power but nothing over the top. The LT1 Chevrolet was the standard powerplant for the Corvette. If more power is needed minimal mods can be made. With EFI when the key is turned the car will start....and stay running. The 4 speed automatic means better take off and better fuel economy and higher more comfortable highway speeds. Better brakes including ABS and handeling. A security system with a smart key. How it was done? Simple. This project consisted of taking a 1996 Chrevrolet Caprice/Impalla SS and removed the body from the frame leaving the engine transmission and all the harness. The frame was lengthened and the factory body mounts were adjusted from the Caprice/Impalla SS to the Cadillac body. Then the Cadillac body simply bolted on like original. It wasn't that easy but thats it in a nutshell. The details: The column, harness including the interloc and smart key was left intact. The tilt column was installed and even the digital gauage cluster fit right into the Cadillac dash. Turn the key and the speedo reads 298 mph then to zero just like it should. It is too funny. When you leave the keys in the ignition switch it will chime! The original functioning systems from the Caprice/Impalla SS are incorporated into the Cadillac. The original glovebox trunk button from the Impala is in place in the Cadillac if you want to install a electric trunk opener. It starts runs and drives. Even the factory power windows and seat work as well as the lights and signals. To get the stance our donor already had 2" Bell Tech drop spindles along with Billstein shocks. We added new sway bar bushings and front brake pads, For EZ replacing the electric fuel pump the trunk pan was modified to add space by removing the tire well. An inspection cover was added. The bump in the floor now made by the removeable cover will keep a spare tire in place! Anti chip rolled in bed liner was applied to the trunk to look good and seal against corosion. To add fuel you still have to flip up the left tailight just as you would in 1956. The LT1 runs good and has plenty of power. The car pulls good. It has been driven local. The paint, body, chrome and interior are in the original as found condition. The Factory Black color commands a certain respect. It has fantastic patina cannot be replicated. It has the foldout jump seats. When folded out the interior can seat 10 adults. The side rear glass has hairline cracks. The passenger side door glass is broken but rolls up and down fine as all windows. The interior is original and seat covers have seam splits but is useable as is. The dash pad is very nice and is free of cracks. Still has the Autronic Eye. The original signal seeking radio is still in place but needs a tube (or more) to power it up as well as the power antena. The body is above average as can be seen. It has a few rust spots on the inner front fenders and some here and there. There are dents and dings here and there. The chrome shows nice but has surface rust here and there also. The wipers work on the original Cadillac switch but are vacuum and for better performance should be changed to electric. The drive shaft is from a silverado and is a twin unit with a carrier bearing. This unit was purchased used and should have a new carrier and or new universals. For looks and performance I would add a Cold Air intake and route it through the radiator support. The radiator is used and what we had. It works good. For more eye appeal I would have a custom unit made that would fit inside the support instead of behind it. A late model Cadillac engine cover would be an added touch also. The factory exhaust with cats is still in place. The exhaust is exited behind the rear wheels. We opted not to route it through the bumper ends as that will rust them out. The A/C compressor is still in place so you can purchase a clean underdash heat and A/C unit from Vintage Air. The original Cadillac heater core would not work in the conversion. The Caprice/Impala SS unit was also too large for the engine compartment. A smaller unit can be sourced if you are well versed in shopping in a bone yard or again I believe Vintage Air carries them as well. If interested I have a factory rear A/C box that mounts in the trunk. It is complete with the clear tubes and internal external vents. Underhood where the front bumper attaches to the front frame could be a little cleaner. It should be noted that the Gold Cadillac emblem in the grill is actually from a 56 Sixty Special. The Fleetwood Limo had no Cadillac badging. It was considered a Fleetwood. Cool Factoid. There is a (General Motors) GM Technical parking sticker on back of the rearview mirrior. There is another sticker on the corner of the windshield dated 1967. There are some vintage oil change stickers from the 1960's. All the hard part is done and is a clean slate to take it to the next level. There is plenty to do if you want a show car. The condition is what you should expect for an unrestored car there are still the little things to do to make it your own. If you have a business there would no better way to advertise then have this parked out front A little more info on the Fleetwood. The Cadillac Assembly plant in Detroit built the Fleetwood Series 75 Limo. The Fleetwood was hand assembled for utmost fit and finish off the main assembly line in a small corner of the plant. This was not built on the main assembly line. This was a premimum vehicle and the flagship of General Motors. Less then 900 Limo chassis were built. The series 75 Limo featured the small rear window and only available on this series only. Why very few Limos survive In the 1950's it was a fantastic time in automotive history. Body styles changed quickly. Some vehicles had a single year body style. New was better. Once a new body change the previous model was outdated. The 1956 Fleetwood is a professional vehicle. Its purpose was to add prestiege. By 1961 this 1956 was very outdated. By the late 60's many were already in salvage yards just because they were out of style. They are very hard to find today in good condition. Once out of the public eye many have decayed rendering them to just a parts source.. Rare is good. If you are outside the US and would like to bid I welcome you. Please email before you bid. Will it make a 500 mile trip? With any project car it could be anyones guess even for the best mechanic. For your safety as well as the vehicle it should be towed/hauled/trailered/shipped. Once home you can drive it local make any changes untill you feel comfortable. After you purchase it is up to you. Why selling? Have too many vehicles and projects. I have a regular job and no time to enjoy everything. Stay tuned as I will be selling off more collector cars and hot rods. If you have questions please use the ebay ask a question tab. Many times I am asked to call when the simple things can be addressed through email. Since the vehicle is not parked in my living room or close I'll have to make a trip to my wearhouse. So please email your concerns first. If you are not satisfied and/or need more info and wish to speak to me directly I will forward my number. Be advised. I work 40-60 hours a week. I will respond at my earliest. I am old school and only use my smart phone to talk on. So I am responding when I am home. Thanks for understanding. Auction Terms 1.
