Vehicle Detail

Face it! You have clicked on this auction not in search of a 33-year old, somewhat-sporty, economy car but, instead you are drawn towards the mere vision of the Giugiaro-designed MK1 Scirocco. And, holy crap, it is the “S” model available only for ’80 and ’81! I admit, I suffer from the same affliction. I was a fan in 1983 and bought a slightly used alpine white ’81 “S” as my college car, and thus was the beginning of my love affair with VW. THIS CAR has had one owner, Ada, who lived in Santa Barbara where life was good for the “S” in the hands of her children who drove it locally to school. The “S” was never in an accident and has no bondo or body repairs. The salty, foggy climate took its toll while parked outside most of its life and the body was treated to occasional spot paint work. Currently, she wears 50% original paint, 50% random resprays and 100% High-Voltage patina. There is surface rust (which I have neutralized and waxed) uniformly everywhere top-side with 2 spots of not-so-surface rust, about 1/2” holes. But, the underside, rockers, wheel wells, door bottoms and spare tire well are completely rust free and displays perfect original paint. The body is straight and all shut lines are great. From a cosmetic perspective, the sale price of this car will undoubtedly give you plenty of room for a windows-out bare-metal respray, or you can embrace the funkiness and roll hard down the boulevard displaying three decades of well-deserved, well-worn beauty marks. This chassis does not have terminal cancer, or “tin worms”, just a curable skin condition. Please do not let me mislead you, the paint looks like fried hell, and I will send you more detailed photos upon request. REFRESHED MECHANICALS: New radiator, water pump, thermostat, timing belt, (2) c.v. joints, ignition wires, cap, rotor & plugs, and valve cover gasket. I have installed brand new ATE front calipers, rotors, pads and new ATE rear slave cylinders, pads, drums turned, bearings packed, E-brake adjusted. She has a new battery, alternator, starter and muffler. The headlights, tail lights, turn signals, dash indicator lights, dome light, gauges and clock all work perfectly. The gas gauge does not work. She starts cold on high-idle and drops down to warm idle perfectly every time. Shifting, steering, acceleration, braking is all excellent, smooth and unlike any other Scirocco I have owned. She rides on brand new tires on period BMW 320i 13” forged aluminum wheels. I replaced both main motor mounts, so it idles and runs smooth and does not feel like you are hugging an oscillating spindle sander. I have no records of an engine rebuild, however, she runs strong, sounds wonderful, has no blue smoke on start up or deceleration and has no hesitations or issues. OTHER NOTABLE ITEMS: This Scirocco S has a new-old-stock Sigla windshield and front turn signal lenses. Both California blue license plates are in excellent condition with the original dealer license ring – Riveria Volkswagen. Original owners manual and ignition key are present, but the key does work the door handles. All of the “S” trim items are present: Exterior stripes on sides and hood, rear hatch badge, red grill VW badge, bolstered sport seats, black dash insert, black door cards, dual outside mirrors, black window trim, red/black belt-line trim, red bumper decals. Note that this car was not factory equipped with A/C and a rear wiper. THE RAGTOP SUNROOF: Manufactured by Britax and professionally installed back in the day, this 2-fold sliding roof with aluminum guide rails and plexiglass fold-up wind deflector functions perfectly. The headliner and vinyl top are original and are water tight. This sunroof absolutely transforms the driving experience and provides open-air motoring while being able to control air noise, temperature and wind buffeting. THE END OF ADA’S OWNERSHIP: This past December, Ada transferred the title of her beloved and disheveled Scirocco S to her gardener in exchange for some landscaping work and he smogged it, registered it and flipped it to me. My deep love for these “S” models drove me to buy it, preserve it and repair all of the differed maintenance and now I am releasing it to the MK1 community to the next enthusiast for many miles of smiles.
